Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) taxa, glomalin protein, and hyphal density are potential indicators of soil functionality of temperate grasslands in marginal environments subject to grazing over the years. This study evaluated how the AMF community composition, glomalin protein, and hyphal density vary in response to grazing intensity (low or high) and seasonality (spring and autumn) in sodic soils of Argentinian temperate grasslands. The AMF community was dominated by Glomeraceae species. Funneliformis geosporus and Glomus brohultii were the most abundant in both seasons and all grasslands. No AMF species were associated with a particular grazing intensity. However, Entrophospora etunicata, Glomus fuegianum, Septoglomus constrictum, and Acaulospora sp. occurred only in spring, and no species were exclusive to autumn. Hyphal density was highest in grasslands with low grazing intensity and can be considered an indicator of soil functionality. Glomalin protein was the highest in spring in all grasslands. The lower grazing intensity in grasslands with poor livestock control showed no changes in AMF diversity. The AMF community showed high adaptation to soil conditions, indicating high resilience. We concluded that longer periods of controlled grazing management are needed to improve soil conditions and, consequently, change the AMF species composition. Full article

Geographical Indication labels are an increasingly popular alternative among producers and governments seeking to protect the products and producers of their countries. This trend has grown due to the opening of markets and consumers’ increasing desire to know the origin of the products they purchase. A bibliographic review was conducted, including studies on the feasibility of applying quality labels, the associated challenges, and examples. This review identifies the processes involved in obtaining Designation of Origin and presents a positive perspective on their application. It was concluded that obtaining a differentiated quality label can improve production and quality of life, provided that it is the result of an evaluation of the area’s context and the main actors in production chains. Encapsulation of Lactobacillus reuteri in Chia–Alginate Hydrogels for Whey-Based Functional Powders

This study aimed to develop a functional powder using whey and milk matrices, leveraging the protective capacity of chia–alginate hydrogels and the advantages of electrohydrodynamic spraying (EHDA), a non-thermal technique suitable for encapsulating probiotic cells under stress conditions commonly encountered in food processing. A hydrogel matrix composed of chia seed mucilage and sodium alginate was used to form a biopolymeric network that protected probiotic cells during processing. The encapsulation efficiency reached 99.0 ± 0.01%, and bacterial viability remained above 9.9 log10 CFU/mL after lyophilization, demonstrating the excellent protective capacity of the hydrogel matrix. Microstructural analysis using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) revealed well-retained cell morphology and homogeneous distribution within the hydrogel matrix while, in contrast, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed spherical, porous microcapsules with distinct surface characteristics influenced by the encapsulation method. Encapsulates were incorporated into beverages flavored with red fruits and pear and subsequently freeze-dried. The resulting powders were analyzed for moisture, protein, lipids, carbohydrates, fiber, and color determinations. The results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and response surface methodology, highlighting the impact of ingredient ratios on nutritional composition. Raman spectroscopy identified molecular features associated with casein, lactose, pectins, anthocyanins, and other functional compounds, confirming the contribution of both matrix and encapsulants maintaining the structural characteristics of the product. The presence of antioxidant bands supported the functional potential of the powder formulations. Chia–alginate hydrogels effectively encapsulated L. reuteri, maintaining cell viability and enabling their incorporation into freeze-dried beverage powders. This approach offers a promising strategy for the development of next-generation functional food gels with enhanced probiotic stability, nutritional properties, and potential application in health-promoting dairy systems. Endotoxemia is commonly observed in donkeys, secondary to colic, pleuropneumonia, or diarrhea among other disorders. Hematologic ratios are new biomarkers widely used in the diagnosis and prognosis of multiple conditions in human medicine, including sepsis. While the utility of these ratios has been proved in septic foals, no data are available on donkeys. Moreover, reference intervals (RIs) have not been studied in this species. In this study, RIs of the most commonly reported hematologic ratios were determined in 73 healthy adult donkeys. In addition, variations in these ratios in response to LPS infusion were also evaluated in six healthy adult donkeys. Most of the ratios evaluated showed significant variations after induced endotoxemia, with most of them showing values outside of the established RIs. Similarly to septic foals, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio was significantly reduced after LPS infusion. No significant changes were observed in the red cell distribution width to platelet ratio, contrary to reports on septic foals. Previously reported cut-off values for both of these ratios should not be extrapolated to donkeys. Future studies evaluating these ratios in natural endotoxemia or other diseases in donkeys, as well as establishing species-specific cut-off values, are necessary. Full article

Prostate cancer accounts for approximately 1.5 million new diagnoses and 400,000 deaths every year worldwide, and demographic projections indicate a near-doubling of both figures by 2040. Despite existing treatments, 10–20% of patients eventually progress to metastatic castration-resistant disease (mCRPC). The median overall survival (OS) after progression to mCPRC drops to 24 months, and efficacy drops severely after each additional line of treatment. Omics platforms have reached advanced levels and enable the acquisition of high-resolution large datasets that can provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying PCa pathology. Genomics, especially DDR (DNA damage response) gene alterations, detected via tissue and/or circulating tumor DNA, efficiently guides therapy in advanced prostate cancer. Given recent developments, we have performed a comprehensive literature search to cover recent research and clinical trial reports (over the last five years) that integrate omics along three converging trajectories in therapeutic development: (i) predicting response to approved agents with demonstrated survival benefits, (ii) stratifying patients to receive therapies in clinical trials, (iii) guiding drug development as part of drug repurposing frameworks. Collectively, this review is intended to serve as a comprehensive resource of recent advancements in omics-guided therapies for advanced prostate cancer, a clinical setting with existing clinical needs and poor outcomes. The sugarcane industry plays a crucial economic role worldwide, with sucrose and ethanol as its main products. However, its processing generates large volumes of by-products—such as bagasse, molasses, vinasse, and straw—that contain valuable components for biotechnological valorization. This review integrates approximately 100 original research articles published in JCR-indexed journals between 2015 and 2025, of which over 50% focus specifically on sugarcane-derived agroindustrial residues. The biotechnological approaches discussed include submerged fermentation, solid-state fermentation, enzymatic biocatalysis, and anaerobic digestion, highlighting their potential for the production of biofuels, enzymes, and high-value bioproducts. In addition to identifying current advances, this review addresses key technical challenges such as (i) the need for efficient pretreatment to release fermentable sugars from lignocellulosic biomass; (ii) the compositional variability of by-products like vinasse and molasses; (iii) the generation of metabolic inhibitors—such as furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural—during thermochemical processes; and (iv) the high costs related to inputs like hydrolytic enzymes. Special attention is given to detoxification strategies for inhibitory compounds and to the integration of multifunctional processes to improve overall system efficiency. The final section outlines emerging trends (2024–2025) such as the use of CRISPR-engineered microbial consortia, advanced pretreatments, and immobilization systems to enhance the productivity and sustainability of bioprocesses. In conclusion, the valorization of sugarcane by-products through biotechnology not only contributes to waste reduction but also supports circular economy principles and the development of sustainable production models. European pig farmers are challenged by increasingly stringent EU regulations to protect the environment from pollution, to meet animal welfare standards and to make pig farming more sustainable. Economic sustainability is defined as the ability to achieve higher profits by respecting social and natural resources. This study is focused on the analysis of the economic resilience of intensive and extensive farming systems, based on data collected from 56 farms located in Denmark, Poland, Italy and Spain. Productive and economic performances of these farms are analyzed, and economic resilience is assessed through a survey including a selection of indicators, belonging to different themes: [i] resilience of resources, [ii] entrepreneurship, [iii] propensity to extensification. The qualitative data from the questionnaire allow for an exploration of how production systems relate to the three dimensions of resilience. Different levels of resilience were found and discussed for intensive and extensive farms. The findings suggest that intensive farms benefit from high standards and greater bargaining power within the supply chain. Extensive systems can achieve profitability through value-added strategies and generally display good resilience. Policies that support investment and risk reduction are essential for enhancing farm resilience and robustness, while strengthening farmer networks can improve adaptability. Full article

Nowadays, nanosized mesoporous oxides are of increasing interest to scientists. They can be used as components of heterogeneous catalysts, for photo- and electrocatalysis, as gas sensors, etc. For instance, the desired properties in catalysts include a nano size and homogeneity of the particles that form the catalyst. The particle sizes of oxides are set at the initial stage of their formation, as precursors of precipitation in the context of wet chemistry. The creation of optimal conditions is possible through the use of homogeneous precipitation, where the precipitant is formed within the solution itself as a result of a hydrolysis reaction. The resolution of this issue involved the utilization of urea in our experimental setup, obtaining the hydrolysis products of ammonia and carbon dioxide. Consequently, precipitation reactions can be utilized to obtain hydroxides, carbonates, or hydroxy carbonates of metals. The precursors were calcined, obtaining nanosized mesoporous oxides, which can have a wide range of applications. Nanosized 0.1–50 nm metal oxides were obtained, including those aluminum, iron, indium, zinc, nickel, and cobalt. Full article

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of the ultrasound-guided thoracolumbar erector spinae plane (TL-ESP) block in standing horses. A total of 24 injections (n = 12) were performed at the L1 level using either 0.1 mL/kg of saline solution (SS group) or 2% lidocaine (LID group). The block feasibility was assessed based on needle visualization and injection time, while efficacy was evaluated through craniocaudal and dorsoventral (DV) spread using the pinprick technique over 270 min. Desensitization was observed at least once in 100% of horses in the LID group and in 75% in the SS group (p = 0.001). However, in the SS group, desensitization was primarily limited to the Th18 metamer at the 2 cm DV position, with a shorter duration compared to the LID group. The block onset occurred at 22.5 (11.25–60) min in the LID group and at 5 (5–30) min in the SS group (p = 0.069). The number of affected metamers was significantly higher in the LID group (2 [1–3]) compared to the SS group (1 [1–2.25], p = 0.014). At the 2 cm DV point, the end of the block effect occurred at 135 (120–210) min in the LID group and at 60 (3.75–60) min in the SS group (p = 0.001). Needle visualization was excellent in 95.8% of cases, and the mean injection time was 2.5 (2–3) min. These findings confirm that the TL-ESP block is a feasible technique in standing horses. However, its effect is predominantly localized to dorsal dermatomes with a limited ventral spread. Future studies evaluating larger volumes and multiple injection sites are warranted to enhance its clinical applicability. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: Angioleiomyoma (ALM) is a benign tumor that generally presents as a single lesion and, according to the updated WHO classification, includes the following three histological subtypes: solid (or capillary), cavernous, and venous. Typically, ALMs are described as well-defined nodules in the lower extremities but are unusually located in the acral locations and toes. We summarize two cases of ALM and perform a systematic review to provide foot surgeons with the most up-to-date and useful information on the epidemiological aspects, anatomical distribution, and specific histological subtypes of ALM in the foot. Materials and Methods: A systematic review was carried out according to the criteria of a PICO framework, and a systematic search and data processing were carried out according to the PRISMA guidelines. We analyzed patient demographics, clinical characteristics, diagnostic workup, treatment, and clinical outcomes. Each one of the included articles was independently assessed for methodological quality and risk of bias by an independent evaluator. The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed based on their characteristics. Results: This systematic review included 14 case series with 172 reported cases of ALM. One hundred and seventy-two (18.57%) were cases of ALM located on foot, excluding the ankle region. The female-to-male ratio was 1.48. The most common location was the hindfoot (41.5%), followed by the forefoot (20.2%) and the midfoot (8.9%). In 29.4% of cases, the location of the lesions could not be determined. The most frequent location of the lesions was subcutaneous (69%), followed by subaponeurotic (16.5%) and skin (14.5%) locations. The most frequent histological presentation was the solid histologic subtype (65%), followed by the venous subtype (21%) and the cavernous subtype (14%), respectively. Of the total reported cases of ALM located in foot, 63.1% presented as solid painful lesions. Calcified presentations occurred in 7% of cases, with more than half of the cases located in the hindfoot. Surgical excision was the treatment of choice in the two herein reported cases of solid ALM located in the hindfoot, one of them with a calcified presentation. No recurrence was observed in either case after two and five years of follow-up, respectively. All cases reviewed after surgical excision showed a low recurrence rate with a favorable prognosis regardless of the histological subtype and a very rare tendency toward malignancy. Conclusions: ALMs of the foot present as well-defined, painful nodules in the subcutaneous tissue of middle-aged women. Solid histological subtypes are the most prevalent. Histopathological analysis is usually essential for confirmation. Treatment consists primarily of direct excision, with remarkably low recurrence rates. Full article

The Recent Extinction of the Carihuairazo Volcano Glacier in the Ecuadorian Andes Using Multivariate Analysis Techniques

Climate change has accelerated the retreat of Andean glaciers, with significant recent losses in the tropical Andes. This study evaluates the extinction of the Carihuairazo volcano glacier (Ecuador), quantifying its area from 1312.5 m2 in September 2023 to 101.2 m2 in January 2024, its thickness (from 2.5 m to 0.71 m), and its volume (from 2638.85 m3 to 457.18 m3), before its complete deglaciation in February 2024; this rapid melting and its small size classify it as a glacierette. Multivariate analyses (PCA and biclustering) were performed to correlate climatic variables (temperature, solar radiation, precipitation, relative humidity, vapor pressure, and wind) with glacier surface and thickness. The PCA explained 70.26% of the total variance, with Axis 1 (28.01%) associated with extreme thermal conditions (temperatures up to 8.18 °C and radiation up to 16.14 kJ m−2 day−1), which probably drove its disappearance. Likewise, Axis 2 (21.56%) was related to favorable hydric conditions (precipitation between 39 and 94 mm) during the initial phase of glacier monitoring. Biclustering identified three groups of variables: Group 1 (temperature, solar radiation, and vapor pressure) contributed most to deglaciation; Group 2 (precipitation, humidity) apparently benefited initial stability; and Group 3 (wind) played a secondary role. These results, validated through in situ measurements, provide scientific evidence of the disappearance of the Carihuairazo volcano glacier by February 2024. They also corroborate earlier projections that anticipated its extinction by the middle of this decade. The early disappearance of this glacier highlights the vulnerability of small tropical Andean glaciers and underscores the urgent need for water security strategies focused on management, adaptation, and resilience. Background/Objectives: Perceived physical literacy (PPL) appears to be a relevant strategy for combating the prevalent sedentary lifestyle among young people. Therefore, understanding their PPL levels will facilitate the implementation of appropriate strategies for this purpose. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the differences in PPL considering the sex dimension (i.e., males and females) and the age-group (i.e., early compulsory secondary education, late compulsory secondary education and baccalaureate). Methods: Seven-hundred-and-four Spanish students (age = 14.3 ± 1.6 years old) belonging to three different Spanish secondary schools voluntarily participated in this study. To assess adolescents’ perceptions of their physical literacy, the Spanish Adolescents’ Perceived Physical Literacy Assessment (S-PPLI) was used. This instrument consists of nine items equally distributed across three categories: self-perception and self-confidence, self-expression and communication with others, and knowledge and understanding. Results: Males obtained higher scores in all the indicators of PPL, except for items 1, 8 and 9, compared to their female counterparts (p < 0.05), while the oldest age-group reported higher scores in the indicators of knowledge and understanding category compared to students in the early years of compulsory secondary education (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Programs based on increasing the PPL should be implemented specifically for females. Also, similar programs must be included into scholar curriculums from the beginning of secondary education, with the aim of promoting improvements in the health and physical condition of Spanish adolescents. This study uses life cycle analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of co-firing bituminous coal with agricultural biomass waste, such as coconut and rice husks, emphasising circular economy principles. Seven experimental scenarios with different coal-to-biomass ratios were designed, ranging from pure coal to pure biomass. The results show that Scenario B (100% rice husk) achieved the best overall environmental performance, with the lowest global warming potential (300 kg CO2 equivalent), eutrophication potential (4.742 kg PO4 equivalent), and smog formation potential (0.012 kg C2H4 equivalent). Additionally, Scenario F (15% biomass mix) recorded the lowest acidification potential (57.39 kg SO2 eq), indicating that even partial substitution can yield significant environmental benefits. In contrast, Scenario C (100% coal) exhibited the highest acidification (164.08 kg SO2 eq) and eutrophication (8.82 kg PO4 eq) potential. Overall, the results demonstrate that co-firing biomass waste significantly reduces pollutant emissions compared to burning coal alone. This study highlights the effectiveness of biomass waste co-firing in mitigating environmental impacts, promoting resource recovery, and supporting a sustainable energy transition within a circular economy framework. Cancer remains one of the most significant global health challenges due to its high mortality rates and the limited understanding of its progression. Early diagnosis is critical to improving patient outcomes, especially in skin cancer, where timely detection can significantly enhance recovery rates. Histopathological analysis is a widely used diagnostic method, but it is a time-consuming process that heavily depends on the expertise of highly trained specialists. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence have shown promising results in image classification, highlighting its potential as a supportive tool for medical diagnosis. In this study, we explore the application of hybrid Artificial Intelligence models for melanoma diagnosis using histopathological images. The dataset used consisted of 506 histopathological images, from which 313 curated images were selected after quality control and preprocessing. We propose a two-step framework that employs an Autoencoder for dimensionality reduction and feature extraction of the images, followed by a classification algorithm to distinguish between melanoma and nevus, trained on the extracted feature vectors from the bottleneck of the Autoencoder. We evaluated Support Vector Machines, Random Forest, Multilayer Perceptron, and K-Nearest Neighbours as classifiers. Among these, the combinations of Autoencoder with K-Nearest Neighbours achieved the best performance and inference time, reaching an average accuracy of approximately 97.95% on the test set and requiring 3.44 min per diagnosis. The baseline comparison results were consistent, demonstrating strong generalisation and outperforming the other models by 2 to 13 percentage points. Full article

Radopholus similus, commonly known as the burrowing nematode, is one of the major pathogens affecting banana production. Currently, the control of this pathogen relies on chemicals, as no resistant varieties are available. However, new control methods, such the application of ensilage biostimulants (EBs) near the banana rhizosphere, have shown effectiveness. Nevertheless, the impact of this organic control method on soil nematodes and other microbial components remains unknown. This study evaluates the effects of EB application on the native nematofauna of banana. EBs altered the flow of carbon, nutrients, and energy in ways that influenced the abundance of fungivorous and bacterivorous taxa, while consistently reducing the number of plant-parasitic nematodes throughout the experimental period. Specifically, EB application in the soil increased the abundance of certain free-living nematodes, including Aphelenchus, Aphelenchoides, Cephalobidae, and Rhabditidae, while decreasing both the abundance and diversity of phytoparasitic nematodes. In contrast, Criconematidae, Hoplolaimidae, Meloidogyne, Tylenchidae, and R. similis were more abundant in the control and oxamyl-treated soils. EBs can play a crucial role in strategies aimed to improve soil resilience, fertility, and natural suppression, provided that more sustainable production practices are adopted. Full article
