Understanding the Role of Social Negativity in Perceived Life Course Impact and Mental Health Among Women with Endometriosis

Background: Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory, estrogen-dependent gynecological disease in which endometrial-like tissue grows in areas outside the uterus. This condition may significantly influence women’s life course and mental health. Personal, behavioral, social, and environmental factors play a crucial role in predicting these outcomes. The current study aimed to compare the Perceived Life Course Impact (PLCI) and mental health of women with Endometriosis to those without the disease, as well as to explore the factors associated with PLCI and mental health. Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed 543 Israeli women (270 with Endometriosis, 273 without). Participants completed a validated questionnaire assessing perceptions of life course impact in several life domains (intimacy and relationships, employment, education) and mental health. Multiple regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with PLCI and mental health among participants. Results: Women with Endometriosis reported a significantly greater negative perceived impact on intimacy and relationships, employment, and education, with poorer mental health, as compared to the control group. Women with Endometriosis also experienced higher social negativity and lower social support. Multiple regression analyses indicated social negativity as a strong predictor of negative PLCI. Additionally, menstrual pain, social support, and healthcare accessibility were found to be significant predictors of both PLCI and mental health. Conclusions: Comprehensive care for women with Endometriosis requires a multidisciplinary approach, with interventions focused on improving healthcare accessibility, enhancing social support networks, and mitigating social negativity within interpersonal environments. Accurate and efficient detection of celestial objects in telescope imagery is a fundamental challenge in both professional and amateur astronomy. Traditional methods often struggle with noise, varying brightness, and object morphology. This paper introduces COSMICA, a novel, curated dataset of manually annotated astronomical images collected from amateur observations. COSMICA enables the development and evaluation of real-time object detection systems intended for practical deployment in observational pipelines. We investigate three modern YOLO architectures, YOLOv8, YOLOv9, and YOLOv11, and two additional object detection models, EfficientDet-Lite0 and MobileNetV3-FasterRCNN-FPN, to assess their performance in detecting comets, galaxies, nebulae, and globular clusters. All models are evaluated using consistent experimental conditions across multiple metrics, including mAP, precision, recall, and inference speed. YOLOv11 demonstrated the highest overall accuracy and computational efficiency, making it a promising candidate for real-world astronomical applications. These results support the feasibility of integrating deep learning-based detection systems into observational astronomy workflows and highlight the importance of domain-specific datasets for training robust AI models. Adsorption has been found to be highly effective for removing heavy metals from polluted industrial wastewater. Adsorbents of biological origin, such as negatively charged polysaccharides, e.g., alginate and carrageenan, have attracted a lot of attention recently. In this study, these three polysaccharides were used to adsorb different heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The results showed that the sorption yields of various lanthanides with the kappa and iota carrageenan were similar, though the sorption yields of the iota beads were higher. Also, the iota and the kappa beads had higher sorption yields for Ru3+ and Rh3+ than they did for the lanthanides. In general, the presence of light metal ions in the solution affected the sorption yields of the heavy metal ions, depending on the type and concentration of the light metal ions. All three polysaccharides were also capable of adsorbing mixtures of lanthanides and heavy metal ions. In binary solutions that contained both lanthanide ions (Ce3+ or Eu3+) and transition heavy metal ions (Ru3+ or Rh3+), differences in sorption yields were observed, with all polysaccharides exhibiting higher selectivity for Ru3+ and Rh3+. Finally, FTIR, SEM/EDS, and TGA analyses confirmed that all metal ions were adsorbed onto both types of carrageenan. Full article

People who have gone through stoma surgery face different problems and difficulties every day, although most of these issues improve significantly with time. The quality of life of ostomy patients has been proven to be strictly related to self-care ability. So, it is essential for patients to properly maintain the ostomy site, including proper daily self-care and regeneration of the skin around the stoma, to avoid stoma-related complications. This review was undertaken using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. The main aim of the literature review was to analyse and present the characteristics of medical products used in ostomy care currently existing on the market. The intervention and management of stoma problems with appliances and accessories are also summarised. This literature review is limited to a critical analysis of the scientific and professional literature and informational materials developed by manufacturers of stoma accessories. Full article

The present study sets out to examine the status of sympatric populations of south polar (Catharacta maccormicki) (SPSs) and brown skuas (Catharacta antarctica) (BSs) at two sites on King George Island, Antarctica. The study sites were designated as Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and were monitored for three (for Point Hennequin (PH)) and four (for West Admiralty Bay (WAB)) consecutive breeding seasons, concluding with the 2023/24 season. The most recently reported data from these areas are from the 2004/05 season, and the data presented herein allow both areas to be assessed in the context of their IBA and Antarctic Specially Protected Area values. The mean number of total pairs for the investigated seasons for WAB was 67 ± 7, while for PH, it was 157 ± 18. The number of pairs of SPSs at PH and WAB justifies the positive evaluation of the areas as IBAs based on global designation criterion A4 proposed jointly by BirdLife International and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). PH is of particular interest, as it has been determined that at least 2.3% of the global population of SPSs, estimated by BirdLife International to be between 6000 and 15,000 adult individuals, breeds at this site. The expansion of both IBA boundaries is also recommended based on this study. Full article

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a highly informative diagnostic method; however, its quality heavily depends on the patient’s immobility. Even minimal movements, such as breathing, can cause artifacts that complicate image interpretation, not to mention more significant movements, such as twitching or shivering. Given the high cost of the procedure, repeated scanning is undesirable. The aim of this study was to prepare patients for MRI procedures using specialized training software designed to minimize involuntary movements and improve diagnostic quality. The software tracked participants’ movements in an MRI simulator and reproduced characteristic scanning sounds. The Farnebäck optical flow algorithm detected even the slightest movements captured by the camera, allowing for the evaluation of movements during training sessions and improving patient readiness for actual scanning. A pilot study conducted on a group of 10 students aged 21–27 years demonstrated a significant reduction in the average number of movements during testing—from 27.7 in the first test to 8.3 in the second, corresponding to an average decrease of 19.4 movements. Additionally, two participants showed a noticeable reduction in anxiety levels after the first test, which likely contributed to the decrease in movements, emphasizing the importance of psychological preparation in enhancing training effectiveness. The study results suggest potential improvements in the quality of diagnostic images, which can increase their diagnostic value and enhance patient comfort during actual scanning, reducing the likelihood of repeated procedures. Moldavian dragonhead leaves are a valuable waste product from the production of seed oil, from a nutritional point of view. It has been shown that dried leaves can be used for the production of functional foods. Despite the wide possibilities of using dried Moldavian dragonhead leaves, research on the selection of drying methods is scarce. This particular study investigated the traditional convection and the hybrid microwave–convection methods to dry Moldavian dragonhead leaves. We showed that the convection method supported by microwaves allowed us to obtain dried leaves in a much shorter time than traditional convection drying (the convection drying lasted, depending on the parameters, 184-75 min, while the convection–microwave drying lasted 33-7 min). Moreover, the microwave–convection-dried leaves contained more polyphenols (the average TPC in the convection droughts was 29.532, while in the microwave–convection droughts, it was 41.880 mg GAE/g d.m.) and chlorophylls (an average of 2.326 in the convection-dried and 2.675 mg/g d.m. in the microwave–convection-dried material) and were characterized by significantly higher antioxidant activity, compared to convection-dried ones. This paper examines the quantile connectedness between Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), housing market sentiment, and stock market sentiment in the U.S. over the period between January 2014 and June 2022 using the quantile vector autoregression (QVAR) model. We find modest spillover effects at the median quantile (8.51%), which become more pronounced at the extreme tails (between 50.51% and 59.73%). The COVID-19 pandemic amplifies these interconnections. REITs are net receivers at the median but net transmitters at extreme quantiles, while stock market sentiment mainly transmits during normal conditions and receives in highly bullish markets. Home purchase sentiment shifts from fluctuating roles before the pandemic to being a net transmitter post-2021. Overall, negative shocks have a greater impact than positive ones, and REITs exhibit stock-like behavior. These findings underscore the importance for fund managers and investors to consider sentiment volatility in both stock and real estate markets, especially during extreme market conditions. Background/Objectives: Freeze-drying is a dehydration method that extends the shelf life and stability of drugs, vaccines, and biologics. Recently, its role has expanded beyond preservation to improve novel pharmaceuticals and their carriers, such as hydrogels, which are widely studied for both drug delivery and wound healing. The main aim of this study was to explore the multifunctional role of freeze-drying in improving the physicochemical properties of sodium alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol)-based hydrogels for medical applications. Methods: The base matrix and hydrogels containing a nanocarrier-drug system, were prepared by chemical cross-linking and then freeze-dried for 24 h at −53 °C under 0.2 mBa. Key analyses included determination of gel fraction, swelling ratio, FT-IR, SEM, TG/DTG, in vitro drug release and kinetics, and cytotoxicity assessment. Results: Freeze-drying caused an increase in the gel fraction of the hydrogel with the dual drug delivery system from 55 ± 1.6% to 72 ± 0.5%. Swelling ability was pH-dependent and remained in the same range (175–282%). Thermogravimetric analysis showed that freeze-dried hydrogels exhibited higher thermal stability than their non-freeze-dried equivalents. The temperature at 10% weight loss increased from 194.0 °C to 198.9 °C for the freeze-dried drug-loaded matrix, and from 188.4 °C to 203.1 °C for the freeze-dried drug-free matrix. The average pore size of the freeze-dried hydrogels was in the range of 1.07 µm ± 0.54 to 1.74 µm ± 0.92. In vitro drug release revealed that active substances were released in a controlled and prolonged way, according to the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. The cumulative amount of salicylic acid released at pH = 9.0 after 96 h was 63%, while that of fluocinolone acetonide reached 73%. Both hydrogels were non-toxic to human fibroblast cells, maintaining over 90% cell viability after 48 h of incubation. Conclusions: The results show a high potential for commercialisation of the obtained hydrogels as medical dressings. Full article

The lower Messinian Calcare di Rosignano Formation (Tuscany, Italy, 43° N) preserves one of the youngest and northernmost examples of coral reefs in the Mediterranean. The outcropping succession of the Acquabona quarry consists of four main facies, namely, in ascending stratigraphic order: (1) coral boundstone, (2) coralline algal rudstone, (3) serpulid floatstone to packstone, and (4) peloidal packstone to grainstone. The succession displays a trend toward increasingly more shallow conditions and progressively more restricted water circulation. The coral reef displays a limited coral biodiversity and a remarkable abundance of heterotrophs, similar to modern coral reefs developed at the edges of the ecological niche of symbiont-bearing colonial corals. The widespread presence of coral colonies pervasively encrusted by coralline algae and benthic foraminifera suggests that short-term environmental perturbations caused temporary shutdowns of the coral-dominated carbonate factory. Moving upwards, there are fewer corals and more highly adaptable carbonate producers like coralline algae and serpulids. This suggests that the decline of corals had been caused by the conditions in the basin becoming more stressful, up to the collapse of the coral community. The overall succession indicates that coral-dominated ecosystems located at the edges of the coral zone are very sensitive; they can be affected even by minor perturbations and easily collapse if negative conditions persist. Gelatine hydrogels can be prepared using different cross-linking methods, such as enzymatic, physical or chemical. Unfortunately, in the case of chemical cross-linking, the typically utilized synthetic cross-linkers are harmful to human health and the environment. Therefore, in accordance with the principles of green chemistry and sustainable development, we have obtained compounds for the chemical cross-linking of hydrogel polymers from the processing of spent coffee grounds. In this study, gelatin/κ-carrageenan hydrogels are cross-linked using a bio-cross-linking agent from spent coffee grounds. Their physicochemical and thermal properties are compared with those of standard physical gels. The chemical cross-linking was confirmed based on FT-IR spectra, which demonstrated the formation of new covalent bonds between the oxidized polyphenols included in the extract from the spent coffee grounds and the amide groups present in the gelatine structure. Significant differences were also observed in morphology (SEM images) and other physico-chemical characteristics (gel fraction, swelling ability, hardness). The chemically cross-linked hydrogels in comparison to physically ones are characterized by a better developed porous network, a slightly higher gel fraction (64.03 ± 4.52% as compared to 68.15 ± 0.77%), and a lower swelling ratio (3820 ± 45% as compared to 1773 ± 35%), while TGA results show that they have better thermal stability. The research confirmed the possibility of using the developed natural cross-linking agent in the process of obtaining hydrogel materials based on bio-polymers. Full article

The integration of sign language recognition systems into digital platforms has the potential to bridge communication gaps between the deaf community and the broader population. This paper introduces an advanced Israeli Sign Language (ISL) recognition system designed to interpret dynamic motion gestures, addressing a critical need for more sophisticated and fluid communication tools. Unlike conventional systems that focus solely on static signs, our approach incorporates both deep learning and Computer Vision techniques to analyze and translate dynamic gestures captured in real-time video. We provide a comprehensive account of our preprocessing pipeline, detailing every stage from video collection to the extraction of landmarks using MediaPipe, including the mathematical equations used for preprocessing these landmarks and the final recognition process. The dataset utilized for training our model is unique in its comprehensiveness and is publicly accessible, enhancing the reproducibility and expansion of future research. The deployment of our model on a publicly accessible website allows users to engage with ISL interactively, facilitating both learning and practice. We discuss the development process, the challenges overcome, and the anticipated societal impact of our system in promoting greater inclusivity and understanding. Full article

The authors of this study focused on the energy and material assessment of processes for processing pellets from metal-bearing waste, specifically Fe concentrate. A mathematical model was created for process evaluation, with which thermotechnical calculations of parameters in the processing of metallized pellets were carried out. Thermodynamic calculations were performed to determine the enthalpy of the charge in individual devices (drying chamber, rotary kiln, cooler). For the reduction of Fe oxides, carbon from coke (with Fe oxide reductions of 50%, 61%, and 92%) and lignite (with Fe oxide reductions of 69% and 92%) were considered as part of the pellets. The degree of reduction of iron oxides was a determining parameter, and the consumption of the reducing agent corresponded to the direct reduction of Fe oxides by carbon with a coefficient of 1.5. Another determining parameter was the input and output temperature in individual devices. For a more precise description of the processes in individual devices, calculations were carried out zonally. The results of the calculations are analyses and recommendations for feasible alternatives for the reducing agent and associated processes. Full article

We coin the term “network goodness” for a value we define for a network embedded in a given environment as a metric that describes the suitability of that network for meeting a demand. Three formulas are proposed to calculate the metric from three variable values. The first variable considers parts of the environment gravitated by the network. For these parts of the environment, we define a value that measures user costs refusing them the use of the network. Last but not least, the network maintenance costs are considered. The results are obtained after focusing on infrastructure and transport networks, but can be used for other types of networks as well. Full article
