Holocene Faulting on the Zuogong Segment of the Nujiang Fault Zone, Southeastern Tibetan Plateau

The Nujiang Fault Zone is located in the Three Parallel Rivers region on the southeastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, serving as a discordogenic fault that must be traversed by the Sichuan–Tibet transportation corridor project. Because of the scarcity of direct geological evidence, the late Quaternary activity of the Nujiang Fault Zone remains highly controversial. Focusing on the late Quaternary activity and active intensity of this fault, we conducted detailed field investigations along the Zuogong segment of the Nujiang Fault Zone based on high-resolution remote sensing images. Two trenches were excavated within a linear trough near Ranmi Village. Fourteen 14C samples were collected for AMS dating, and two fault gouge samples were obtained for microstructural analysis, aiming to reconstruct the paleoseismic sequence and estimate the corresponding earthquake magnitude. Clear fault planes were exposed in the trenches, which distinctly offset the middle-late Holocene strata. Three paleoseismic events were recorded by trench exposures: Event E1 prior to 5824 ± 61 cal BP (approximately 7031 ± 688 cal BP), Event E2 at 4560 ± 321 cal BP, and Event E3 at 1464 ± 142 cal BP. Analogous to the northern-central segment of the Longmenshan Fault Zone, where the Ms 8.0 2008 Wenchuan earthquake occurred, and its southern segment was associated with the Ms 7.0 2013 Lushan earthquake, microstructural observations of the fault gouge from the Zuogong segment also revealed typical brittle deformation characteristics. In terms of trenching-offset features, as well as the composition and microscopic properties of clay minerals in the fault gouge, the Zuogong segment exhibited geological signatures that were intermediate between the southern and northern-central segments of the Longmenshan Fault Zone, with greater similarity to the southern segment. Accordingly, the maximum potential earthquake magnitude of this segment was estimated to be Ms 7.0–7.5. The paleoseismic sequence of the Zuogong segment indicated an earthquake recurrence interval of approximately 2500–3000 years, with approximately 1500 elapsed years since the most recent seismic event. Although the full recurrence cycle has not yet been approached, implying low probability of great earthquakes with magnitudes of Ms 7.0–7.5 in the near future, the occurrence of non-characteristic seismic events cannot be ruled out. This study reveals direct evidence for Holocene activity along the Zuogong segment of the Nujiang Fault Zone, providing a critical scientific basis for quantitative seismic hazard assessment and major engineering planning and construction in the research area. The hormonal vitamin D metabolite, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D), produced primarily in the kidney, acts in numerous end-organs via the nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) to trigger molecular events that orchestrate bone mineral homeostasis, immune responsiveness, and aspects of behavior. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) encodes a neuronally expressed enzyme that catalyzes the initial, rate-limiting step in the production of several catecholamine neurotransmitters and hormones, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Herein we report that TH mRNA is significantly induced (2.5-fold) and NURR1 mRNA is induced 9.3-fold by 10 nM 1,25D in differentiated human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Similar results were observed in human U87 glioblastoma cells (TH, 2.6-fold; NURR1, 3.6-fold). Comparative analysis of TH gene promoter-proximal sequences from human, mouse, and rat identifies candidate NURR1-responsive elements (NBREs) at the following positions: −35, −855, −1470, and −2343 bp in the human gene; −34 and −961 bp in the mouse gene; and −34, −350, and −873 bp in the rat gene, consistent with NURR1 acting as a recurring regulatory factor at TH promoters across mammalian species. Furthermore, by interrogating VDR ChIP-seq/cistrome datasets, we identified candidate vitamin D-responsive elements (VDREs) at the human NURR1 locus that provide a plausible genomic framework for direct regulation of NURR1 by 1,25D/VDR. We propose that 1,25D-liganded VDR acts as a primary inducer of NURR1, which in turn secondarily activates expression of the TH gene, thereby defining a transcriptional route through which 1,25D/VDR signaling may influence TH-linked dopaminergic gene programs. Retinoid X receptor (RXR) may facilitate both NURR1-dependent and -independent potentiation of TH transcription because the rexinoid, bexarotene, significantly enhances TH mRNA in human U87 cells, either alone (2.0-fold) or in combination with 1,25D (4.1-fold). In addition, bexarotene and its novel analogs, A41 and A55, induce NURR1 mRNA expression in U87 cells by 2.8-, 3.1-, and 4.8-fold, respectively, with A55 outperforming the parent compound at matched concentration. Because Parkinson’s disease is characterized by the selective degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and impaired NURR1-dependent transcriptional programs, our findings identify a 1,25D/VDR–NURR1–RXR transcriptional axis as a previously underappreciated regulatory framework for studying TH gene expression and dopaminergic gene regulation in Parkinson’s disease-relevant neural contexts. We review the recent developments on the decoupling limit zooming in on a BPS string state in heterotic string theory. In this limit, the target-space geometry lacks any ten-dimensional metric description and acquires various non-Lorentzian features. We present the supersymmetric worldsheet sigma model in the decoupling limit. This sigma model describes the heterotic version of non-relativistic string theory, whose second quantization is related to heterotic matrix string theory. We introduce bookkeeping to separate the Yang–Mills gauge and gravitational anomaly analyses. We review the Yang–Mills gauge anomaly analysis in the sigma models before and after the decoupling limit is performed and provide further details on how the quantum calculation commutes with the decoupling limit. We comment on how the analogous calculation can be performed for the gravitational anomaly. This contribution is based on a talk at the University of Science and Technology of China. Full article

The rapid development of smart energy infrastructures and renewable energy systems requires advanced sensing solutions that provide high accuracy, expandability, and stability under real operating conditions. However, conventional gas monitoring systems are predominantly based on resistive or voltage-output sensors, which require complex analog front-end circuits and analog-to-digital conversion, leading to increased system complexity, cost, and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. This paper tackles this limitation by proposing a frequency-domain sensing approach for multichannel monitoring of biogas plant parameters. The objective of this study is to develop and experimentally validate an extendable sensing architecture based on autogenerator microelectronic gas transducers with direct gas concentration–frequency conversion and FPGA-based digital acquisition. The proposed method is grounded in a physical–mathematical model of the space-charge capacitance of gas-sensitive semiconductor structures derived from Poisson’s equation, facilitating analytical formulation of conversion and sensitivity functions. A multichannel FPGA-based measurement system is implemented to process frequency signals without analog conditioning or ADC stages. Experimental validation was performed for CH4 (0–85%), CO2 (0–60%), H2, NH3, and H2S (1–20,000 ppm). The results demonstrate measurement uncertainty within 0.25–0.5%, with sensitivity reaching 350–748 Hz/ppm for H2, 455–750 Hz/ppm for NH3, and 253–375 Hz/ppm for H2S, while methane and carbon dioxide sensitivities reach up to 112 kHz/% and 98.7 kHz/%, respectively. Spectral analysis in the LTE-1800 band confirms improved noise immunity (up to 4.5×) and extended transmission capabilities. A 12-channel FPGA-based monitoring system (RDM-BP-1) with a 1 s sampling interval, IP67 protection, and wireless connectivity is developed and validated. The proposed architecture eliminates analog signal conditioning, reduces hardware complexity, and provides an easily expandable and reliable sensing solution for smart buildings, renewable energy systems, and cloud-integrated energy infrastructures. Although the diterpenoid alkaloids of Aconitum carmichaelii Debx. have long been a research focus in phytochemistry and pharmacology, systematic studies on the growth and development of its daughter roots remain limited, yet this process critically determines the yield and quality of the medicinal material. This study utilized the Jiangyou-derived daughter root of A. carmichaelii as experimental material. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and total lignin quantification demonstrated that both the expression level of AcPRX12 and total lignin relative content were consistently higher in the non-swollen (PB) parts than in the swollen (P) parts of the daughter roots. The complete cDNA sequence of the AcPRX12 (with a full length of 1357 bp and encoding 350 amino acids) was obtained by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). Bioinformatics analysis identified AcPRX12 as an extracellular class III peroxidase containing a secretory peroxidase domain, and further predicted its strong binding affinity for syringaldazine, an S-type lignin monomer analog. In addition, the heterologous expression of AcPRX12 in Arabidopsis thaliana resulted in a significant increase in lignin content, which inhibited plant growth, as evidenced by shorter roots, thinner stems, smaller leaves, and shorter siliques. Collectively, these results support a model in which AcPRX12 promotes lignin biosynthesis to modulate daughter root development, ultimately shaping its distinctive tapered morphology. In conclusion, our findings propose a lignin-mediated regulatory mechanism for daughter root development controlled by AcPRX12, offering a key gene resource and a theoretical basis for understanding its morphogenesis. This work presents a complete multi-serial adaptive bus interface system compatible with the most widely used industrial serial communications standards: RS-232, RS-485, RS-422, and CAN. The proposed system automatically detects the connected serial interface type through analog line sensors and dynamically redirects the bus to the appropriate transceiver using a logical multiplexer. This approach aims to simplify the configuration of heterogeneous serial devices in complex and modular integration scenarios, such as body builders in industrial or vehicular systems. The hardware is designed as a scalable PCIe card-based device, allowing multiple adaptive bus interfaces to be integrated within a rack-based modular architecture. In addition, a single 5-pin plug-and-play connector is proposed by unifying the different bus signals of the transceivers, thereby simplifying cabling and deployment. Complementary implemented capabilities include baud rate auto-detection and supervision, as well as automatic direction-control functionality for RS-485 communication. Experimental validation demonstrated that the proposed system successfully detected and redirected all supported interfaces, achieving reliable connection and disconnection within an average time of 2.5 s. Furthermore, the integrated baud rate auto-detection algorithm accurately identified transmission speeds up to 1 Mbps in under 80 ms, while the automatic direction-control capability operated reliably at speeds up to 576,000 bps. Background/Objectives: Long-term bisphosphonate (BP) therapy is an effective treatment for osteoporosis but has been associated with rare complications such as atypical femoral fractures (AFFs). Emerging reports suggest that similar insufficiency fractures may also occur in other skeletal sites, including the lumbar pedicles. This study reports two rare cases of isolated bilateral lumbar pedicle stress fractures in patients on prolonged BP therapy. Along with a structured literature review, the objective was to evaluate whether diagnostic criteria derived from those used for AFFs may apply to these atypical vertebral fractures. Methods: Two patients with osteoporosis and on long-term BP therapy diagnosed with isolated lumbar pedicle stress fractures were retrospectively analyzed. A structured literature review identified similar reported cases. All cases were evaluated using the 2010 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research AFF criteria to assess applicability to isolated pedicle stress fractures. Results: Both patients demonstrated bilateral lumbar pedicle fractures without vertebral body involvement. One was treated conservatively; the other underwent robotic-assisted percutaneous pedicle screw fixation with documented fracture healing at six months. The literature review identified eight similar cases of isolated pedicle fractures in patients on prolonged BP therapy. Clinical course and imaging findings demonstrated stress-type features analogous to AFFs. The proposed AFF-based diagnostic criteria for pedicular insufficiency fractures were found to be applicable to all ten patients. Conclusions: Isolated bilateral pedicle stress fractures may represent a spinal analog of AFFs. Based on shared clinical and imaging features, we propose preliminary diagnostic criteria for atypical pedicular insufficiency fractures. Increased awareness and standardized criteria may aid in early diagnosis and reporting, encouraging further studies on this rare spinal entity. Full article

Background: Rhodiola rosea (RR) is marketed as an adaptogen; however, evidence for acute/short-term effects—and especially dose–response effects—in trained adults across performance and cognition is limited. Objective: Test whether RR improves resistance performance (strength, power) and executive function in resistance-trained adults using a randomized crossover with placebo and a capsule-free baseline. Methods: In a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial with four conditions—no-capsule control (CON), placebo (PL), low-dose RR (LDRR), and high-dose RR (HDRR). Twenty-seven resistance-trained adults completed the conditions. Day-7 testing included bench press (BP) and leg press (LP) 1-repetition maximum (1RM); a third set to failure at 60% 1RM with set-3 volume; Tendo mean/peak power; a 30 s Wingate; and the Stroop Color–Word Test. Secondary endpoints were Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE), Readiness to perform using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and hemodynamics. Results: Versus CON, LDRR increased BP 1RM (+5.59 kg; p = 0.003), set-3 repetitions (+4.30; p < 0.001), set-3 volume (+168.6 kg; p < 0.001), and mean power (+29.7 W; p = 0.026). HDRR increased set-3 repetitions (+2.78; p = 0.005) and peak power (+34.2 W; p = 0.026), with a trend for set-3 volume (p = 0.086). LP 1RM exceeded CON with LDRR (+35.7 kg; p < 0.001) and HDRR (+47.7 kg; p < 0.001); contrasts vs. PL were significant. Wingate outcomes showed no consistent effects. Stroop improved vs. CON across all sections: Word +10.5 to +17.4 counts (p < 0.05), Color +6.1 to +12.0 (p ≤ 0.03), and Color–Word +10.2 to +18.9 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Short-term RR consumption, regardless of dose or gender, improved resistance performance and significantly enhanced Stroop outcomes, with minimal changes in anaerobic cycling and RPE, and no consistent acute hemodynamic effects. Background and Objectives: Effective pain management is essential for optimizing recovery after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane (ESP) and transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks are validated techniques, but may be limited by equipment requirements and technical complexity. This study aimed to evaluate whether surgeon-delivered local anesthetic infiltration provides comparable analgesic efficacy. Materials and Methods: This prospective, randomized, controlled, single-center trial enrolled 172 patients undergoing elective LC between November 2020 and June 2022. Patients were randomized into four groups: Group A—surgeon-delivered port-site and intraperitoneal bupivacaine infiltration; Group B—ESP block; Group C—TAP block; and Group D—control. Primary outcomes were postoperative pain assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h, and Behavioral Pain Scale (BPS) scores at 1 and 3 h. Secondary outcomes included 24 h tramadol consumption, patient satisfaction, additional rescue analgesia requirement, and procedure duration. Results: All intervention groups (A–C) demonstrated significantly lower VAS and BPS scores compared to controls (VAS at 24 h: 1.8 ± 0.9 vs. 2.8 ± 1.3, p < 0.001). Tramadol use was also reduced (≈82 mg vs. 97 mg, p < 0.001), with fewer opioid-related adverse effects. No significant differences were observed among Groups A–C. Patient satisfaction was higher in the intervention groups, and no major complications were reported. Conclusions: Surgeon-delivered local infiltration achieved analgesic efficacy equivalent to ESP and TAP blocks. Considering its simplicity, safety, and minimal resource demands, this method may represent a practical alternative for enhanced recovery pathways following LC. Full article

Accumulating evidence indicates that bisphenol A (BPA) analogs, including bisphenol B (BPB) and bisphenol S (BPS), disrupt testicular function and contribute to male reproductive dysfunction (MRD). However, whether BPA analogs are involved in MRD among middle-aged men remains inconclusive. Therefore, we selected cryptorchidism, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and testicular tumors as representative MRD conditions in middle-aged individuals, aiming to explore the molecular mechanisms that may be disrupted by bisphenols (BPs). By using GeneCards, STRING and Cytoscape, TP53, AKT1, and MYC were pinpointed as core targets associated with MRD. Enrichment analysis suggested that BPs may induce MRD by disrupting steroidogenesis. UPLC-MS/MS analysis showed that both BPB and BPS exhibit specific accumulation in the testes. Following 20-day exposure to 0.3 or 0.6 mg/kg body weight/day BPB or BPS, testosterone levels and the expression of hub genes were decreased. The molecular docking results demonstrated that both BPB and BPS can directly bind to members of the cytochrome P450 family, potentially interfering with sex hormone biosynthesis. Our study identified the targets and mechanisms through which BPB and BPS induce MRD in middle-aged males, thereby providing insights for the safety assessment of BPs. Full article

While backpropagation (BP) has long served as the cornerstone of training deep neural networks, it relies heavily on strict differentiation logic and global gradient information, lacking biological plausibility. In this paper, we systematically present a novel neural network training paradigm that depends solely on signal propagation, which we term Backward Signal Propagation (BSP). The core idea of this framework is to reinterpret network training as a symmetry-driven process of discovering inverse causal relationships. Starting from symmetry principles, we define symmetric differential equations and leverage their inherent properties to implement a learning mechanism analogous to differentiation. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of causal distance, a core invariant that bridges the forward propagation and inverse learning processes. It quantifies the influence strength between any two elements in the network, leading to a generalized form of the chain rule. With these innovations, we achieve precise, pointwise adjustment of model parameters. Unlike traditional BP, the BSP method enables parameter updates based solely on local signal features. This work offers a new direction toward efficient and biologically plausible learning algorithms. Full article

Gryllacridid classification is the subject of ongoing discussion. Here, we present the first mitogenomic sequences for three Ocellarnaca taxa: O. braueri (15,597 bp), O. fuscotessellata (15,607 bp), and O. emeiensis (16,510 bp). Three mitochondrial genomes exhibited the conventional metazoan gene and conserved the characteristic gene order across Gryllacrididae species. Evolutionary selection analyses showed that atp8 was the least evolutionarily constrained mitochondrial gene, whereas cox1 was the most conserved across lineages. The three Ocellarnaca species harbored 5–8 mitochondrial DNA sequence repeats (mtSSRs), falling within the 1–8 range detected in all analyzed Gryllacrididae species. Magnigryllacris and Ocellarnaca exhibited higher mtSSR counts than related genera sharing analogous male abdominal apex morphology. Phylogenomic analyses of 35 mitogenomes from 21 Gryllacrididae species supported Ocellarnaca as monophyletic and a sister to Magnigryllacris (bootstrap = 100%), with O. fuscotessellata resolved as sister to the clade (O. sp. + (O. emeiensis + O. braueri)). This study expands the mitogenomic resources for Ocellarnaca, which will facilitate further resolution of phylogenetic reconstruction within this genus and across Gryllacrididae genera. Full article

Plastic pollution is one of the leading global problems of modern society. The growing demand for and production of plastic polymers has caused bisphenol A (BPA) and its emergent substitute molecules bisphenol S and F (BPS and BPF) to be present in water, food, and soil worldwide, exposing humans to endocrine disruptors. Exposure to these compounds has been associated with pathologies such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and psychiatric disorders. Interestingly, hypovitaminosis D (or low 25(OH)D) is also associated with this class of diseases. Therefore, the present work, for the first time, explores the relationship patterns between urinary bisphenols (BPs) and low 25(OH)D in a large general cohort (NHANES 13–16). Descriptive statistical analyses, comparative analyses, linear regressions, and binomial and multinomial logistic regressions were performed. Descriptive and comparative analysis, and simple linear regressions, showed different trends between BPs, and binomial logistic regressions showed that only BPS is a risk factor of low 25(OH)D, independently of age, BMI, gender, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, and vitamin supplements consumption; odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.10 (1.04–1.17). The different trend patterns observed in urinary bisphenols show that, despite being structurally similar molecules and potential analogs, they may affect the body in different ways. From an integrated perspective, this could represent an even greater potential threat than that posed by BPA alone. Future integrated studies will be required to further explore and clarify this emerging paradigm. Full article

Background/Objectives: Bisphenols (BPs) and especially bisphenol S (BPS), an analog of bisphenol A (BPA), are widely used and induce oxidative stress, resulting in the inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis which all are crucial for reproduction, the progression of pregnancy, and fertility. The present study integrates trophoblastic cells as an in vitro model to provide evidence and investigate the molecular interactions regarding placenta-related pregnancy complications after cytotoxic exposure to BPS. Methods: Human endometrial epithelial adenocarcinoma Ishikawa cell lines and trophoblastic cells were cultured. Cells obtained from the cultures were divided into plates and incubated for 24 h with different concentrations of bisphenol S (BPS). Cell viability was measured using the Countess Automated Cell Counter and the viability of Ishikawa cells was assessed after 48 h and for trophoblasts after 24 h. The effect of siRNA on NANOG expression was evaluated using qRT-PCR. Quantification of DNMT and NANOG was performed by qPCR and the G6PD gene was used as an internal control. Results: Real-time PCR results showed that the expression of the DNMT1 gene varies depending on the concentration of BPS in trophoblastic cells. In Ishikawa cell lines, real-time PCR results showed that DNMT1 gene expression was higher due to cell increase, but the measured fold change did not differ significantly. Data analysis indicated a statistically significant difference between CpDNMT1 in trophoblasts with and without BPS, where higher values were observed in the case of BPS presence (p = 0.019). The largest difference was observed between CpDNMT1 trophoblasts without BPS and CpDNMT1 Ishikawa with BPS (p < 0.001). Silencing the NANOG gene resulted in a reduced expression of DNMT1, while the G6PD gene was still detected. Conclusions: The results of this study highlight the cytotoxic effects of BPS and consequently its effect on trophoblast viability. The results of NANOG-DNMT1 gene expression related to BPS exposure reinforces our understanding of EDC-induced placental dysfunction. Full article

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a primary defense against pathogens. Here, we examined the interaction of two BP100 analogs, R2R5-BP100 (where Arg substitutes Lys 2 and 5) and R2R5-BP100-A-NH-C16 (where an Ala and a C16 hydrocarbon chain are added to the R2R5-BP100 C-terminus), with membrane models. Large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) and giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) were prepared with the major lipids in Gram-positive (GP) and Gram-negative (GN) bacteria, as well as red blood cells (RBCs). Fluorescence data, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential measurements revealed that upon achieving electroneutrality through peptide binding, vesicle aggregation occurred. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra corroborated these observations, and upon vesicle binding, the peptides acquired α-helical conformation. The peptide concentration, producing a 50% release of carboxyfluorescein (C50) from LUVs, was similar for GP-LUVs. With GN and RBC-LUVs, C50 decreased in the following order: BP100 > R2R5-BP100 > R2R5BP100-A-NH-C16. Optical microscopy of GP-, GN-, and RBC-GUVs revealed the rupture or bursting of the two former membranes, consistent with a carpet mechanism of action. Using GUVs, we confirmed RBC aggregation by BP100 and R2R5-BP100. We determined the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of peptides for a GN bacterium (Escherichia coli (E. coli)) and two GP bacteria (two strains of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and one strain of Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis)). The MICs for S. aureus were strain-dependent. These results demonstrate that Lys/Arg replacement can improve the parent peptide’s antimicrobial activity while increasing hydrophobicity renders the peptide less effective and more hemolytic.
