Background: Poor appetite, a major contributor to malnutrition, is highly prevalent among older adults and associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, there are currently no widely accepted or consistently effective pharmacological treatments targeting appetite that are routinely recommended alongside nutritional interventions. Medical cannabis has been proposed as a potential appetite stimulant in older adults with poor appetite through modulation of appetite-regulating hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and total ghrelin, but the evidence remains limited. Aims: To investigate the effects of Sativex® versus placebo on postprandial GLP-1 and total ghrelin concentrations following a single dose (8.1 mg Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and 7.5 mg cannabidiol (CBD)), and on subjective appetite following two separated doses, in older adults with poor appetite, and to investigate the associations between plasma concentrations of THC and its metabolites on these outcomes. Methods: This protocolized secondary analysis included 17 participants (≥65 years) with poor appetite from a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial. Participants received Sativex® or placebo on two separate study days. GLP-1 and total ghrelin were measured following one dose of Sativex®/placebo and a standardized breakfast, and subjective appetite was assessed repeatedly using visual analog scales throughout the administration of two separate doses of Sativex®/placebo, the consumption of a standardized breakfast, and an ad libitum lunch meal. Effects/associations were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Results: Compared with placebo, Sativex® produced an estimated 2.38 pmol/L (95% confidence intervals (CI): −0.71 to 5.46; Bonferroni-corrected p = 0.274) reduction in mean GLP-1 and time-dependent changes in mean total ghrelin (Bonferroni-corrected p = 0.054). Compared with placebo, Sativex® produced minimal changes in separate subjective appetite sensations (all Bonferroni-corrected p = 1.00) and a slightly lower combined appetite score (−5.2 mm; 95% CI: −24.4 to 4.0; Bonferroni-corrected p = 1.00). Increased plasma concentrations of THC and metabolites were associated with reduced estimates of mean GLP-1 concentrations and subjective appetite, as well as increased mean total ghrelin concentrations. However, no statistically significant differences were detected for any analyses, and estimates had wide CIs, warranting cautious interpretation. Conclusions: In conclusion, no statistically significant differences were detected between Sativex® and placebo in postprandial GLP-1, total ghrelin, or subjective appetite over time in older adults with poor appetite. Similarly, no statistically significant associations were observed between plasma concentrations of THC and its metabolites and GLP-1, total ghrelin, or subjective appetite. Winter feeding represents a significant cost in beef production, requiring efficient strategies that maintain productivity while minimizing environmental impact. Forty-six pregnant cows (620 ± 61 kg BW) were used to evaluate an ad libitum hay-based diet (2.02 Mcal/kg ME; HFOR; n = 23) versus a corn-based diet (2.84 Mcal/kg ME) limit-fed at 1.2% BW (HCON; n = 23) from 50 d pre-calving to 84 d post-calving. Pre- and post-calving, HCON cows consumed less (p < 0.01) dry matter, crude protein, and water than HFOR cows. While CH4 yield per kg DMI was greater (p < 0.01) for HCON cows, total daily CH4 emissions and CH4 per unit of NEm intake were lower (p ≤ 0.03) compared with HFOR cows. Behavioral data showed that HCON cows had fewer (p < 0.01) meals and spent less time eating, but had greater intake per minute. Cow BW differed by treatment over time (p < 0.01), with HCON cows weighing less through early lactation, though no differences were observed from d 84 to weaning. Calf BW remained unaffected (p ≥ 0.76). In conclusion, limit-feeding a corn-based diet improves feed and water use efficiency and reduces enteric CH4 emissions without compromising calf growth, offering a viable alternative to traditional forage-based wintering systems. This study evaluated the effects of replacing soybean meal with cashew nut roasting residue (CNRR) on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, and economic efficiency in lactating crossbred Saanen goats. Fifteen does were assigned to a completely randomized design with three treatments: 0% CNRR (T1), 10% replacement of soybean meal protein (T2), and 20% replacement (T3). Goats were fed pangola hay ad libitum and concentrate according to milk yield (1:2). Total dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and fiber intake were not affected by dietary treatments (p > 0.05). However, crude protein digestibility decreased from 68.83% in the control group to 52.72% and 51.21% in the CNRR treatments (p < 0.05). Rumen pH and total volatile fatty acids remained within normal physiological ranges, suggesting stable rumen fermentation. Blood parameters, including packed cell volume, glucose, and blood urea nitrogen, were not influenced by CNRR supplementation (p > 0.05). Economic analysis showed reduced feed cost with increasing CNRR inclusion. In conclusion, CNRR can replace soybean meal protein at rates of up to 20% without affecting feed intake, ruminal pH, or measured blood metabolites; however, crude protein digestibility was reduced, indicating that dietary formulation may require adjustment. Background/Objectives: Sweeteners and sweetness enhancers (S&SEs) have been proposed to potentially impair appetite regulation by stimulating sweet taste receptors beyond the perception of sweetness, similar to caloric sweeteners. The evidence is, however, not clear. Methods: This sub-study investigated the acute effects of a mixture of acesulfame potassium and cyclamate (Ace-K/Cyc) versus water on postprandial appetite sensations and energy intake at baseline, after a two-month weight loss period, and after a four-month weight loss maintenance period, including (S&SE group) or excluding S&SEs (Sugar group) in the diet. A total of 26 participants (18–65 years; BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2) were recruited from the one-year randomized controlled SWEET trial. Subjective appetite sensations were measured using visual analogue scales while fasting and nine times during a 250-min postprandial period. During this period, a standardized breakfast (0–10 min) was served and, 2 h later, a test drink containing either Ace-K/Cyc or water (120–130 min) was given. After 265 min, an ad libitum test meal was served. Results: Of 26 participants enrolled, 22 completed test day 2 and 16 completed test day 3. The S&SEs group rated lower prospective consumption and desire to eat something sweet after the test drink with Ace-K/Cyc compared to the sugar group consuming water (p < 0.05), with effects persisting after adjusting for taste. Initial differences in hunger were explained by taste palatability. This was true for all three test days. Ad libitum energy intake did not differ (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Ace-K/Cyc compared to water reduced feelings of prospective consumption and desire to eat something sweet acutely, after two months of weight loss, and after four months of weight loss maintenance. Due to the low sample size and power, larger studies are warranted to confirm these results. Full article

The effects of pelleting a total mixed ration (TMR) for dairy sheep were investigated in an experiment involving 24 lactating Assaf ewes, which were assigned to two groups and fed the same TMR ad libitum, offered either in pelleted (PTMR group, n = 12) or in unpelleted form (CTMR group, n = 12). The experiment lasted 28 days, during which feed intake, eating behavior (including meal frequency and size, meal duration, eating rate, between-meal interval), and milk yield were recorded daily. Body weight (BW) was recorded on days 1 and 28 and milk samples were collected on days 1, 8, 15, 22 and 28 for milk composition analysis. Blood acid-base status was determined at the beginning and at the end of the trial. Ewes fed the CTMR diet exhibited (p < 0.05) a higher meal frequency and longer meal duration, along with a smaller meal size and slower eating rate. However, feed intake in this group was less than that in ewes fed PTMR only during the final two weeks of the experimental period. Total eating time was also longer (p < 0.001) in the CTMR group, whereas the average time between meals was shorter (p < 0.002). No differences (p > 0.05) were observed between dietary treatments in blood acid-base status, milk yield or milk composition. However, a diet x day interaction (p < 0.05) was detected for milk yield, as during the last 2 weeks of the experimental period the ewes fed the PTMR yielded more milk than those fed the CTMR. Feed conversion ratio did not differ between groups (p > 0.05), but body weight loss was greater in ewes fed the CTMR diet (−3.00 vs. −0.58 kg; p < 0.05). A trend toward improved feed efficiency was observed in the PTMR group when calculated based on milk yield corrected for that theoretically derived from the mobilization of body reserves (1.98 vs. 1.41 g DMI/kg milk; p = 0.077), with estimated contributions from body reserves of 485 g/day in the CTMR group and 70 g/day in the PTMR group. In conclusion, the use of pelleted total mixed rations in high-yielding dairy ewes enhances feed intake, feed efficiency, milk yield, and energy balance without adversely affecting milk composition or animal health in the short term. Domesticated cats have evolved from the obligate carnivore Felis silvestris. The instinct to eat small frequent meals and a crepuscular feeding rhythm was conserved during domestication. Declining senses, cognitive impairment, and poor oral health decrease food intake in aging cats. Combined with metabolic and physiological changes, they are at risk of sarcopenia and general body condition impairment. Aging cats may, therefore, benefit from modified nutritional strategies to achieve their metabolic energy requirements; however, little is known about feeding patterns in aging cats and influence of food format. This in-home study of 134 aging cats (≥7 years) assessed ad libitum dry, wet, and wet/dry (‘mixed’) feeding regimens to compare 24 h feeding frequency and caloric intakes. Feeding frequency was significantly different between wet and dry (p = 0.02) and mixed and dry diets (p < 0.001), with cats consuming 6.0 (dry), 6.9 (wet), or 7.2 meals (mixed) per day. Mean caloric intakes were significantly higher for dry (262.6 kcal/d) and mixed (222.6 kcal/d) regimens (both p < 0.001) versus wet (138.1 kcal/d). In conclusion, healthy aging cats eat small frequent meals, with feeding frequency and caloric intake influenced by dietary format. These findings support development of evidence-based feeding guidelines for aging cats. Full article

Background/Objectives: Long-term alternate-day fasting (ADF) effectively combats obesity, but its short-term effects are less clear. Like other diets, ADF-induced weight loss often includes muscle loss, and whether protein supplementation mitigates this is uncertain. This study examined the effects of short-term ADF on body composition and health and whether protein supplementation preserves muscle mass during weight loss in young Asian men with an unhealthy BMI (≥23.0 kg/m2). Methods: Twenty participants were recruited for a single-arm trial to address the first objective, and twenty-six participants were randomly assigned to a control (C) or protein group (P) in a follow-up trial to address the second objective. The participants alternated between feeding (ad libitum) and fasting (400–600 kcal consumed between 12 and 2 PM) days for four weeks. The participants in P consumed 25 g of whey protein as part of the fasting-day meal. Pre–post body composition was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Anthropometry, fasting blood glucose (FG), and resting blood pressure (BP) were measured weekly. Results: Since interaction effects were absent, data from all three groups were combined for analyses. Four weeks of ADF significantly (p < 0.001) reduced body (2.4 kg), fat (1.6 kg), and fat-free (0.8 kg) mass. BP and FG levels remained unchanged (p = 0.753–0.919). No significant differences were detected between the C and P groups for any of the measures. Conclusions: Short-term ADF effectively reduced body and fat mass, but it also reduced muscle mass, and this reduction was not attenuated by low-dose protein supplementation (25 g) during fasting days. Future studies should explore the effectiveness of protein or leucine supplementation, throughout the feeding and fasting days, in terms of preserving muscle during weight loss. Full article

Background/Objectives: Excessive intake of sugar-sweetened food (SSF) increases obesity risk. Various psychological, physiological, and environmental factors may drive high consumption of SSF. Due to blocking sweet tastes, the herb Gymnema sylvestre (GS) has been shown to reduce SSF consumption, but its impact on motivation to eat SSF is unknown. This research aimed to qualitatively investigate adults’ perceptions regarding effects of GS on their motivation to eat SSF when administered systematically (three times/day in-between meals, i.e., GS-SYS treatment) or ad libitum (up to six times/day at participants’ discretion, i.e., GS-ADLIB) over 14 days, compared to placebo (taste-matched mint; PLAC-SYS). Methods: This study represents the qualitative investigation of a placebo-controlled randomised cross-over trial, conducted as three 14-day phases. The qualitative investigation included interviews at baseline and three post-testing phases. Seven participants (mean age 34.7 ± 13.8 years; two males, five females) agreed to participate. Twenty-eight interviews (across phases) were thematically analysed using NVivo software, identifying themes and highlighting changes in motivation to eat SSFs across the study. Results: The GS-SYS and GS-ADLIB treatments made SSFs unpleasant to eat and increased mindful eating, subsequently increasing motivation to avoid SSFs. External factors could increase or decrease motivation, depending on individual circumstances. Participants preferred GS-SYS and GS-ADLIB over PLAC-SYS, feeling it was more effective at changing behaviours related to SSF intake. Self-control over SSF intake changed during the study, mostly due to external factors, and in part GS-ADLIB. Conclusions: Participants found both GS administrations successful as motivation to avoid SSF; GS-ADLIB was considered most effective. Full article

Camelina sativa (CS) is an emerging sustainable oilseed crop with interesting feed application potentialities. The research assessed the potentiality of Camelina sativa (CS) in the diet for free-range laying hens, aiming at reaching a nutritional claim. To this purpose, two feeding groups of hens (n = 100 Livorno hens, n = 25 hens/pen) were farmed outdoor and received either a Control diet, which was a commercial diet for laying hens, or a CS diet. The latter was formulated to include the 5% CS cake and 1% CS oil, replacing conventional feedstuffs. Diets were isoprotein and isoenergy and were available ad libitum throughout the laying period (February–September). At day 1, n = 12 eggs/diet were sampled to assess the initial proximate composition and FA profile. Every 7 days the sampling was repeated to analyze the eggs’ FA profile, up to day 35. At the end of the laying season, n = 6 hens/dietary treatment were slaughtered and subjected to meat quality evaluations. Results highlighted that a 28-day feeding was the period required to obtain 227 mg of C18:3 n-3 and 81 mg of C20:5 n-3 + C22:6 n-3/100 g egg, whereas a further 7 days of feeding trial were ineffective in further enhancing the omega-3 FA content of eggs. CS eggs were comparable to Control ones for overall physical traits, proximate composition, and shelf-life. In addition, at the end of the laying period, the meat of CS hens was also found to be healthier than that of Control ones, thanks to a higher omega-3 FA proportion (p < 0.01), which was, however, not sufficient to reach any nutritional claim. Instead, the proximate composition of CS meat was overall comparable to Control hens. In conclusion, the present research demonstrated that feeding Camelina sativa meal and oil to laying hens is feasible and allows to reach the nutritional claim in eggs “rich in omega-3 FA” after a feeding period of 28 days, without any negative effects on other eggs’ quality trials. Camelina sativa can thus be defined as a promising sustainable feedstuff for the poultry sector for diversification purposes and to enhance the nutritional quality of eggs. Full article

The potential of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) and microalgae (MA) in poultry diets has garnered increasing interest due to their high nutritional value and reduced environmental footprint. BSFL represent a sustainable alternative to conventional protein sources such as soybean meal, whereas MA contributes to improved egg quality, particularly through its enrichment with polyunsaturated fatty acids. This study assessed the effects of BSFL and MA inclusion on the growth performance and egg quality of Rhode Island Red (RIR) laying hens. Three diets were formulated: Diet A (10% BSFL), Diet B (10% BSFL + 2% MA), and Diet C (commercial control). The diets were formulated to meet the age-specific nutrient requirements of RIR hens, according to the National Research Council (NRC, 1994) guidelines. A total of 96 four-week-old chicks were randomly allocated to six pens (n = 16 per pen) and provided ad libitum access to feed and water throughout the trial. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of BSFL and MA significantly influenced the growth rate, onset of lay, and egg characteristics. Hens fed Diet B exhibited the highest average weekly body weight gain (0.034 ± 0.001 kg/week); initiated laying at 20 weeks of age, three weeks earlier than hens on Diets B and C; and produced significantly heavier eggs (51.208 ± 0.511 g). Enhanced eggshell quality and yolk pigmentation were also observed. In addition, Diet B enhanced the nutritional profile of the eggs, yielding a higher albumen protein content (76.546 ± 1.382%DM) and lower lipid concentrations (0.451 ± 0.128%DM). These findings underscore the potential of BSFL and MA as functional feed ingredients for improving poultry performance and egg quality in a sustainable production system. Full article

Background: Epidemiological studies on the effect of coffee intake on food consumption have yielded conflicting results. We sought to study the immediate and short-term effects of coffee consumption on food preferences, total calories, and macronutrient consumption within a specific, closely supervised experimental protocol. Methods: Twenty-one normal-weight volunteers completed this crossover, randomized, controlled study. Each volunteer took part in two trials consuming (a) 200 mL of instant coffee providing 5 mg of caffeine/kg body weight or (b) 200 mL of water (control). In both trials, participants were offered an ad libitum lunch meal from a buffet for 30 min. Proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, as well as total caloric consumption were recorded during the initial 30 min period of the experiment (immediate period) as well as during the rest of the day (short-term period). Results: Coffee intake resulted in a statistically significant lower intake of immediate and short-term carbohydrate consumption (p = 0.012 and p = 0.047), of immediate protein consumption (p = 0.019), and of short-term lipid consumption (p = 0.04) versus water consumption. As a result, the calories consumed both immediately upon coffee administration and during the rest of the day of the experiment were significantly lower (p = 0.026 and p = 0.006) in the coffee group. Conclusions: Coffee intake seems to exert an anorexigenic result that last for several hours upon its consumption, particularly for carbohydrates and lipids. Full article

Background: Though evidence is limited, animal products like pork sausages and cheese may affect satiety differently due to their distinct protein, fat, and calcium content. This study therefore compared their acute effects on breakfast using appetite-related markers. Methods: A total of 11 women and 13 men, with a mean age of 23.0 ± 2.6 years and mean BMI of 24.5 ± 2.6 kg/m2, participated in this crossover design study. Concentrations of active ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), cholecystokinin (CCK), insulin, glucose, leptin, and blood lipids were measured. Subjective feelings of appetite using visual analogue scales were analyzed (0–4 h) as a response to two test breakfasts meals with a similar energy and macronutrient content. Appetite feelings and energy intake from an ad libitum buffet lunch were subsequently measured. Data were analyzed using two different ANOVA methods. Results: The pork sausage breakfast was characterized by an earlier triglyceride (TG) peak than the cheese. A slower TG clearance was seen with the cheese breakfast. Ghrelin suppression was longer in the pork sausage breakfast. Active GLP-1 concentration was higher following the cheese breakfast and active GIP declined slower. The two ANOVA methods disagreed regarding the insulin effect. Subjective feelings of hunger before buffet and ad libitum energy intake were higher in males (791 ± 64 kcal) compared with females (344 ± 32 kcal), but did not differ between breakfast types. Conclusions: Acute consumption of pork and cheese of the same energy, fat, and protein content provided detectable differences in appetite-related hormones and lipid responses. Appetite and lipid metabolism were affected by the major differentiators of the test meals, namely calcium, fatty acids and amino acids compositions. Full article

The aim of the study was to investigate the incorporation of white (WL) and yellow lupine (YL) seed meal as a replacement for rapeseed meal (RS) in the diets of finishing bulls with respect to growth, serum biochemical parameters, carcass composition and meat quality, including sensory analysis. A total of 30 Fleckvieh bulls (average initial weight 441 kg; SD = 33 kg) were housed under identical conditions and fed ad libitum diets similar in protein and energy contents, but with different protein sources—YL seed meal (70 g/kg DM), WL seed meal (77 g/kg DM), and RS meal (75 g/kg DM)—for an average of 85 days. The RS bulls gained weight more rapidly (p < 0.05) and were more efficient (lower feed to gain ratio; p < 0.001) than the YL animals, with the WL group being intermediary. The slaughter and carcass traits, most blood parameters, and meat quality attributes measured in two different muscles were not affected by diet. The proportions and contents of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were higher in YL and WL meat (p < 0.001), whilst polyunsaturated fatty acid proportions were higher in RS meat (p < 0.001). Several meat texture characteristics were slightly more favourable in the YL samples compared to the other treatment groups. In conclusion, WL could be used as a replacement of RS in the diets for finishing bulls. However, further research is needed to examine different varieties and inclusion levels of YL in cattle feeding. Full article

Background/Objectives: Xylitol, a natural low-caloric bulk sweetener, is increasingly used as a sugar alternative due to its low-glycemic and low-insulinemic properties. The aim was to investigate the effect of orally administered xylitol, sucrose, and acesulfame potassium (ace-K) on energy intake during a subsequent ad libitum test meal. Methods: In this randomized, controlled, double-blind, crossover trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05671965, 20 December 2022), we included 20 healthy participants with normal body weight. Over four study visits, participants consumed an oral preload containing 33.5 g xylitol, 33.5 g sucrose, or 0.1675 g ace-K dissolved in 300 mL water, or 300 mL pure water as control. Participants were provided with an ad libitum test meal 15 min after the preload consumption, and both energy intake and total energy intake (= preload + ad libitum test meal) were assessed. Blood samples were collected to quantify cholecystokinin (CCK), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), glucose, and insulin concentrations. Results: Total energy intake was lower in response to xylitol and ace-K compared to sucrose (pTukey < 0.03), with no differences between xylitol and ace-K or water. Plasma CCK concentrations were higher in response to xylitol compared to sucrose, ace-K, and water (pHolm < 0.01), whereas GLP-1 concentrations did not differ between the preloads. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were lower in response to xylitol compared to sucrose (pHolm < 0.01), but xylitol led to an increase in insulin compared to ace-K and water (pHolm < 0.01). Conclusions: The consumption of oral preloads sweetened with xylitol or ace-K prior to an ad libitum test meal result in a lower total energy intake compared to a preload with sucrose. Full article

Chickens possess a well-developed vision that allows them to perceive a wide range of the color spectrum. In addition, they display an inherent sensitivity toward specific light spectra, which suggests that coloring feed could influence feed preference, feed intake and growth performance. This trial assessed the effect of feed coloring on broiler feed color preferences. A total of 216 day-old Cobb by-product males were randomly distributed into 18 battery cages, each containing 12 chicks and subjected to three dietary treatments from 1 to 21 days, resulting in six replicates per dietary treatment. Feed color treatments consisted of a common corn–soybean meal-based undyed basal (UB) broiler starter diet, which was dyed to obtain blue-colored (B) and purple-colored (P) diets, resulting in a total of three diets used to create the feed combinations. Two feed troughs were affixed to each cage, allowing for the assignment of dietary treatments as follows: UB-B, UB-P, and B-P. The birds had ad libitum access to feed and water throughout the study. Feed consumption data were collected at 7-day intervals. Additionally, bird weights were measured at 1 and 21 days. The data were analyzed as a completely randomized design using the SAS GLIMMIX and TTEST procedures. Overall, broilers exhibited a preference for the UB diet compared to the B and P diets. Broilers had a 27.5 and 29.2% higher (p < 0.05) feed consumption of UB feed compared to P feed from 1 to 14 and 1 to 21 days, respectively. In addition, broilers tended to have a higher (p = 0.098) consumption of UB feed compared to B feed from 1 to 14 days. No differences were observed in feed consumption between B and P diets during the experimental period. Based on feed consumption data, broilers displayed a preference towards the UB feed when paired with B or P diets. Feed coloring did not impact the mortality of broilers and did not result in adverse growth. Overall, broilers preferred the UB diet over the B and P diets and showed no preference between B and P diets. Based on the results of this trial, diets that appear more conventional, compared to dyed diets, can promote consumption. Special care must be taken to avoid ingredients that could alter the diet’s coloration. Full article
