This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies concerning laser heat treatment (LHT) of structural and tool steels, with particular attention to the 21NiCrMo2 steel used for carburized gear wheels. Analysis includes the influence of critical laser processing conditions—including power output, motion speed, spot size, and focusing distance—on surface microhardness, hardening depth, and microstructure development. The findings indicate that the energy density is the dominant factor that affects the outcomes of LHT. Optimal results, in the form of a high surface microhardness and a sufficient depth of hardening, were achieved within the energy density range of 80–130 J/mm2, allowing for martensitic transformation while avoiding defects such as melting or cracking. At densities below 50 J/mm2, incomplete hardening occurred with minimal microhardness improvement. On the contrary, densities exceeding 150–180 J/mm2 caused surface overheating and degradation. For carburized 21NiCrMo2 steel, the most effective parameters included 450–1050 W laser power, 1.7–2.5 mm/s scanning speed, and 2.0–2.3 mm beam diameter. The review confirms that process control through energy-based parameters allows for reliable prediction and optimization of LHT for industrial applications, particularly in components exposed to cyclic loads. A novel stainless steel with high Mn and Mo content (much higher than traditional stainless steel), designated CH241SS, was developed as a potential replacement for Cr-Mo-V alloy steel in the cold forging applications of precision industry. Through carbon reduction in an environmentally friendly manner and a two-stage heat treatment process, the hardness of as-cast CH241 was tailored from HRC 37 to HRC 29, thereby meeting the industrial specifications of cold-forged steel (≤HRC 30). X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-cast microstructure revealed the presence of a small amount of ferrite, martensite, austenite, and alloy carbides. After heat treatment, CH241 exhibited a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite with dispersed Cr(Ni-Mo) alloy carbides. The CH241 alloy demonstrated excellent high-temperature stability. No noticeable softening occurred after 72 h for the second-stage heat treatment. Based on the mechanical and room-temperature tensile fatigue properties of CH241-F (forging material) and CH241-ST (soft-tough heat treatment), it was demonstrated that the CH241 stainless steel was superior to the traditional stainless steel 4xx in terms of strength and fatigue life. Therefore, CH241 stainless steel can be introduced into cold forging and can be used in precision fatigue application. The relevant data include composition design and heat treatment properties. This study is an important milestone in assisting the upgrading of the vehicle and aerospace industries. Full article

The microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints of API 5L X-52 steel plates cladded with AISI 316L-Si austenitic stainless steel were evaluated. The gas metal arc welding process with pulsed arc (GMAW-P) and controlled arc oscillation were used to join the bimetallic plates. After the root welding pass, buttering with an ERNiCrMo-3 filler wire was performed and multi-pass welding followed using an ER70S-6 electrode. The results obtained by optical and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the shielding atmosphere, welding parameters, and electric arc oscillation enabled good arc stability and proper molten metal transfer from the filler wire to the sidewalls of the joint during welding. Vickers microhardness (HV) and tensile tests were performed for correlating microstructural and mechanical properties. The mixture of ERNiCrMo-3 and ER70S-6 filler materials presented fine interlocked grains with a honeycomb network shape of the Ni–Fe mixture with Ni-rich grain boundaries and a cellular-dendritic and equiaxed solidification. Variation of microhardness at the weld metal (WM) in the middle zone of the bimetallic welded joints (BWJ) is associated with the manipulation of the welding parameters, promoting precipitation of carbides in the austenitic matrix and formation of martensite during solidification of the weld pool and cooling of the WM. The BWJ exhibited a mechanical strength of 380 and 520 MPa for the yield stress and ultimate tensile strength, respectively. These values are close to those of the as-received API 5L X-52 steel. An analysis of the working surfaces of cylindrical gears after scuffing shock tests allowed for the assessment of the effect of loading conditions on the form of damage to the tooth surfaces. Unlike the method of scuffing under severe conditions, where loading is applied gradually, the presented tests employed direct maximum loading—shock loading—without prior lapping of the gears under lower loads. This loading method significantly increases the vulnerability of the analyzed components to scuffing, enabling an evaluation of their limit in terms of operational properties. To identify the changes and the types of the teeth’s working surface damage, the following microscopy techniques were applied: scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with EDS microanalyzer, optical interferential profilometry (WLI), atomic force microscope (AFM), and optical microscopy. The results allowed us to define the characteristic damage mechanisms and assess the efficiency of the applied DLC coatings when it comes to resistance to scuffing in shock scuffing conditions. Tribological tests were performed by means of an FZG T-12U gear test rig in a power circulating system to test cylindrical gear scuffing. The gears were made from 18CrNiMo7-6 steel and 35CrMnSiA nano-bainitic steel and coated with W-DLC/CrN. Full article

The design of friction materials with integrated friction reduction and wear resistance functions has been a research challenge for many researchers and scholars, based on this problem, this paper proposes a nickel-based hard-soft composite coating structure. With 20CrMo steel as the matrix material, Ni20 powder doped with reinforced phase WC as hard coating material, using laser melting technology to prepare nickel-based hard coating on the surface of 20CrMo. PTFE emulsion and MoS2 as a soft coating are prepared on the hard coating, and the nickel-based hard-soft composite coating is formed. At 6N-0.3 m/s, the new interface structure obtains the optimum tribological performance, and compared to 20CrMo, the friction coefficient and wear amount are reduced by 83% and 93% respectively. The new friction interface can obtain stable and prominent tribological properties at wide load and low to high speed, which can provide the guidance on the structural design of friction reduction and wear resistance materials. Based on laser cladding technology, six composite coatings with different amounts of Inconel 718 and 0~5% CeO2 were successfully prepared on the 316L stainless steel substrate. The effect of different amounts of CeO2 particles was investigated and discussed, such as microstructure, phases, elemental distribution, microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. The results show that the phases are composed of γ~(Fe, Ni), Ni3Nb, (Nb0.03Ti0.97)Ni3, and MCX(M = Cr, Nb and Mo). When the amount of CeO2 particles is higher than 1%, some Ce2O3 compounds can be detected in coatings. The average microhardness values of N0~N5 are 604.6, 754.5, 771.6, 741.4, 694.5 and 677.3 HV0.2, respectively. There is a trend that the microhardness increases firstly and then decreases, because an appropriate amount of CeO2 can improve the solid solution strength. The average wear rate values of N0~N5 are 2.97 × 10−5, 1.22 × 10−5, 0.94 × 10−5, 1.53 × 10−5, 1.81 × 10−5 and 2.26 × 10−5 mm3∙N−1∙min−1, respectively. The N2 coating has the smallest corrosion current density of 2.05 × 10−4 A·cm−2, which is about 56% of the N0 coating. When the amount of CeO2 particles is 2%, the coating has the best wear resistance and corrosion resistance due to fine grains and Cr, Nb and Mo compounds. Full article

A novel processing route of producing CrFeNiMo, Co0.5CrFeNiMo, and Al0.5CrFeNiMo high-entropy alloy coatings was proposed in this work. Pre-alloyed HEAs were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) in order to fabricate electrodes for electrospark deposition (ESD) coatings on carbon steel substrates. Investigations were performed to observe aspects such as phase composition and stability, contamination level, homogeneity, elemental distribution, and microstructural integrity. The results indicated phase stability and lower porosity when increasing the SPS temperature by 50 °C for all cases, with tetragonal distortion related to the HEAs’ severe lattice distortion core effect. The coating surface analysis indicated that a continuous and compact coating was obtained, correlated with the ESD layering count, but microfissures were present after 6 layers were applied due to the reduced ductility combined with rapid cooling under Ar atmosphere. The chemical integrity of both the sintered samples and the coatings was preserved during the processing, revealing a uniform elemental distribution with no contaminations or impurities present. The results indicated successful HEA sintering and deposition, highlighting the potential of the combined SPS-ESD process for high-performance material fabrication with possible applications in aggressive environments. This study investigates the effects of B4C content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt.%) on the microstructure and wear resistance of laser cladding 316 stainless steel coatings on a 2Cr12MoV steel substrate. The coating was prepared by laser cladding technology. The phase composition, microstructure evolution, microhardness, and tribological properties of the coating were analyzed. The results show that the decomposition of B4C particles is complete, and the phase composition of the coating includes Austenite, Fe23 (B3C3), Cr23 (B1.5C4.5), and a Fe-Ni solid solution. The increase in B4C content significantly increased the microhardness of the material from 206 HV0.2 (substrate) to 829 HV0.2 (10 wt.% B4C) by 4.02 times. Wear resistance also improved, with the 10 wt.% coating exhibiting the lowest wear rate (10 × 10−8 mm3/N·m) due to fine-grained and dispersion strengthening mechanisms. However, excessive B4C (10 wt.%) induced cracks from increased brittleness, resulting in higher friction coefficients. The wear mechanism consists of fatigue wear, adhesive wear, and oxidative wear, and the degree of wear decreases with the increase in B4C content. This work demonstrates that the addition of B4C effectively improves the hardness and wear resistance of 316 stainless steel coatings, providing practical insights into surface engineering in high wear applications. 22MnCrNiMo steel, a high-strength low-alloy material, is primarily used in the production of mooring chains for offshore oil platforms, offshore wind turbines, and ships. The application of additive manufacturing technology allows for the direct fabrication of seamless mooring chains. This paper investigates the selective laser melting (SLM) process parameters for 22MnCrNiMo mooring chain steel, analyzing the effects of different process parameters on the microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical properties of the steel. The experimental results demonstrate that under the laser parameters of 200 W laser power, 800 mm/s scanning speed, 30 μm layer thickness, and 110 μm scanning spacing, the SLM-formed parts exhibit the best comprehensive mechanical properties, with a microhardness of 513.2 HV0.5, a tensile strength of 1223 MPa, a yield strength of 1114 MPa, an elongation of 8.5%, and an impact energy of 127 J. This study reveals the microstructure evolution and the mechanism of enhanced mechanical properties in SLM-fabricated 22MnCrNiMo steel, providing a new approach for the preparation of high-performance mooring chains using 22MnCrNiMo steel. The isothermal bainitic transformation kinetics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the quenched low-carbon high-strength steel have been investigated via dilatometric measurements, microstructural characterization, and mechanical tests. The results show that the pre-transformed isothermal bainite promotes martensitic transformation, increasing the martensitic transformation temperature, and enhancing the transformation rate. The microstructure of the 400 °C isothermal steel consists predominantly of lath bainite ferrite with dot/slender M-A constituents, whereas the steel treated at 450 °C contains a combination of martensite/lath bainite and granular bainite. The presence of massive M-A constituents contributes to brittle fracture as these constituents tend to promote crack initiation. Hence, the 450 °C treatment, which leads to the formation of massive M-A constituents, induces brittleness, while the finer M-A constituents formed at 400 °C exert minimal influence on the toughness and result in a more stable microstructure owing to their small size and the surrounding fine lath microstructure. The differences in microstructure and properties between the steels treated at 400 °C and 450 °C illustrate the importance of controlling the quenching cooling rate in the high-temperature bainitic transformation region during thick plate quenching processes. In this paper, the wear characteristics of 20GrNi2MoV bearing steel under different working conditions were investigated by finite element simulation considering microscopic grain size and pin-on-disk friction experiments, and the wear mechanism during friction and wear was explained, along with a finite element model that took initial grain size and material organization into account to predict the process of subsurface crack initiation during friction. The results show that high-speed and large-load conditions have a significant effect on the wear characteristics of dry friction of pinned disks. The effect of high speed and load will greatly reduce the time of the grinding stage, and the friction coefficient can quickly reach a stable state; the roughness of the surface of the friction pair increases with the increase in load, but the roughness shows a tendency to first increase and then decrease with the increase in sliding speed. Martensitic phase transformation occurs in the friction subsurface, and the decrease in Mn element content is one of the causes of cracks on the subsurface of the material; with the increase in load and speed, the damage form of the sample disk material is changed from abrasive wear and adhesive wear to the mixture of three kinds of wear: abrasive wear, adhesive wear, and cracks. In addition, the simulation of crack initiation and growth agrees well with the experiment, which proves the accuracy of crack prediction. This study provides a reference for crack initiation prediction in the study of pinned disk friction vises. Full article

In this paper, gears made of 18Cr2Ni2MoVNbA steel were taken as the research object, and their cooling curves under different flow rate conditions were determined. By calculating the corresponding heat transfer coefficients, a finite element simulation method was used to study the temperature field distribution law of different flow rate combinations on the gears in the cooling process of pressure quenching. The results show that among the four representative flow combinations, the working condition 1 (A + (A − b − c) + (A − b − c)) has the smallest temperature difference between the inner and outer gears, and can better reduce the temperature difference between the inner and outer parts. Furthermore, in the pressure quenching process of gears, the appropriate extension of the quenching time can keep the quenched gear with a lower average temperature, while promoting the martensitic transformation on the surface of the workpiece. Comparing the simulation results with the experimental data, the reliability of the pressure-quenching temperature field model is verified, which can provide theoretical guidance for the optimization of the pressure quenching process. Nano-precipitates play a vital role in the development of ultra-high strength steels (UHSSs). In recent decades, the B2-NiAl phase, which forms highly coherent interfaces with the BCC-Fe matrix, has attracted significant attention for enhancing the strength of UHSSs. However, direct experimental investigation of alloying elements—specifically their atomic distribution and the resulting effects on the interfacial bonding strength of nano-precipitates—remains challenging. This study uses density functional theory (DFT)-based first-principles calculations to investigate the role of alloying elements in modifying interfacial characteristics. Six elements—Al, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and C—are introduced at various occupation sites within the coherent interface model to calculate the formation energy. The predicted preferential distribution of solid-solution atoms aligns well with experimental findings. Stable configurations of alloying segregation are selected for first-principles rigid tensile fracture tests along the <001> direction. Electronic structure analysis reveals that Co, Cr, and Mo segregation enhances interface strength due to solute-induced high charge density and the preservation of bonding characteristics of bulk phases at the interface. The results offer valuable insights and practical guidance for developing novel ultrahigh-strength structural steels strengthened by B2-NiAl. Full article

The Effect of Cryogenic Treatment and Tempering Duration on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Martensitic Stainless Steel 13Cr-2Ni-2Mo

Martensitic stainless steel (MSS) is widely used in several parts of automobiles where high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance are required. However, the metastability of retained austenite can transform into martensite under severe deformation, adversely affecting material properties. Cryogenic treatments (CTs) have been extensively employed in iron-based alloys for fastener application due to their advantageous effect. This study explores the heat treatment processes applied to 13Cr-2Ni-2Mo martensitic stainless steel (MSS), including austenitizing, cryogenic treatment, and tempering cycles. Cryogenic treatment at (−150 °C) for varying durations, followed by tempering at 200 °C for 2 h, and the impact of post-cryogenic tempering at 200 °C for different tempering duration on the microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. Experimental results indicate that the sample quenched at 1040 °C for 2 h (CHT) contains lath martensite, retained austenite, δ-ferrite, and undissolved carbide precipitation. Compared to as-quenched samples, hardness decreased by 5.04%, 7.24%, and 7.32% after tempering for 2 h, 5 h, and 10 h, respectively. Extending cryogenic durations to 2 h, 12 h, and 20 h promoted nucleation of a mixture of M3C and M23C6 small globular carbides (SGCs) and grain refinement but resulted in hardness reductions of 5.04%, 5.32%, and 8.36%, respectively. The reduction in hardness is primarily attributed to a decrease in solid solution strengthening and promoted carbide coarsening. Full article

The high-temperature performance of 10CrNi2Mo3Cu2V steel is critically governed by the distribution of Cu-rich phases. This study systematically investigated the evolution of solute redistribution, Cu-rich phase precipitation, microstructural transformations, and mechanical properties in 10CrNi2Mo3Cu2V alloy under varying aging temperatures. Advanced characterization techniques, including atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), were employed to analyze microstructural features and phase formation in both as-built and heat-treated specimens. The key findings reveal that copper atom segregation initiates at a tempering temperature of 350 °C. Upon increasing the temperature to 450 °C, extensive precipitation of nanoscale copper clusters is observed. Temperatures exceeding 450 °C trigger the formation of ε-Cu phases, which undergo subsequent coarsening. Notably, these copper clusters and Cu-rich precipitates act as dislocation pinning sites, promoting crack nucleation and propagation, thereby markedly degrading the alloy’s impact energy absorption capacity. The critical diameter for Orowan mechanism-governed strengthening by Cu-rich phases is determined to be ~6 nm, while the average diameter of matrix-penetrating Cu-rich particles is approximately 1.46 nm. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that the combined contributions of the Orowan bypass mechanism and particle-cutting mechanism yield a strength enhancement of ~219 MPa, which exhibits excellent agreement with experimentally measured strength increments. These results provide critical insights into the interplay between microstructural evolution and mechanical degradation in precipitation-strengthened steels under thermal exposure. Full article
