This paper aims to explore the potentialities and systemic relationships between the ‘regenerative’ process and ‘circular economy’ concept within the conservation and reuse of a built cultural heritage framework through contextualizing the concept of ‘process programming’ of the Preventive and Planned Conservation methodology. As a case study, it depicts a decommissioned industrial agricultural silo in Corbetta—a small historic city with its hinterland located in the protected Southern Milan Regional Agricultural Park. The context includes the industrial agricultural lands of the 20th century, together with historical water infrastructure, farmhouses, and the typical flora of the Lombardy region, all evidences of Corbetta’s rural archaeological values and the sophisticated material culture of its past collective production/economy system—the locus in which the silo was once one of the main productive symbols of Corbetta’s agricultural identity. Within such a complex and challenging context, this paper argues in favor of the constructive role of such a methodology in upholding circular economy principles within the process of conservation and reuse of the silo, highlighting its broader application of the ‘coevolution’ concept from a multidisciplinary long-term perspective. This review summarises the possible applications and basic methodologies for the synthesis of six-membered polyazo heterocycles, namely, diazines, triazines, and tetrazines. The time period covered by the analysed works ranges from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. This period was chosen because it was during this time that synthetic chemistry, as defined by physicochemical research methods, became capable of solving such complex problems as efficiently as possible. The first part of the review describes the applications of polyazo heterocyclic compounds, whose frameworks are found in the composition of drugs, dyes, and functional molecules for materials chemistry, as well as in a wide variety of natural compounds and their synthetic analogues. The review also systematises the methods for assembling six-membered aromatic polyazo heterocycles, including intramolecular and sequential cyclisation, which determine the possible structural and functional diversity based on the presence and arrangement of nitrogen atoms and the position of the corresponding substituents. Ozone (O3) occurs in nature as a chemical compound made of three oxygen atoms. It is an unstable, highly oxidative gas that rapidly decomposes into oxygen. The therapeutic use of O3 dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and is currently based on the application of low doses, inducing a moderate oxidative stress that stimulates the antioxidant cellular defenses without causing cell damage. Low O3 doses also induce anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects, and their anticancer potential is under investigation. In addition, the oxidative properties of O3 make it an excellent antibacterial, antimycotic, and antiviral agent. Thanks to these properties, O3 is currently widely used in several medical fields. However, its chemical instability represents an application limit, and ozonated oil is the only stabilized form of medical O3. In recent years, novel O3 formulations have been proposed for their sustained and more efficient administration, based on nanotechnology. This review offers an overview of the nanocarriers designed for the delivery of medical O3, and of their therapeutic applications. The reviewed articles demonstrate that research is active and productive, though it is a rather new entry in the nanotechnological field. Liposomes, nanobubbles, nanoconstructed hydrogels, polymeric nanoparticles, and niosomes were designed to deliver O3 and have been proven to exert antiseptic, anticancer, and pro-regenerative effects when administered in vitro and in vivo. Improving the therapeutic administration of O3 through nanocarriers is a just-started challenge, and multiple prospects may be foreseen. Full article

This study examines how the newly established United States pursued economic development through diplomatic and commercial initiatives with the Ottoman Empire, navigating regional powers and the era’s political-economic conditions. It analyzes using American archival sources how America endeavored to establish commercial and diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, which it viewed as critical markets in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before signing any formal agreement. The research tracks how these early efforts laid foundations for what would become one of the world’s largest economies. The study analyzes America’s diplomatic efforts to secure an agreement with the Ottoman Empire prior to the 7 May 1830 trade agreement—which laid the foundation for bilateral relations—alongside the reactions of regional powers, the prevailing conditions of the period, and the Ottoman administration’s reluctance due to various factors, based on U.S. archival sources that, to the best of our knowledge, have not previously been utilized in existing studies. Johannes Althusius (1563–1638) was a pioneer of early modern federalism. Opposing Jean Bodin’s theory of absolute sovereignty, his theory, centered on association and symbiosis, laid the groundwork for later concepts such as associationalism, consociationalism, and the principle of subsidiarity. While his ideas have been rediscovered and reinterpreted by scholars since the 20th century, systematic research on his federalist framework, especially contrasting it with rival theories of that time, remains insufficient. This article addresses this research gap by systematically exploring Althusius’s federalism. It argues that Althusius’s covenant-based, multi-level associational/federal framework provided a counter-theory to the concept of absolute sovereignty. Systematically studying his federalism not only helps to restore his federalist ideas to their rightful place in the history of federalist thought, but also provides insights for contemporary governance paradigms struggling with modern pluralism. Since its discovery in the late 19th century, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) has had a significant medical and societal impact, primarily affecting newborns, toddlers, and young adults. While new pharmaceutical strategies are effective in treating SMA in a particular subset of patients, continued research is necessary to improve the well-being of patients. Treatments are needed for those who do not respond to newly approved drugs and older patients with significantly compromised neuron systems. After summarizing SMA genotypes, phenotypes, and approved pharmacological treatments, this review presents ongoing trials for approved and new molecules, new formulations, and administration methods. Based on the work of our lab, we also discuss nutritional interventions that aim to counteract the oxidative stress present in SMA cells. Finally, we assess rehabilitative interventions, focusing on psychological approaches. Full article

Posidonia oceanica seagrass, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, provides ecological goods and ecosystem services of paramount importance. In shallow and sheltered bays, P. oceanica meadows can reach the sea surface, with leaf tips slightly emerging, forming fringing and barrier reefs. During the 20th century, P. oceanica declined conspicuously in the vicinity of large ports and urbanized areas, particularly in the north-western Mediterranean. The main causes of decline are land reclamation, anchoring, bottom trawling, turbidity and pollution. Artificial sand nourishment of beaches has also been called into question, with sand flowing into the sea, burying and destroying neighbouring meadows. A fringing reef of P. oceanica, located at Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer, near the port of Toulon (Provence, France), is severely degraded. Analysis of aerial photos shows that, since the beginning of the 2000s, it has remained stable in some parts or continued to decline in others. This contrasts with the trend towards recovery, observed in France, thanks to e.g., the legally protected status of P. oceanica, and the reduction of pollution and coastal developments. The sand nourishment of the study beach, renewed every year, with the sand being washed or blown very quickly (within a few months) from the beach into the sea, burying the P. oceanica meadow, seems the most likely explanation. Other factors, such as pollution, trampling by beachgoers and overgrazing, may also play a role in the decline. Full article

Early printed books, particularly incunabula, are invaluable archives of the beginnings of modern educational systems. However, their complex layouts, antique typefaces, and page degradation caused by bleed-through and ink fading pose significant challenges for automatic transcription. In this work, we present a modular pipeline that addresses these problems by combining modern layout analysis and language modeling techniques. The pipeline begins with historical layout-aware text segmentation using Kraken, a neural network-based tool tailored for early typographic structures. Initial optical character recognition (OCR) is then performed with Kraken’s recognition engine, followed by post-correction using a fine-tuned ByT5 transformer model trained on manually aligned line-level data. By learning to map noisy OCR outputs to verified transcriptions, the model substantially improves recognition quality. The pipeline also integrates a preprocessing stage based on our previous work on bleed-through removal using robust statistical filters, including non-local means, Gaussian mixtures, biweight estimation, and Gaussian blur. This step enhances the legibility of degraded pages prior to OCR. The entire solution is open, modular, and scalable, supporting long-term preservation and improved accessibility of cultural heritage materials. Experimental results on 15th-century incunabula show a reduction in the Character Error Rate (CER) from around 38% to around 15% and an increase in the Bilingual Evaluation Understudy (BLEU) score from 22 to 44, confirming the effectiveness of our approach. This work demonstrates the potential of integrating transformer-based correction with layout-aware segmentation to enhance OCR accuracy in digital humanities applications. Full article

The first half of the 19th century witnessed the rise of Romantic poetry, which focused in depth on individual consciousness, inner worlds, and metaphysical inquiries. This poetic orientation became particularly evident in works centred on themes such as solitude, alienation, and existential quests. Within this context, the present study aims to examine the archetypal and poetic resonances of the poetic voice in Mihail Lermontov’s poem The Demon, based on its sixth and final version dated 1841, in relation to Nikoloz Baratashvili’s poem Secret Voice. Lermontov’s poem is analyzed through the English translation by Charles Johnston, published in 1983, while Baratashvili’s poem is discussed based on the 24-line version included in the fifth edition (1895) of the anthology Poems and Letters (Leksebi da Tserilebi). This study explores the thematic and structural similarities between the two poems within the framework of comparative literature and psychoanalytic criticism, focusing on Romantic archetypes, the uncanny, the shadow figure, and ontological solitude. Furthermore, the dialogue established between Lermontov’s demonic narrator and Baratashvili’s introspective poetic voice reopens discussions on the boundaries of cultural memory, oral narrative patterns, and poetic identity. Ultimately, this comparative analysis reveals the implicit influences of The Demon on Georgian poetry and discusses the intercultural resonances of themes such as voice, self, and archetype in Romantic poetry. Background/Objectives: The Plague of Justinian marked the beginning of the First Pandemic (541–750 CE), yet no genomic evidence of Yersinia pestis has previously been recovered from the Eastern Mediterranean, where the outbreak was first recorded. This study aimed to determine whether Y. pestis was present in a mid-6th to early 7th century mass grave in Jerash, Jordan, and to characterize its genome within the broader context of First Pandemic strains. Methods: We analyzed samples from multiple individuals recovered from the Jerash mass grave. Initial screening for potential pathogen presence was conducted using proteomics. Select samples were subjected to ancient DNA extraction and whole genome sequencing. Comparative genomic and phylogenetic analyses were conducted to assess strain identity and evolutionary placement. Results: Genomic sequencing recovered Y. pestis DNA from five individuals, revealing highly similar genomes. All strains clustered tightly with other First Pandemic lineages but were notably recovered from a region geographically close to the pandemic’s historical epicenter for the first time. The near-identical genomes across diverse individuals suggest an outbreak of a single circulating lineage at the time of this outbreak. Conclusions: This study provides the first genomic evidence of Y. pestis in the Eastern Mediterranean during the First Pandemic, linking archaeological findings with pathogen genomics near the origin point of the Plague of Justinian. Summary Sentence: Genomic evidence links Y. pestis to the First Pandemic in an ancient city. Full article

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is increasingly recognized as a multifactorial disorder driven by a combination of disruptions in proteostasis and organelle communication. The 2020 Lancet commission reported that approximately 10 million people worldwide were affected by AD in the mid-20th century. AD is the most prevalent cause of dementia. By early 2030, the global cost of dementia is projected to rise by USD 2 trillion per year, with up to 85% of that cost attributed to daily patient care. Several factors have been implicated in the progression of neurodegeneration, including increased oxidative stress, the accumulation of misfolded proteins, the formation of amyloid plaques and aggregates, the unfolded protein response (UPR), and mitochondrial–endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium homeostasis. However, the exact triggers that initiate these pathological processes remain unclear, in part because clinical symptoms often emerge gradually and subtly, complicating early diagnosis. Among the early hallmarks of neurodegeneration, elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the buildup of misfolded proteins are believed to play pivotal roles in disrupting proteostasis, leading to cognitive deficits and neuronal cell death. The accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles is a characteristic feature of AD. These features contribute to chronic neuroinflammation, which is marked by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines that exacerbate oxidative stress. Given these interconnected mechanisms, targeting stress-related signaling pathways, such as oxidative stress (ROS) generated in the mitochondria and ER, ER stress, UPR, and cytosolic chaperones, represents a promising strategy for therapeutic intervention. This review focuses on the relationship between stress chaperone responses and organelle function, particularly the interaction between mitochondria and the ER, in the development of new therapies for AD and related neurodegenerative disorders. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a significant driving force in the development of technology and industry. It is also integrated with music as music AI in music generation and analysis. It originated from early algorithmic composition techniques in the mid-20th century. Recent advancements in machine learning and neural networks have enabled innovative music generation and exploration. This article surveys the development history and technical route of music AI, analyzes the current status and limitations of music artificial intelligence across various areas, including music generation and composition, rehabilitation and treatment, as well as education and learning. It reveals that music AI has become a promising creator in the field of music generation. The influence of music AI on the music industry and the challenges it encounters are explored. Additionally, an emotional music generation system driven by multimodal signals is proposed. Although music artificial intelligence technology still needs to be further improved, with the continuous breakthroughs in technology, it will have a more profound impact on all areas of music. This article examines two Caribbean texts which use 20th-century journeys on passenger ships as opportunities to investigate ways in which colonial anxieties of race and gender are worked out through nautical desires. Mayra Montero’s erotic novel La última noche que pasé contigo (1991) and Claude McKay’s Romance in Marseille (2020) both wrestle with the imagined and material consequences of pervasive anti-blackness. They also raise crucial questions about embodied practices of struggle for survival. My analysis seeks to answer the following questions. What happens when anti-blackness masquerades as desire? How do we read and represent an anti-blackness that seeks to consume parts of the Caribbean and then dispense as refuse with what it sees as superfluous? What reading practices might we adopt in order to make sense of Caribbean bodies dehumanized on their own shores, and what narrative solutions might Caribbean fiction propose that might begin to restore humanity and value to these bodies? Human exploitation has been a major driver of marine turtle population declines, particularly affecting naturally scarce species such as the pantropical hawksbill turtle. Although hawksbill sea turtles have been documented in the Gulf of California since the early 20th century, data on their historical demography during periods of high exploitation in this region are nonexistent. We investigated the size structure of hawksbill turtles from the Western Central Gulf of California by examining a unique sample of decorative taxidermies, corresponding to 31 specimens captured during fishing operations near Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, Mexico, between 1980 and 1990. An analysis of the curved carapace measures revealed a length range (nuchal notch to posterior of supracaudals) of 29.5–59.5 cm (mean = 38.75 ± 6.67 cm) and a width range of 25.0–51.5 cm (mean = 33.63 ± 5.66 cm), with 87% of specimens having lengths between 30 and 45 cm. Based on the carapace length measurements, we estimated the ages to be between 7 and 20 years, indicating that the population included juveniles. Our findings provide baseline data for an understudied period and region, suggesting that this area previously served as an important juvenile habitat. These results contribute essential historical demographic information for conservation planning. Full article

This paper investigates the integration of Virgil Abloh’s Personal Design Language (PDL) within the broader context of architectural methodology. Through a series of workshops, architecture students and professionals engaged with Abloh’s principles to examine how subtle aesthetic and functional adjustments, grounded in artistic disciplines, can produce transformative effects on iconic 20th-century architectural forms. These workshops underscored the potential of Abloh’s interdisciplinary approach to enhance architectural discourse by introducing a novel lens through which contemporary design methodologies can be evaluated. The findings reveal that employing weighted coefficients for less commonly utilized design principles enabled novel evaluation processes, fostering creative experimentation and innovation. Additionally, this research highlights discrepancies that may arise when employing differing evaluation methodologies in the assessment of architectural work, thereby initiating a critical discussion on the public acceptance of architectural designs and the implications of varied grading frameworks in professional practice.
