This paper presents a comparative analysis of electric field (E-field) mitigation in inductive power transfer (IPT) systems. It focuses on how distributed capacitor placement interacts with coil topology to influence E-field emissions. The study compares traditional sequential-winding coils and the alternating voltage phase coil (AVPC), which employs a sequential inversion winding (SIW) structure to enforce a 180° phase voltage opposition between adjacent turns. While capacitor segmentation is a known method for E-field reduction, this work is the first to systematically evaluate its effects across both conventional and phase-inverted coils. The findings reveal that capacitor placement serves as a topology-dependent design parameter. Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations and experimental validation show that while capacitor placement has a moderate influence on traditional coils due to in-phase voltage relationships, AVPC coils are highly sensitive to segmentation patterns. When capacitors align with the SIW phase structure, destructive interference significantly reduces E-field emissions. Improper capacitor placement disrupts phase cancellation and negates this benefit. This study resolves a critical design gap by establishing that distributed compensation acts as a tuning mechanism in conventional coils but becomes a primary constraint in phase-inverted topologies. The results demonstrate that precise capacitor placement aligned with the coil topology significantly enhances E-field mitigation up to 60% in AVPC coils, greatly outperforming traditional coil configurations and providing actionable guidance for high-power wireless charging applications. In this research project a large linear electromagnetic actuator (LLEA) was designed and manufactured. The electromagnetic performance was published in previous works, but in this paper we focus on the technological challenges related to the manufacturing in particular. This LLEA was based on the magnet-free switched-reluctance principle, having six effective energised stator “teeth” and four passive mover parts (4:6 ratio). Various aspects and challenges encountered during the manufacturing, transport, and assembly are discussed. Thermal expansion of steel contributed to the decision of the modular design, with each module having 1.3 m in length, with a 2 mm longitudinal dilatation gap. The initial prototype was tested with a 10.6 m length, with plans to extend the test track to 60 m, which was fully achievable due to the modular design and required 29 tons of electrical steel to be built. The stator laminations were cut by a bespoke progressive tool with stamping, and other parts by a CO2 laser. Mounting was based on welding (back of the stator) and clamping plates (through insulated bolts). The linear longitudinal force was on the order of 8 kN, with the main air gap of 7.5–10 mm on either side of the mover. The lateral forces could exceed 40 kN and were supported by appropriate construction steel members bolted to the concrete floor. The overall mechanical tolerances after installation remained below 0.5 mm. The technology used for constructing this prototype demonstrated the cost-effective way for a semi-industrial manufacturing scale. Full article

Actuators and power electronics are fundamental components of modern control systems, enabling high-precision functionality, enhanced energy efficiency, and sophisticated automation. This study investigates evolving research trends and thematic developments in these areas spanning the last two decades (2005–2024). This study analyzed 1840 peer-reviewed abstracts obtained from the Web of Science database using BERTopic modeling, which integrates transformer-based sentence embeddings with UMAP for dimensionality reduction and HDBSCAN for clustering. The approach also employed class-based TF-IDF calculations, intertopic distance visualization, and hierarchical clustering to clarify topic structures. The analysis revealed a steady increase in research publications, with a marked surge post-2015. From 2005 to 2014, investigations were mainly focused on established areas including piezoelectric actuators, adaptive control, and hydraulic systems. In contrast, the 2015–2024 period saw broader diversification into new topics such as advanced materials, robotic mechanisms, resilient systems, and networked actuator control through communication protocols. The structural topic analysis indicated a shift from a unified to a more differentiated and specialized spectrum of research themes. This study offers a rigorous, data-driven outlook on the increasing complexity and diversity of actuator and power electronics research. The findings are pertinent for researchers, engineers, and policymakers aiming to advance state-of-the-art, sustainable industrial technologies. Full article

To overcome the limitations of single-objective optimization in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) performance enhancement, this study proposes an adaptive moving least squares (AMLS) for a 12-pole/36-slot built-in PMSM. Through comprehensive exploration of the design space, a systematic approach is established for holistic motor performance improvement. The Gaussian weight function is modified to improve the model’s fitting accuracy, and the decay rate of the control weight is optimized. The optimal adaptive meta-model for the built-in PMSM is selected based on the coefficient of determination. Subsequently, sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify the parameters that most significantly influence key performance indicators, including torque ripple, stator core loss, electromagnetic force amplitude, and average output torque. These parameters are then chosen as the optimal design variables. A multi-objective optimization framework, built upon the optimal adaptive meta-model, is developed to address the multi-objective optimization problem. The results demonstrate increased output torque, along with reductions in stator core loss, torque ripple, and radial electromagnetic force, thereby significantly improving the overall performance of the motor. Shaded-pole induction motors are the most frequently used single-phase electric motors in low power applications. Their main advantages are reliability, robustness, low level of noise and vibration, relatively simple manufacturing technology and cost effectiveness. These motors are the driving units of choice in the applications where the variable speed and high starting torque are not of utmost importance, in spite of the fact that they are characterized by inferior efficiency, power factor and starting torque compared to their single-phase counterparts. They are equipped with auxiliary massive copper coils at the stator side, which makes them self-starting, and strongly influence the motor characteristics. This study deals with the numerical modeling and analysis of a shaded-pole induction motor with a C-shaped stator frame. The analysis was performed using 2D finite element-based transient magnetic numerical modeling. The primary objective was to investigate the influence of the number and size of the auxiliary shaded coils on the output torque speed characteristic. We explored the possibility of reducing the amount of material used while preserving the crucial/nominal properties of the motor. Our results have important implications in manufacturing simplification, which may be important for the eco-design of small motors and actuators, including their recycling and/or reuse process. To improve the ability of line-commutated converters (LCCs) to resist commutation failure (CF) when a fault occurs on the AC side, a novel sub-module-based LCC topology actively resistant to CF is proposed in this paper. The control strategy and the parameters of the proposed sub-module are elaborately designed. The proposed LCC topology can actively resist CF by providing an auxiliary commutation voltage to the AC side, and the sub-module is conducive to the rapid recovery of the thyristor’s forward blocking ability. Additionally, the initial capacitor voltage of the sub-module is designed optimally based on the commutation mechanism. The proposed LCC system can effectively improve the ability to resist CF by increasing the commutation margin of the LCC system. Furthermore, the capacitors are charged and discharged during fault time, so the capacitor voltages do not drop too low and, thus, are better at resisting CF. Matlab/Simulink simulation results verify that the proposed LCC quickens the commutation process, promotes commutation performance, and enhances the immunity of LCCs to CF. Full article

This study presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) investigation of the hydrodynamic behavior of surface-textured lateral bushings in external gear pumps (EGPs), emphasizing the effects of combined sliding and squeezing motions within the lubrication gap. A comprehensive numerical model was developed to analyze how surface texturing implemented through different dimple shapes and texture densities influences pressure distribution and load-carrying capacity under transient lubrication conditions. The analysis demonstrates that the interaction between shear-driven flow and squeeze-film compression significantly amplifies pressure, particularly when optimal dimple configurations are applied. Results indicate that dimple geometry, depth, and arrangement critically influence hydrodynamic performance, while excessive texturing reduces effectiveness due to increased average gap height. Cavitation was intentionally not modeled in the early single dimple evaluations to allow clear comparison between configurations. The findings offer a design guideline for employing surface textures to enhance tribological performance and efficiency in EGP applications under realistic dynamic conditions. Full article

The permanent magnet electrodynamic suspension system (PMEDS) has demonstrated significant advantages in high-speed and ultra-high-speed applications due to its simple structure, low cost, and stable levitation force. However, the weak damping characteristic remains a critical issue limiting its practical implementation. This work investigates a passive damping plate utilizing the end field of onboard magnets, focusing on magnet-damping plate optimization and vehicle dynamics. Firstly, the configuration, operation principles, and electromagnetic parameters of the PMEDS vehicle are elucidated. Secondly, the dependences of magnet-conductive plate specifications on the damping force are examined. An optimization index based on the levitation-to-damping force ratio is proposed to enable collaborative optimization of magnet and conductive plate parameters. Finally, the vehicle dynamic model is developed using Simpack software to investigate payload and speed effects on dynamic responses under random track excitation, validating the effectiveness of the proposed passive damping solution. This study provides technical references for the design, engineering applications, and performance evaluation of passive damping schemes in PMEDS vehicles. Full article

This study presents a numerical investigation of the internal flow characteristics within the draft tube of a Kaplan turbine using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The distribution and evolution of vortical structures, particularly the formation and development of vortex ropes under various operating conditions, are systematically analyzed. The study aims to explore the effects of blade angle and guide vane opening on the internal flow characteristics of the unit, thereby providing guidance for flow control strategies. The influence of guide vane opening and turbine head on vortex dynamics and flow stability is examined, with a focus on the pressure pulsations induced by vortex ropes through frequency-domain analysis. The results indicate that increased guide vane openings and higher heads lead to the expansion and downstream extension of the vortex rope into the elbow section, causing significant low-frequency pressure pulsations and enhancing flow instability. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of unsteady flow behavior in Kaplan turbine draft tubes and provide a theoretical foundation for improving hydraulic stability and optimizing operational performance. This study introduces a flywheel rotor support structure for an active magnetic suspension flywheel energy storage system. In this structure, there is an axial offset between the axial-bearing position and the mass-center of the flywheel rotor, which affects the tilting rotation of the flywheel rotor and which causes the coupling between its tilting rotation and radial motion. Therefore, the influence of the bearing position on the vibration characteristics of the flywheel rotor is explored in this paper. The tilting rotation constraint of the flywheel rotor by axial active magnetic bearing (AAMB) is analyzed, and the radial active magnetic bearing (RAMB) is equivalently treated with dynamic stiffness and dynamic damping. Based on this, a dynamic model of the active magnetic suspension rigid flywheel rotor, considering the position parameter of the axial bearing, is established. To quantify the axial offset between the position of the AAMB and the mass-center of the flywheel rotor, the axial-bearing position offset ratio γ is defined. The variation trend of the vibration characteristics of flywheel rotor with γ is discussed, and its correctness is validated through experiments. It is indicated that, with the increase of γ, the second-order positive precession frequency of the flywheel rotor decreases obviously, and the influence of the gyroscope torque gradually weakens. Meanwhile, its second-order critical speed ω2c decreases significantly (when γ is 0.5, ω2c decreases by about 62%); ω2c corresponds to the inclined mode, revealing that the offset ratio γ has a prominent influence on the critical speed under this mode. In addition, as γ increases, the mass unbalance response amplitude of the flywheel rotor under the speed of ω2c decreases significantly. The reasonable design of the axial-bearing position parameter can effectively improve the operational stability of the active magnetic suspension flywheel energy storage system. Full article

Dog clutches are superior to synchromesh units due to much less wear caused by friction but require an external torque source to synchronize the rotation speeds. The current trend in e-mobility to use the driving motor of an electric vehicle as this source just creates another problem, which is known as torque holes. In this work, we propose a novel double-sided dog clutch that synchronizes the speeds electromagnetically by itself avoiding mechanical contact between the parts. A shift sleeve, two coils placed coaxially in their stators, and two complementary rings form an electromagnetic reluctance actuator, which is integrated inside the gearbox between two gearwheels and represents the double-sided clutch. Thus, intermediate parts between the shift sleeve and the actuator are not required. Both actuator sides can produce axial force and electromagnetic torque. However, torques and forces are generated simultaneously on both sides. Therefore, a special control algorithm is developed to keep the resulting axial force approximately equal to zero while the torque is generated in the neutral gear position. After the synchronization, the axial force is applied on the corresponding side to shift the required gear engaging the shift sleeve teeth directly with the slots of the complementary ring mounted on the gearwheel. So, an axial contact of the teeth at an unaligned state, which can lead to unsuccessful shifting, is avoided. A testrig, which includes a clutch prototype and a testing two-speed gearbox, has been designed and built. The developed theoretical ideas have been verified during the experiments under different conditions. The experiments confirm that the actuator can reduce positive and negative speed differences on both sides and subsequently shift the gear without a shift sleeve collision at misaligned angular positions. This paper proposes an A-shape hybrid levitation system combining high-temperature superconducting (HTS) maglev and permanent magnet levitation (PML) technologies to address the lateral instability of the PML system. By tilting the PM arrays and HTS bulks on both sides at a specific angle, the system’s cross-section forms an “A” shape. This configuration offers dual advantages: the A-shape PML significantly mitigates unstable lateral deflection forces while preserving levitation capacity, whereas the A-shape HTS maglev enhances guidance force. Through systematic analysis, the effects of the tilt angle and the magnetization direction of the PM arrays on levitation performance are investigated and optimized. The simulation results demonstrate that, at the lateral movement of 5 mm, for the PML system, a tilt angle of 45° reduces lateral deflection force by 94.4%, and synergistic optimization of the tilt angle of 40° and magnetization direction of 38° achieves an 84.6% reduction. The HTS maglev system enhances guidance force, with a 45.3% improvement at a 60° tilt angle and a 30° magnetization direction. This study presents a promising solution for developing a stable, high-load-capacity hybrid levitation system. Full article

Rotary drilling systems with PDC bits, commonly used for drilling deep wells in the production and exploration of oil and natural gas, frequently encounter severe vibrations. These vibrations can cause significant damage to the drilling system, particularly its downhole components, leading to drilling performance inefficiencies, notably reducing the rate of penetration and incurring high costs. This paper presents a parametric study on a proposed new axial semi-active tool designed to mitigate these unwanted vibrations. The tool, an axial absorber with tunable stiffness and damping coefficients over a wide range, composed of a hybrid magnetorheological elastomer-fluid (MRE-F), is installed above the PDC bit. In this study, the lumped parameter model considering axial and torsional vibrations is followed to assess the effectiveness of including the proposed absorber in the drill-string system’s behavior and to estimate the optimal coefficient values for achieving high-efficiency drilling. The drilling system response shown in this study indicates that, with optimal axial absorber coefficient values, the bit dynamically stabilizes, and unwanted vibrations are minimized, effectively eliminating the occurrence of bit-bounce and stick–slip, even when operating at critical frequencies. The proposed semi-active control tool has been proven to significantly reduce maintenance time, reduce the costs associated with severe vibrations, extend the lifespan of bottom-hole assembly components, and achieve smoother drilling with a simple addition to the drilling system. To effectively suppress spindle vibrations in rotating machinery, magnetorheological (MR) dampers, as an ideal vibration control device, have attracted attention. To enhance the vibration damping effect, in the paper, a MR damper vibration with a multi-layered permanent magnet as the magnetic source is designed, and the self-made magnetorheological fluid is used as the damping medium. The mechanical properties of the MR damper were obtained through testing and calculation. On this base, both simulation and experimental methods are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the multi-layered permanent-magnet MR damper. The simulation results show that the critical speed increases greatly for the first four modes. The experimental results show that the Y-direction displacement decreases greatly, especially at 1800 rpm and at 3400 rpm, after applying the MR damper. The vibration displacement at 1× frequency shows a 69.74% reduction at 2600 rpm and a 65.69% reduction at 3200 rpm in the Y-direction after applying the MR damper. The effectiveness of the multi-layered permanent magnet MR damper in rotor vibration suppression was confirmed. Full article

This paper presents a comparison of some different configurations of electro-hydrostatic actuators (EHA). The gear pump EHA has a simpler mechanical configuration, but the electronic power command circuits and the electric motor are in high demand due to the very frequent speed variations. The variable piston pump EHA has a more complicated mechanical configuration, but the electronic power command circuits and the main electric motor are less loaded due to the constant speed of the electric motor. The variable displacement pump control can be made either using an electric motor and mechanical transmission, or an additional hydraulic circuit, to modify the swash plate angle. In total, four EHA configurations are studied in this paper (one with a gear pump and three with variable axial piston pumps).
