Wild boars are recognized reservoirs of numerous viral pathogens, posing a significant risk to domestic pig populations, particularly in areas with poor biosecurity. This study assessed the prevalence and co-infection patterns of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), porcine parvovirus (PPV), porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV), African swine fever virus (ASFV), classical swine fever virus (CSFV), and pseudorabies virus (PRV) in wild boars from western Serbia and the Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Sixty-six spleen samples from legally hunted wild boars were analyzed by qPCR. All animals were negative for ASFV, CSFV, and PRV. The cumulative prevalence of infection with at least one of the other three viruses was 86.4% (95% CI: 76.2–92.8%). PCMV was detected in 74.2% of samples, PCV2 in 50%, and PPV in 28.8%. Co-infections were common: 42.4% of animals were positive for two viruses, and 12.1% for all three. A statistically significant association was observed between triple co-infection and sex, with higher rates in males. Subadult wild boars showed the highest PCV2 + PCMV co-infection rate (p = 0.0547). These findings highlight the need to expand molecular surveillance, particularly for PCMV, in both wild and domestic pigs, especially in regions reliant on low-biosecurity backyard farming. Bardoka and Karakachan sheep are primitive regional transboundary Pramenka-type sheep autochthonous to the Balkan Peninsula, whose populations have been reduced to a critically small size in Serbia. We genotyped 105 Bardoka animals (97 ewes and 8 rams from three flocks) and 97 Karakachan sheep (86 ewes and 11 rams from four flocks), along with 28 Ile-de-France (IDF) animals used for a comparison (25 ewes and 3 rams), using 14 nuclear microsatellites to assess their genetic status and establish a foundation for their genetically informed conservation. We utilized genetic data to assess inbreeding values of individuals (I) and pairwise relatedness (r) traditionally inferred from the pedigree data, which are incomplete in the studied autochthonous breeds. We used these data to assemble a data set of unrelated individuals for subsequent genetic analyses. Low but statistically significant genetic differentiation of Bardoka and Karakachan sheep (FST = 0.031, p < 0.01) demonstrates that these phenotypically distinct breeds differ at the genetic level as well. The I and r in ewes were higher in the Karakachan sheep (I = 0.09, r = 0.07) than in Bardoka (I = 0.06, r = 0.06). Contrary to the IDF rams, Bardoka and Karakachan sheep rams were genetically heterogeneous and those of the latter breed displayed higher average r values (0.01 vs. 0.08, respectively). Rams of both local breeds had identical I values of 0.02. Although Bardoka and Karakachan sheep still harbor rather high levels of genetic diversity (HE = 0.761 ± 0.028 and 0.761 ± 0.021, respectively), the overall genetic data demonstrate that the genetic consequences of the population decline were more severe in the latter breed. A genetic structure presenting a general trend of differentiation of flocks with low genetic exchange into separate genetic entities was observed, indicating the effects of genetic drift. The implementation of the genetically informed conservation, together with the ongoing efforts of the state to enlarge the Bardoka and Karakachan sheep populations, would increase the prospects for the long-term survival of both breeds in Serbia. Background: The Balkan Peninsula has served as an important migration corridor between Asia Minor and Europe throughout humankind’s history and a refugium during the Last Glacial Maximum. Past migrations such as the Neolithic expansion, Bronze Age migrations, and the settlement of Slavic tribes in the Early Middle Ages, are well known for their impact on shaping the genetic pool of contemporary Balkan populations. They have contributed to the high genetic diversity of the region, especially in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineages. Serbia, located in the heart of the Balkans, reflects this complex history in a broad spectrum of mtDNA subhaplogroups. Methods: To explore genetic diversity in Serbia and the wider Balkan region, we analyzed rare mtDNA subclades—R0a, N1a, N1b, I5, W, and X2—using publicly available data. Our dataset included already published sequences from 3499 HVS-I/HVS-II and 1426 complete mitogenomes belonging to West Eurasian and African populations, containing both contemporary and archaeological samples. We assessed the parameters of genetic diversity found in different subclades across the studied regions and constructed detailed phylogeographic trees and haplotype networks to determine phylogenetic relationships. Results: Our analyses revealed the observable geographic structure and identified novel mtDNA subclades, some of which may have originated in the Balkan Peninsula (e.g., R0a1a5, I5a1, W1c2, W3b2, and X2n). Conclusions: The geographic distribution of rare subclades often reveals patterns of past population movements, routes, and gene flows. By tracing the origin and diversity of these subclades, our study provided new insights into the impact of historical migrations on the maternal gene pool of Serbia and the wider Balkan region, contributing to our understanding of the complex genetic history of this important European crossroads. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in countermovement jump (CMJ) force–time metrics between male and female youth basketball players. Methods: Twenty-two female and seventeen male basketball players (ages 12–16) performed CMJs on a portable force plate system (VALD Performance). The data collected were analyzed for differences in force–time characteristics, specifically during the concentric and eccentric phases of the CMJ. Results: The results showed no statistically significant differences in anthropometric characteristics between the sexes. However, male athletes demonstrated better performance in several force–time metrics during the concentric phase of the CMJ, including concentric impulse, peak velocity, and mean power, ultimately leading to higher vertical jump heights. Sex-specific differences in the eccentric phase were less pronounced, though males exhibited greater relative eccentric mean power. Conclusions: The findings suggest that male players tend to display greater force and power-producing capabilities during the propulsive (concentric) phase of the CMJ. These differences highlight the importance of tailoring training programs to address specific needs, particularly focusing on enhancing concentric force and power production in female basketball players. The countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) is widely used in sports science and rehabilitation to assess lower body power. In controlled laboratory environments, a complex analysis of CMJ performance is usually carried out using motion capture or force plate systems, providing detailed insights into athlete’s movement mechanics. While these systems are highly accurate, they are often costly or limited to laboratory settings, making them impractical for widespread or field use. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of MMPose, a markerless 2D pose estimation framework, for CMJ analysis by comparing it with force plates. Twelve healthy participants performed five CMJs, with each jump trial simultaneously recorded using force plates and a smartphone camera. Vertical velocity profiles and key temporal variables, including jump phase durations, maximum jump height, vertical velocity, and take-off velocity, were analyzed and compared between the two systems. The statistical methods included a Bland–Altman analysis, correlation coefficients (r), and effect sizes, with consistency and systematic differences assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and paired samples t-tests. The results showed strong agreement (r = 0.992) between the markerless system and force plates, validating MMPose for CMJ analysis. The temporal variables also demonstrated high reliability (ICC > 0.9), with minimal systematic differences and negligible effect sizes for most variables. These findings suggest that the MMPose-based markerless system is a cost-effective and practical alternative for analyzing CMJ performance, particularly in field settings where force plates may be less accessible. This system holds potential for broader applications in sports performance and rehabilitation, enabling more scalable, data-driven movement assessments. Full article

This paper explores the replanning, reconstruction, and rebranding of Austro-Hungarian military buildings, encompassing common military administrative, healthcare, and housing facilities as well as railways that were under military jurisdiction, and their profound influence on the development of Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. These structures, originally built for military and logistic purposes during the Austro-Hungarian period (1878–1918), played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s urban and architectural landscape. The study employs historical analysis of archival documents, maps, and photographs, combined with contemporary field observations that assess the current state and adaptive reuse of these buildings. This approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of the buildings’ transformation over time, from symbols of military authority to cultural and social landmarks within the city. The key periods of transformation—between 1945–1991 and post-1995—were largely driven by changes in national politics, military ownership, and local urban development policies that promoted the urbanization of unused military zones. The findings reveal a dynamic process of adaptive reuse, wherein the rebranding of these historical edifices has repurposed them into cultural, educational, and public spaces. These adaptive transformations not only preserved the architectural integrity of the buildings but also revitalized their roles in the community. The study concludes that Banja Luka’s experience serves as a model for sustainable heritage management, demonstrating the balance between historical preservation and modern urban development. The results highlight how the city successfully merged its rich architectural past with contemporary needs, contributing to its cultural identity and urban growth. Full article

This study aims to evaluate the black bullhead Ameiurus melas, an invasive alien fish (IAF) in Serbia, as a bioindicator organism and assess the safety of natural and aquaculture specimens for human consumption. A set of biomarkers was analysed to assess the bioindicator potential at a site exposed to agricultural activities. The genotoxic response was determined by an alkaline comet assay and micronucleus assay in fish erythrocytes, and the metal pollution index (MPI) was calculated to assess the toxic element burden on fish. Water quality was evaluated using physicochemical parameters and faecal indicator bacteria, while sediment was analysed for the presence of pesticides. The concentration of metals and metalloids in fish muscle was monitored to assess the safety for human consumption, and the corresponding indices (MAC, THQ, HI) were calculated. All biomarker responses were linked by the integrated biomarker response (IBR). Water analyses indicated the absence of communal wastewater, while sediment analysis revealed the presence of paclobutrazol, bifenthrin, and cyfluthrin. The IBR showed that June and September had the highest stress indices, coinciding with peak pesticide use and precipitation. All indices confirmed the safety of black bullhead for human consumption. This study highlighted the uses of nature-based solutions to the problem of IAF. Full article

Background/Objectives: Improving the production rates of modern tablet presses places ever greater demands on the performance of excipients. Although co-processing has emerged as a promising solution, there is still a lack of directly compressible excipients for modified-release formulations. The aim of the present study was to address this issue by investigating the potential of novel co-processed excipients for the manufacture of modified-release tablets containing ibuprofen. Methods: The excipients were prepared by melt granulation of lactose monohydrate with glyceryl palmitostearate as a binder. The influence of glyceryl palmitostearate particle size, ibuprofen content, compression pressure, and compression speed on the compaction behavior of the tablet blends was analyzed. Results: Novel co-processed excipients ensured good flowability and acceptable mechanical properties of the tablets containing up to 70% ibuprofen. Furthermore, lipid-based co-processed excipients proved to be very promising for directly compressible formulations with high-dose, highly adhesive active pharmaceutical ingredients such as ibuprofen, as they do not require additional lubricants. The influence of compression speed on the tensile strength of the tablets prepared was not pronounced, indicating the robustness of these directly compressible excipients. The investigated lipid-based excipients enabled a prolonged release of ibuprofen over 10 h. Conclusions: The novel lipid-based co-processed excipients have shown great potential for directly compressible formulations with modified release of high-dose, challenging active pharmaceutical ingredients. This study aimed to validate the automated temporal analysis of countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) using MMPose, a markerless pose estimation framework, by comparing it with the gold-standard 3D marker-based motion capture system. Twelve participants performed five CMJ trials, which were simultaneously recorded using the marker-based system and two smartphone cameras capturing both sides of the body. Key kinematic points, including center of mass (CoM) and toe trajectories, were analyzed to determine jump phases and temporal variables. The agreement between methods was assessed using Bland–Altman analysis, root mean square error (RMSE), and Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r), while consistency was evaluated via intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 3,1) and two-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Cohen’s effect size (d) quantified the practical significance of differences. Results showed strong agreement (r > 0.98) with minimal bias and narrow limits of agreement for most variables. The markerless system slightly overestimated jump height and CoM vertical velocity, but ICC values (ICC > 0.91) confirmed strong reliability. Cohen’s d values were near zero, indicating trivial differences, and no variability due to recording side was observed. Overall, MMPose proved to be a reliable alternative for in-field CMJ analysis, supporting its broader application in sports and rehabilitation settings. Full article

Evaluation of pharmacokinetic properties is a significant step at the early stages of drug development. In this study, an in vitro evaluation of the pharmacokinetic properties of five newly synthesized compounds was performed. These compounds belong to N-hydroxyurea and hydroxamic acid derivatives and analogs of NSAIDs indomethacin, flurbiprofen, diclofenac, ibuprofen, and naproxen (compounds 1, 2, 3, 11, and 12, respectively) with dual COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitory activity. Two in vitro methods (biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) and PAMPA) were used to evaluate passive gastrointestinal absorption, while high-performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to evaluate binding to human serum albumin (HSA). The introduction of N-hydroxyurea and hydroxamic acid groups into the structure of NSAIDs decreases both expected passive gastrointestinal absorption (BMC k values were from 3.02 to 9.50, while for NSAIDs were from 5.29 to 13.36; PAMPA –logPe values were between 3.81 and 4.76, while for NSAIDs were ≤3.46) and HSA binding (HPAC logk values were from 2.03 to 9.54, while for NSAIDs were ≥11.03; DPV peak potential shifts were between 7 and 34, while for NSAIDs were ≥54). Structural modifications of all tested compounds that increase lipophilicity could be considered to enhance their passive gastrointestinal absorption. Considering lower expected HSA binding and higher lipophilicity of tested compounds compared to corresponding NSAIDs, it can be expected that the volume of distribution of compounds 1, 2, 3, 11, and 12 will be higher. Reduced HSA binding may also decrease interactions with other drugs in comparison to corresponding NSAIDs. All tested compounds showed significant microsomal instability (25.07–58.44% decrease in concentration) in comparison to indomethacin (14.47%) and diclofenac (20.99%). Full article

The main aim of this study was to analyze hygiene practices in small-scale dairy plants (SSDPs) in Serbia. A total of 60 plants were included in the research. A survey questionnaire used for SSDPs was designed to obtain the main information about hygiene practices they perform, as well as the data about the SSDPs, their production portfolio, and improvement plans. For the purpose of this study, a good hygiene practice score (GHPS) was calculated showing that the average score is 75%, spanning from 71.4% to 80.3% depending on the type of dairy plant. This study showed that the biggest challenges for small-scale dairy plants are associated with adequate labeling and external analysis of their dairy products, followed by record keeping and use of appropriate food contact materials. As expected, registered and approved SSDPs had higher GHPS scores and more information on their labels than those still in the approval or registration process. This study confirms the need for supporting this type of dairy producer to improve two main pillars of their business—the infrastructure for where they produce dairy products and awareness/knowledge of food safety legislative requirements. At the same time, approved processors are significantly underutilizing their processing capacity, which implies the need for both policy change consideration and educational initiatives. The policy changes should aim to align regulations with small-scale dairy processing realities. Full article

The aim of the study was to point out the importance of recognizing non-accidental injuries (NAI) and to highlight the importance of reporting such cases, as well as prosecuting the perpetrators, in order to detect potentially existing violence or prevent future violence in society. A total of 338 dogs and 54 cats were submitted for necropsy. Out of 338 dogs examined, 175 (51.8%) died due to non-natural cause of death, 122 from natural causes (36.1%), and 35 (10.3%) due to accidental injuries, and in 6 cases (1.8%) the cause and manner of death were undetermined due to advanced post-mortal changes. Out of 54 examined cats, 21 died due to non-natural causes (38.9%) and the same number of cats died due to natural causes. The prevalence of accidental injuries resulting in death were 20.4% (n = 11) and in 1.8% (n = 1) the manner of death remained indeterminate. The high number of animals confirmed to have died from unnatural causes in this study highlights the need for greater involvement from the police, prosecution, and society as a whole to reduce the number of violent animal deaths in the future. Exploring the Antibacterial Potential of Lamiaceae Plant Extracts: Inhibition of Bacterial Growth, Adhesion, Invasion, and Biofilm Formation and Degradation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1

In response to the global rise in antibiotic resistance and the prevalence of bacterial biofilm-related infections, the antibacterial efficacy of methanolic, ethanolic, and aqueous extracts of 18 Lamiaceae plants from Serbia was evaluated. The total coumarins and triterpenes were detected spectrophotometrically, while a microdilution assay measured their effects on bacterial growth. Additionally, the impact of these extracts was assessed on Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 adhesion and invasion in human fibroblasts and biofilm formation and degradation. The alcoholic extracts had the highest phytochemical content, with Teucrium montanum and Lavandula angustifolia being the richest in coumarins and triterpenes, respectively. Gram-positive bacteria, particularly Bacillus subtilis, were more susceptible to the extracts. Hyssopus officinalis ethanolic and Sideritis scardica methanolic extracts inhibited bacterial growth the most efficiently. Although the extracts did not inhibit bacterial adhesion, most ethanolic extracts significantly reduced bacterial invasion. Origanum vulgare and H. officinalis ethanolic extracts significantly inhibited biofilm formation, while Teucrium chamaedrys extract was the most active in biofilm degradation. This study significantly contributes to the literature by examining the antibacterial activity of Lamiaceae extracts, addressing major literature gaps, and underscoring their antibacterial potential, particularly Satureja montana and O. vulgare ethanolic extracts, linking their efficacy to coumarins and triterpenes. Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) infection is widespread worldwide and has a high prevalence in swine herds, especially in countries with intensive swine production. PCMV is zoonotic and can impact xenotransplants. It is the third swine virus known to be zoonotic, following swine influenza virus (influenza A) and hepatitis E virus genotype 3 (HEVgt3 or HEV-3). Wild boars, serving as reservoirs for various pathogens, including PCMV, pose a risk to both the pig industry and public health. This study aimed to investigate PCMV infection in Serbian wild boars using real-time PCR and assess other viral infections. We also tested samples for the presence of other viral infections: Aujeszky disease virus (ADV), Porcine parvovirus (PPV) and Porcine reproductive respiratory syndrome (PRRSV). Samples from 50 wild boars across 3 districts were tested. Results showed 8% positivity for PCMV DNA, with females showing higher infection rates. Porcine parvovirus (PPV) was detected in 56% of samples, while Porcine reproductive respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) was absent. ADV was found in 18% of samples, primarily in younger animals. This research contributes to understanding PCMV prevalence in Serbian wild boars and emphasizes the importance of monitoring viral infections in wild populations, considering the potential zoonotic and economic implications. The microbiological quality of dairy products from small-scale producers in Serbia was analysed. A total of 302 dairy products [raw (n = 111) and pasteurized milk cheeses (n = 79) and kajmak (n = 112)], were collected and tested for the presence of pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp., and enumerated for Coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS), Escherichia coli, and yeasts and moulds. None of the samples tested positive for Salmonella spp., while L. monocytogenes was recovered from one raw milk cheese and five kajmak samples. Raw milk cheese and kajmak also had higher levels of indicator microorganisms, namely E. coli and yeast and moulds. Molecular serotyping grouped L. monocytogenes isolates into serogroups 1 (1/2a and 3a) and 3 (1/2b, 3b, and 7). When exposed to eight antibiotics, L. monocytogenes isolates were mostly sensitive, with the exception of oxacillin and reduced susceptibility to clindamycin, penicillin G, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, emphasizing the importance of continuous surveillance for antimicrobial resistance. Samples that tested positive for Listeria spp. also had higher loads of indicator microorganisms, namely E. coli and yeast and moulds, suggesting lapses in hygiene practices during production. Collectively, these data emphasize the need for improved food safety and hygiene practices among small-scale dairy producers. This is crucial to reduce the microbial contamination and improve both the quality and safety of dairy products in the Serbian market. Full article
