Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Growing water scarcity, climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure on aquatic ecosystems highlight the urgent need for sustainable water management. Water recovery and reuse are therefore becoming essential strategies for reducing freshwater consumption, improving water security and supporting the transition towards a circular water economy. At the same time, increasingly stringent wastewater treatment requirements create a growing demand for advanced and reliable treatment technologies.

Membrane processes offer significant potential for water recovery due to their high separation efficiency, versatility and compatibility with integrated treatment systems. Technologies including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and membrane bioreactors can enable the production of water suitable for various applications, including industrial processes, energy production and urban water management.

Despite substantial progress, challenges such as membrane fouling, energy consumption, concentrate management, process stability and economic feasibility remain important barriers to wider implementation. Further research is needed to develop more efficient, sustainable and cost-effective membrane-based systems.

This Special Issue, entitled “Developments and Future Perspectives of Membrane Processes in Water Recovery Systems”, aims to present recent advances, innovative solutions and emerging research directions in membrane-based water recovery. Contributions addressing membrane materials and processes, hybrid systems, fouling mitigation, process optimization, resource recovery and sustainable applications of recovered water are particularly welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
