Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Iron-based materials remain foundational to modern water remediation, leveraging iron’s natural abundance and versatile redox chemistry. Ferrious ions and iron oxides have long activated peroxides (e.g., H2O2, persulfate) to generate reactive species for the oxidative degradation of organic pollutants, and recent advances in single-atom iron now boost these transformations with enhanced efficiency and selectivity. At the same time, zero-valent iron continues to power reductive pathways for in situ remediation of persistent contaminants, from chlorinated solvents and nitroaromatics to pharmaceuticals and heavy metals, in groundwater.

Here, we propose to publish a new Special Issue, entitled “The Application of Advanced Iron-Based Materials in Water Pollution Control”, in Water to highlight cutting-edge advances in iron-mediated water treatment. We focus on the design and synthesis of innovative iron-based catalysts and reductants, as well as novel homogeneous and heterogeneous treatment processes. Deep exploration of reaction mechanisms, pollutant degradation pathways, and structure–activity–selectivity relationships is encouraged, as these insights will guide the development of next-generation remediation systems.

Environmental applicability underpins this Special Issue, as bridging lab-scale research to real-world deployment remains a critical challenge. Accordingly, we especially welcome submissions demonstrating pilot-scale or field-scale applications of iron-based technologies and comprehensive feasibility analyses (life-cycle or techno-economic).

We invite original research articles, reviews, and short communications on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Mechanism reinvestigation of Fenton and Fenton-like processes.
  • Development of novel (photo-)electro-Fenton systems.
  • Advanced iron catalytic materials (including nano- and single-atom iron) for oxidative pollutant treatment.
  • Zero-valent-iron-based materials for reductive pollutant treatment.
  • Interactions of iron minerals with organics and metals.
  • Pilot-scale or field case studies of iron-based remediation technologies.

This Special Issue aims to inspire breakthroughs that translate lab-scale discoveries into sustainable solutions for water pollution control with iron. We look forward to your valuable contributions.
