Dear Colleagues,

Many drop structures are obstacles for multi-aquatic animals to migrate upstream and downstream. River degradation and local scouring below drop structure might also be caused by the flow passing over drop structures during flood stages. These problems might be caused by a lack of balance between flood control and preservation of the migration route in normal stages. Research on upstream and downstream migrations for aquatic animals through drop structures should be conducted by considering a balance between flood control and preservation of the migration route in normal stages. Most fish passages consist of a simple geometrical shape with concrete, and the migration route in the fish passage might be limited by a lack of various flows. In normal stages, the flow passing through the fish passage might not be oriented to swimming fish for upstream migration. Further, the function of the fish passage could be easily lost through the transportation of driftwood and rocks during flood stages. The flow condition in the fish passage should be created by the formation of various flows under a wide range of discharges. For example, the flow passing through stacked boulders enables the formation of various flows for the upstream migration in normal stages, and also the stacked boulders are stable during flood stages. From the point of hydraulic design of fish passage, the flow condition around drop structures should be investigated by considering the balance between flood control and preservation of the migration route in normal stages.
