Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The global escalation of water scarcity, coupled with the persistence of emerging contaminants (ECs), presents a critical challenge to traditional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Conventional treatments often fail to mineralize these recalcitrant organic molecules, necessitating the development of novel and effective Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). Among these, heterogeneous photocatalysis stands out as a sustainable and “green” technology. The importance of this research area lies in the transition toward solar-to-chemical conversion, reducing the carbon footprint of water purification while ensuring the elimination of pathogens and chemical toxins. This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for the latest breakthroughs in the design, synthesis, and application of high-efficiency photocatalytic systems, bridging the gap between effectiveness and sustainability. The scope of this issue is carefully curated to include: the development of novel photocatalytic systems capable of exploiting solar or visible radiation to enhance the degree of mineralization of persistent pollutants, mechanistic insights into the degradation pathways of specific persistent pollutants, treatment of real wastewater samples and complex matrices, evaluations regarding the sustainability and environmental impacts of technologies applied on laboratory scale or plant scale through Life Cycle Assessment, social and economic LCA.

We invite authors to submit original research articles and comprehensive reviews focusing on, but not limited to, the following themes: advanced materials, solar spectrum utilization, real-matrix treatment, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the design and application of photocatalysts in water treatment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
