Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Dairy cattle health and welfare are critical determinants of sustainable livestock production systems, influencing not only productivity and product quality but also regulatory frameworks. In the United States, the dairy industry has witnessed rapid advancements in health monitoring technologies, genomics, precision farming, and welfare assessment methodologies. These innovations have significantly enhanced our capacity to detect subclinical conditions, predict disease risk, and tailor management strategies to individual animals or herds.
Emerging research highlights the importance of early-life management, stress reduction, and environmental enrichment in improving lifetime performance and animal resilience. Moreover, the growing concern over antimicrobial resistance has spurred a global push toward alternative approaches, including improved vaccination programs, nutritional modulation, and the use of biomarkers for early diagnosis.
This Special Issue aims to showcase original research and comprehensive reviews that offer novel perspectives on dairy cattle health and welfare in the USA. We particularly welcome submissions addressing the following topics:
- Advances in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment;
- Precision livestock farming tools and sensor-based health monitoring;
- Animal behavior and welfare indicators;
- Impact of housing, feeding, and environmental conditions;
- Antimicrobial stewardship and alternatives to antibiotics;
- Genetic and epigenetic approaches to enhancing health traits;
- One Health perspectives linking dairy cattle health to broader ecological and public health concerns.
We hope this Special Issue will advance the scientific understanding and practical application of strategies to improve dairy cattle health and welfare in the USA. We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Veterinary Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
