Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Urban security is emerging as a core challenge and priority in the development of smart cities, and the convergence of innovative and sustainable technologies with the Internet of Things (IoT) has come to offer transformative opportunities to address complex safety concerns in both physical and digital urban environments. From resilient infrastructure and adaptive materials to predictive analytics and intelligent surveillance systems, today's urban safety strategies are increasingly grounded in integrated, data-driven, and technologically advanced solutions.

This Special Issue, entitled "Innovative and Sustainable Technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) for Smart City Security", aims to explore how interdisciplinary technological approaches can be harnessed to enhance safety, resilience, and adaptability in modern cities. Particular attention is paid to the role of advanced manufacturing techniques, robotics, and sustainable urban systems in shaping secure environments that are both efficient and environmentally responsible. Additionally, the deployment of IoT-based systems, such as sensor networks, real-time monitoring, and automated threat detection, presents new frameworks for risk mitigation and crisis response in complex urban contexts.

This Special Issue welcomes original research and review articles that address the interplay between security, innovation, and sustainability in the smart city domain. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Predictive risk analysis and urban safety technologies;
  • Smart infrastructure and resilient materials;
  • Sustainable design for critical systems protection;
  • IoT-based surveillance, monitoring, and early warning systems;
  • Cybersecurity in urban networks and public services;
  • Robotics and automation in emergency response;
  • Integrated approaches to physical and digital security;
  • The safe use of autonomous systems and vehicles;
  • Sustainable energy supply with renewable energy sources.

We invite contributions that advance both theoretical and practical understanding of how smart cities can be designed to ensure safety, sustainability, and technological integrity.

I look forward to receiving your submissions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Urban Science is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
