Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Cities, as complex adaptive systems, exhibit characteristics such as heterogeneity, interconnectivity, scaling properties, circular causality, and evolutionary dynamics. These traits are particularly evident in the realm of urban transportation: urban traffic issues are not merely a problem of infrastructure, but rather a complex manifestation of the interplay among multiple elements, including population mobility, behavioral decision-making, technological applications, and institutional environments. Against this backdrop, research on urban traffic control and innovative planning becomes critically important as it bears direct implications for sustainable urban development, residents' quality of life, and economic vitality.
This Special Issue, "Urban Traffic Control and Innovative Planning", aims to bring together the latest research from global scholars on urban transportation systems, explore the inherent dynamics of urban traffic as a complex system, and showcase how innovative planning and practices can address contemporary urban transportation challenges. The core themes of Urban Science include urban mobility, urban planning, land use, urban resilience, and sustainable urban development. Urban traffic control, the focus of this Special Issue, represents a critical convergence point of these core themes. We welcome contributions with focuses including, but not limited to, the following:
- Application of AI in Urban Traffic Control and Management;
- Integration of Low-Altitude Technology in Urban Traffic Management;
- Theories and Methods for Resilient Transportation Systems;
- Urban Transportation and Energy Systems Integration;
- Collaborative Planning for Urban Transportation and Public Health;
- Transportation Connectivity between Urban Fringes and Rural Areas;
- Planning for Multi-Dimensional Urban Transportation Networks;
- Integrated Land Use and Transportation Planning;
- Theories and Interventions for Travel Behaviour.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Urban Science is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
