Dear Colleagues,
Marine ecosystems are increasingly exposed to complex mixtures of industrial chemicals and microplastics originating from urban, agricultural, and industrial activities. This Special Issue, Toxic Effects of Marine Pollutants on Marine Organisms: Industrial Chemicals and Microplastics, aims to advance understanding of the biological, ecological, and molecular consequences of these contaminants across marine taxa and levels of biological organization. We invite contributions that examine the toxicity, bioavailability, uptake, accumulation, transformation, and trophic transfer of persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals and toxic elements, pharmaceuticals, endocrine-disrupting compounds, and other industrial chemicals, as well as microplastics and their associated chemical additives and adsorbed pollutants. Particular attention will be given to oxidative stress, genotoxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, immunotoxicity, reproductive and developmental effects, metabolic impairment, microbiome alterations, and changes in behaviour, growth, survival, and ecosystem functioning. Studies addressing combined and interactive effects, environmentally realistic exposure scenarios, species- and life-stage-specific sensitivity, and the influence of climate-related stressors are especially encouraged. The Special Issue also welcomes discussions of advances in analytical methods, biomarkers, ecotoxicological modeling, risk assessment, and strategies for pollution mitigation and environmental management. By integrating laboratory, field, and mechanistic research, this collection will contribute to a more comprehensive assessment of the risks posed by contemporary marine pollution.
