Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research in the rapidly evolving field of metamaterials. Metamaterials, which are artificially engineered materials with properties not found in nature, have revolutionized science and technology due to their unique and tunable optical, acoustic, mechanical, photonic, chiral, electromagnetic, and nonlinear characteristics. This Special Issue will focus on the design, fabrication, characterization, and simulation of metamaterials, with a particular emphasis on the role of symmetry in their structural and functional properties.
Symmetry plays a crucial role in determining the physical properties of metamaterials, influencing phenomena such as wave propagation, topological states, and resonance behaviors. Understanding and harnessing symmetry-related mechanisms can lead to the development of novel metamaterials with enhanced functionalities, such as tailored optical responses, chiral effects, and advanced mechanical properties. By highlighting the impact of symmetry on metamaterial design and performance, this Special Issue aims to foster innovative approaches and novel applications in this interdisciplinary field.
This Special Issue will uniquely accept both experimental and simulation-based studies, providing a comprehensive platform for researchers to showcase their work on the development and application of metamaterials. We invite contributions that explore the relationship between the symmetry of metamaterial structures and their functional behaviors.
Authors are encouraged to submit original research articles, reviews, and short communications that present new insights, tackle existing challenges, or propose novel approaches in the field. Our goal is to offer a platform for the exchange of knowledge and the advancement of metamaterial technology, fostering collaboration across disciplines and paving the way for future innovations. The articles should address (but are not limited to) the following topics:
- Negative Refractive Index Materials and Superlenses;
- Metasurfaces for Wavefront Shaping and Polarization Control;
- Symmetry-Breaking in Metamaterials;
- Acoustic Cloaking and Phononic Crystals;
- Auxetic and Programmable Mechanical Metamaterials;
- Photonic Crystals and Bandgap Engineering;
- Chiral Metamaterials for Polarization Control and Biomedical Sensing;
- Electromagnetic Metamaterials for Antenna Design and Shielding;
- Nonlinear Metamaterials for Frequency Conversion and Signal Processing;
- Design and Simulation of Metamaterials;
- Fabrication Techniques for Large-Scale and Tunable Metamaterials;
- Energy Absorption and Impact Resistance in Mechanical Metamaterials;
- Symmetry-Driven Bandgap Engineering in Acoustic and Photonic Metamaterials;
- Applications of Metamaterials in Real-World Scenarios;
- Experimental and Simulation Studies of Metamaterial Properties.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
