Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The purpose of this Special Issue is to explore the relationship between the use of bioactive compounds in functional food and healthy aging.

Plants are valuable sources of various bioactive compounds that exhibit a broad spectrum of health-promoting effects. Many studies have been focused on the chemical composition of with an eye to increasing their nutritional value.

Throughout the ages, humans have relied on nature for their basic needs, for the production of food additives, flavors, fragrances, medicines, supplements, cosmetics, and other substances. Nowadays, there are many innovative methods for evaluating the antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-fungi, and anti-diabetic activity of different secondary metabolites that have been extracted from various plants. The commercial importance of these secondary metabolites has resulted in great interest in their production and in exploring the possibilities of enhancing their production. A plethora of studies have demonstrated their protective role against oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, sarcopenia, cardiometabolic diseases and cancer. In other words, bioactive compounds have been demonstrated to have beneficial effects for consumers and can serve as an essential component of daily diet in order to promote healthy aging.

Phyto-compounds are known to play a major role in the adaptation of plants to their environment, but they also represent an important source of pharmaceuticals. The use of plants and their extracts for the preparation of herbal drugs provided the foundation of modern therapeutic sciences and thus enabled man to establish the empirical system of medicine. Moreover, medicinal plants are defined as any plant that has compounds that can be used for therapeutic purposes or contains the precursors of chemo-pharmaceutical synthesis.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
