Operation and Control of Sustainable Power and Renewable Energy Systems

This special issue belongs to the section “Energy Sustainability“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to serve as the guest editor of a Special Issue of Sustainability entitled "Operation and Control of Sustainable Power and Renewable Energy Systems." To clarify its academic positioning, we outline the focus, scope, and purpose below:

(1) Outline of the Special Issue

  1. Focus. This Special Issue centers on the Operation and Control of Sustainable Power and Renewable Energy Systems, addressing advanced control strategies, system optimization, stability analysis, smart grid integration, energy storage management, and key technical challenges in integrating high-penetration renewable energy.
  2. Scope. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Integration and dispatch of renewable energy (wind, solar, hydro, biomass, etc.).
  • Applications of AI and large language models in renewable energy systems.
  • Power system operation optimization and real-time control.
  • Operation and control of distributed energy resources.
  • Sustainable energy market policies on system operation.
  • Resilience of power systems under extreme climate conditions.
  • Purpose. This Special Issue aims to compile cutting-edge research from global scholars and engineers, advance technological innovation and theoretical development in the operation and control of sustainable power systems, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and support the safe, stable, and cost-effective operation of power systems with high renewable energy penetration.
  • (2) Supplement to the Existing Journal

While Sustainability has long focused on environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainable development, systematic exploration of the technical core—"power system operation and control"—remains relatively limited. This Special Issue will deepen the journal’s coverage in energy engineering and system control, filling gaps in real-time operation and intelligent control of renewable energy systems. It will offer readers a comprehensive perspective ranging from technological implementation to system management. This will enhance the journal’s academic influence and practical relevance in the field of sustainable energy.

    Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
