Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, entitled “Lithium-Ion Batteries and Their Role in Achieving Sustainable Energy Goals,” aims to critically examine the dual role of Li-ion battery technology as both a cornerstone of the clean energy transition and a source of new sustainability challenges.
(a) Focus: The issue will focus on the intersection of Li-ion battery innovation and comprehensive sustainability metrics, moving beyond pure performance to include environmental and socio-economic impacts.
(b) Scope: We invite research spanning the entire battery lifecycle—from ethical raw material sourcing and green manufacturing to second-life applications and advanced recycling—alongside analyses of policy frameworks, circular economy models, and lifecycle assessments.
(c) Purpose: The purpose of this Special Issue is to synthesize a holistic view, providing actionable insights for developing Li-ion batteries that are not only technologically superior but also truly sustainable.
This collection seeks to significantly supplement the existing literature, which often treats technical advancement and sustainability analysis in isolation. By integrating multidisciplinary perspectives from materials science, industrial ecology, and policy studies, this Special Issue will offer a unified framework that addresses the critical gap between rapid technological deployment and the imperative of sustainable stewardship. Ultimately, it will contribute to the journal's mission by quantifying sustainability trade-offs, evaluating policy tools, and promoting integrated approaches essential for aligning battery technology with the broader goals of sustainable development.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
