Sustainable Development Within Planetary Boundaries: Innovations in Circular Bioeconomy Systems

This Special Issue investigates the sustainable development of the circular bioeconomy, focusing on integrated strategies, policies, technologies, and business models that promote regenerative and resource-efficient systems. The circular bioeconomy combines the principles of circular economy and bio-based innovation to foster a transition from fossil-based and linear production systems to renewable, low-carbon, and waste-minimizing alternatives.

The scope of this Special Issue encompasses interdisciplinary contributions from environmental sciences, industrial ecology, engineering, economics, and policy studies. We welcome theoretical, empirical, and case-based research that addresses life-cycle thinking, bio-based value chains, sustainable resource management, and ESG integration in bioeconomy contexts.

The purpose is to critically explore how circular bioeconomy initiatives contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how they can support global efforts to remain within the Earth’s planetary boundaries by reducing pressures on climate, biodiversity, freshwater systems, and land use.

This Special Issue aims to complement the existing literature by offering novel insights into practical implementation, including metrics, regulatory frameworks, technological enablers, and socio-economic impacts. We invite the submission of research articles, reviews, communications, and concept papers pertaining to topics relevant to the Special Issue to share with our readers and the broader sustainability research community.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
