Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In the field of transportation sciences, significant emphasis is placed on transportation infrastructure itself. Its utilization, efficiency, and control over traffic flow can be enhanced through the implementation of technological devices and advanced systems, commonly known as transport telematics or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). One of the key aspects of leveraging transportation infrastructure and shaping its future development is traffic flow modeling, autonomous operations, and their impact on the environment. The comprehensive application of mobility extends beyond major transportation structures, such as tunnels and bridges, to complex urban layouts in historic city centers, where it is crucial to prioritize quality of life, emission reduction, and other essential environmental factors affecting transportation.
Given the complexity of integrating environmental approaches into traffic management, traffic operations, and autonomous systems within traffic flow, a broad range of technological equipment and implemented systems must be considered. These include traffic control systems, variable traffic signs, lighting, positioning methods, traffic and incident detection, energy consumption, and behavioral patterns within traffic flows. Discussions on this topic span ethical, legal, and technical aspects, focusing on safety applications, reliability, and modeling aimed at reducing emissions while promoting new forms of sustainable transportation and environmental approaches in urban areas.
Intelligent Transportation Systems also require significant operational and maintenance costs, which are just as important as the development of new systems. Therefore, this Special Issue welcomes research studies, experimental investigations, test results, and innovative approaches in the field of sustainable transportation from an environmental perspective.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
