Dear Colleagues,
Cities worldwide are experiencing a profound transformation in the way people move: while this transition towards greener, healthier, and more efficient transport offers opportunities to improve quality of life, it also creates challenges for ensuring safe, equitable, and inclusive mobility. According to the European Union, 40 % of all road fatalities occur in urban areas, with most victims being vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, powered two-wheelers, and older adults. These figures highlight the need to place road safety at the core of sustainable urban mobility. Though emerging mobility solutions reduce environmental impacts, they introduce new safety challenges, requiring the adoption of Sustainable Safety principles that anticipate human error and minimize fatalities and serious injuries. Particular attention should be paid to underrepresented road users, whose needs and risk exposure remain insufficiently addressed.
This Special Issue welcomes contributions on safer and more inclusive urban mobility, including the implementation of Sustainable Safety and Safe System principles; road safety assessment and management; micromobility safety; human-centered street design; data-driven safety analysis; human factors; vulnerable and underrepresented road users; connected and automated mobility; and the integration of road safety into sustainable urban mobility planning. We encourage innovative and interdisciplinary research supporting cities where sustainability, safety, inclusiveness, and accessibility are mutually reinforcing.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Sustainable Safety approach for urban environments;
- Innovative methods for road safety assessment and management;
- Micromobility safety;
- Inclusive and safe street design;
- Data-driven safety analysis;
- Human factors in road safety;
- Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, PTW) and underrepresented road users (older adults, children, people with disabilities);
- Emerging technologies and systems (e.g., ADAS, ITS, C-ITS, etc.);
- Integration of safety within sustainable urban mobility planning.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
