Hydrogen: Transition to a Sustainable Energy Future

Dear Colleagues,

Applications of hydrogen energy technologies are playing a major role in the transition to sustainable energy systems. By storing and transporting renewable energy from wind, solar, and other renewable sources, hydrogen energy creates a more flexible, less vulnerable, distributed energy system. However, a new collaborative approach is needed to address the challenges of sustainability in the context of the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus, particularly if we seek to bridge science with public policymaking demands. For example, the Sustainable Energy for All initiative seeks to “go further, faster together” towards achieving sustainable development goals worldwide. Innovative hydrogen energy applications can play a critical role in addressing the nexus of the water, energy, and food by improving efficiency, productivity, and sustainability. For example, one nexus approach could integrate renewable energy for the production of electricity, heat, and hydrogen by integrating water desalination and wastewater treatment for reuse in agriculture.

This Special Issue focuses on hydrogen energy applications, with a particular focus on the WEF nexus for sustainability.

This Special Issue includes, but is not limited, to the following topics:

• Hydrogen energy applications in agriculture;
• Hydrogen energy applications in buildings;
• Hydrogen energy applications in energy storage;
• Hydrogen energy applications in fuel cells;

• Hydrogen energy applications in microgrid systems;
• Hydrogen energy application in power plants;
• Hydrogen energy applications in renewable energy;
• Hydrogen energy applications in transportation;
• Renewable hydrogen systems for the nexus of water–energy–food.
