Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue “SDG 6: Challenges and Solutions for Drinking Water Quality” focuses on key issues related to drinking water quality, including challenges and modern solutions for monitoring, purification, and distribution.
This Special Issue covers a wide range of topics, including the analysis of the physicochemical composition of water, with particular emphasis on the presence of heavy metals, organic compounds, microplastics, and effective strategies for their reduction. Another important research area is the biological stability of water, including microbiological hazards, biofilm growth, and the presence of pathogens posing a risk to consumer health. This Special Issue will also present modern technologies for improving water quality, innovative purification methods, and monitoring water parameters in distribution systems. Particular attention will also be paid to infrastructure challenges, such as the aging of water networks and its impact on the stability and security of water supplies. This Special Issue promotes an interdisciplinary approach, combining scientific research results, innovative engineering solutions, and the analysis of water quality management policies. We invite researchers to contribute original research and critical reviews on new research methods, technologies, and strategies for ensuring safe and high-quality drinking water.
We invite work on topics related (but not limited) to the following:
- Secondary pollution of treated water;
- Assessment of emerging contaminants in drinking water and their potential health risks;
- Innovative approaches to ensuring microbiological safety and preventing biofilm formation in water systems;
- Advances in water treatment technologies and sustainable purification methods;
- Water quality in the context of sustainable development and circular economies.
We are pleased to invite you to our Special Issue "SDG 6: Challenges and Solutions for Drinking Water Quality", and we look forward to reading your work.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
