Dear Colleagues,
The Passivhaus (PH) standard has proven to be an effective approach for improving the energy efficiency (EE) of buildings and reducing environmental impacts (EIs) throughout their entire life cycle (LCA). Research has shown that strict adherence to the parameters specified for Central Europe is not required in various climate zones. Less stringent requirements for parameters such as air infiltration through the building envelope, U-values, and heat recovery efficiency can still yield more than satisfactory results in terms of EE and EIs, while significantly reducing construction and maintenance costs. Furthermore, market realities indicate that the high cost of construction prevent most of the population from accessing PH housing. Industrialized construction could substantially reduce construction, maintenance, and reuse costs, thereby facilitating access to PH or similar housing for a larger proportion of the population. Trials are already underway in apartment buildings built to the PH standard using easily assembled, industrialized modular systems. Furthermore, the prefabrication of toilets, bathrooms, kitchens, and other building components could lead to significant cost reductions, allowing for higher-quality building envelopes, IAQ control systems, and heat recovery units, thus facilitating compliance with PH parameters. Ultimately, new industrialized construction strategies are needed to improve energy efficiency, IAQ, and reduce EIs.
