Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable development and decarbonization are key challenges in contemporary tourism. The intersection of two areas—tourism and health buildings—reveals a specialized yet broad scope. In the context of the challenges related to carbon neutrality and the sustainable development of tourist regions, particularly regarding tourism buildings and tourist facilities, it is crucial to ensure good air quality in tourism and health buildings, improve energy efficiency, and design low-energy buildings in accordance with contemporary strategies. This goal stems from the current and gradually implemented requirements and regulations. We encourage authors to address the challenges of reducing energy consumption and sustainable development in tourist areas and related facilities.

Tourists, SPA, and health building facilities pose a challenge in the process of reducing energy consumption and achieving decarbonization and sustainable development. This process requires the involvement of numerous specialists in technical, medical, legal, and management fields. Not only are thermal modernization and the use of unconventional energy sources required, but also energy management systems, water and wastewater management techniques, ventilation, emission monitoring, and resource optimization—all integrated into a smart, low-emission facility model. We encourage authors to explore the challenges related to carbon neutrality and sustainable development in tourist regions, particularly regarding building and tourist facilities and supporting infrastructure.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews covering topics including (but not limited to)

  • The identification of challenges and barriers to decarbonization in the tourism sector;
  • Energy management strategies in buildings;
  • The presentation of practices and strategies supporting decarbonization in the infrastructure of tourist, sports, and health-related buildings;
  • An assessment of the impact of climate policy and sustainable development regulations on the operation of tourism buildings;
  • The promotion of low-emission and ecological models;
  • Proposals for sustainable models and solutions that integrate environmental, social, and economic aspects.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
