Research Process Innovations and Practices in Sustainable Air Quality Monitoring

In recent years, the importance of environmental management and sustainable development has become more evident than ever. The intersection of these two fields offers not only a comprehensive framework for understanding the environmental crises we face, but also concrete pathways to address them. Air quality is a key pillar. The international community must move beyond mere commitments of principle and translate ambitious environmental and climate goals into practical, measurable solutions tailored to local realities. The urgency of this transformation is underscored by the ever-worsening challenges to sustainable development—climate change, resource depletion, pollution, and social inequalities—which threaten the resilience of our ecological, economic, and social systems.

While the fundamental concepts of sustainable development are well established, it remains essential to explore and refine the strategies, governance structures, and technological innovations capable of driving significant change, particularly with regard to air quality. Research in these areas must focus on designing and implementing effective environmental management practices, exploring new models of sustainable development for businesses and cities, and assessing the concrete impacts of policies and initiatives. Without robust frameworks and evidence-based approaches, even the best intentions may fail to reach their full potential, leaving communities and industries ill-prepared to meet increasing sustainability pressures.

This Special Issue, “Research Process Innovations and Practices in Sustainable Air Quality Monitoring,” invites submissions that bridge the gap between theory and practice. We are seeking original research, systematic reviews, and case studies that illustrate how theoretical environmental models can be translated into concrete management strategies, thereby strengthening resilience and fostering the Triple Bottom Line: environmental integrity, social equity, and economic viability. We encourage submissions on a wide range of topics, including the following:

• Sustainable resource use with a direct impact on air quality and the transition to a circular economy;
• Climate change adaptation strategies and best practices in air quality management;
• Strategic approaches to environmental management and sustainability based on air quality;
• Integrating ESG (environmental, social, and governance) criteria into air quality management systems;
• Environmental innovation and the role of digital technologies in improving air quality in the context of the digital economy;
• Sustainable energy management and the integration of renewable energies with a direct impact on air quality;
• Strategies for pollution prevention, control, and mitigation;
• Understanding the synergies and trade-offs necessary to achieve the Triple Bottom Line objectives.

By sharing evidence-based research and innovative ideas, this Special Issue aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and inspire practical solutions for responsible and sustainable environmental management of air quality across various sectors. We look forward to your valuable contributions, which will shape the future of environmental management and help build resilient and sustainable communities for future generations.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
