Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, entitled “Building Resilience and Sustainable Societies: The Intersection of Digital Technologies, Cyber Resilience, and Sustainable Development”, aims to explore the pivotal role digital technologies play in driving both resilience and sustainability within societal transformation processes. As societies undergo digital transformation, digital technologies serve as fundamental enablers, facilitating innovative solutions to address evolving challenges such as cybersecurity threats, digital disruptions, and sustainability concerns. In this context, resilience and sustainability emerge as two equally important objectives to be prioritized throughout the transformation journey.

We invite contributions that investigate various aspects of leveraging digital technologies to build resilient and sustainable societies. The topics of interest to be covered include cyber resilience frameworks, strategies for enhancing cyber resilience, and the adoption and integration of digital technologies that enable sustainability across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) domains. Furthermore, we welcome studies on innovative approaches to cyber resilience tailored to small and medium-sized companies, as well as case studies showcasing successful implementation of cyber resilience strategies in diverse socioeconomic contexts. Academic researchers and industry practitioners are invited to submit original research papers and systematic mapping and review papers on relevant topics, including:

  • Digital transformation for sustainability;
  • Sustainable IT adoption;
  • Sustainable IT infrastructures and services;
  • Sustainable IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS;
  • Enabling technology for the circular economy (CE);
  • Enabling technology for sustainable development (AI/ML, data visualization, business analytics, IoT, and blockchain);

In an increasingly interconnected world, businesses may face the challenge of managing crises, whether they are economic downturns, natural disasters, or global pandemics. During such times, building strong and sustainable marketing resilience becomes crucial for businesses aiming to survive and thrive. Digital technologies—particularly social media platforms and artificial intelligence (AI)—can play a vital role in enhancing marketing resilience. This research seeks to answer the core question: “How can social media and AI technologies help businesses build marketing resilience during crises”? Drawing from a literature review, this study analyzes a wide range of relevant research. The findings indicate that AI and social media together contribute to enhancing marketing resilience during crises by enabling real-time engagement, data-driven decision-making, and personalized communication. However, these technologies also present challenges, such as privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, and potential risks to brand reputation. This research contributes to the field by analyzing how AI and social media technologies enable companies to remain agile, reduce the impact of crises, and maintain sustainability objectives in their marketing practices. The increasing reliance on information and communication technologies (ICTs), particularly the Internet, in digital marketing systems has made them prime targets for cyberattacks. The fact that, without adequate cybersecurity measures, digital marketing systems may face serious cyber threats, such as data breaches, financial fraud, and reputational damage, highlights the importance of enhancing cyber resilience in digital marketing operations to ensure long-term sustainability. This research sought to answer the following pivotal question: “How can cyber resilience enhance sustainability in marketing operations?” To address this issue, a comprehensive literature review was conducted and relevant articles were selected for a narrative review. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating cyber resilience strategies into marketing practices, particularly in terms of protecting data, ensuring operational continuity, and fostering customer trust. This research contributes to the field by exploring the intersection between cyber resilience and sustainable marketing practices, offering insights that provide practical advantages to marketers, businesses, and policymakers.
