Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), including micro-enterprises, face unprecedented disruptions from pandemics, economic volatility, geopolitical tensions, and extreme weather events. These challenges underscore the importance of resilience and sustainability for long-term business performance. This Special Issue seeks to explore how digital transformation enables SMEs to develop adaptive capabilities while addressing environmental, social, and economic sustainability objectives. We welcome contributions examining resilience at multiple levels: (1) the individual level, where leadership cognition and decision-making shape responses to crises; (2) the organizational level, where digital capabilities, culture, and sustainable practices drive adaptability; and (2) the inter-organizational level, where value chain collaborations and digital platforms enhance SME resilience. Studies investigating the interplay between these levels and the role of digital technologies, including AI, IoT, cloud computing, and data-driven experimentation, are particularly encouraged. This Special Issue advances the existing literature by offering an integrated perspective on how digital transformation, resilience, and sustainability interact in the SMEs context, highlighting mechanisms through which digital technologies enable sustainable and adaptive business models. It aims to provide actionable insights for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to support future-proof, sustainable SME growth.
