Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Water footprint assessment became a recognized research field following its introduction in 2002, with the grey water footprint (GWF) subsequently incorporated into the water footprint methodology. Unlike the blue and green water footprints, the grey water footprint involves qualitative assessment, which brings some methodological challenges. This Special Issue is open to articles that develop the grey water footprint methodology and present innovative applications and approaches to the GWF.

We particularly welcome articles addressing the following:

  • Issues related to pollutants determining the grey water footprint;
  • Assessment of the grey water footprint of mixtures of pollutants;
  • Approaches for determining maximum and natural concentrations used in grey water footprint calculations;
  • The role of self-purification and other natural attenuation processes in sustainability assessment.

We also welcome systematic reviews and meta-analyses focused on the grey water footprint, water footprint studies utilizing large-scale datasets, and grey water footprint studies covering a broad spectrum of diverse pollutants. Applications may be geographically defined (from local river basins to global scales) or focused on specific products, sectors, or companies.

This Special Issue aims to discuss various aspects of the grey water footprint and approaches to its determination. An analysis of the impact of the grey water footprint on sustainability assessment should be an integral part of every submission, particularly concerning environmental sustainability. Articles focusing on the application of the grey water footprint in the context of techno-economic or social sustainability in large river basins or administrative regions are also welcome.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
