Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of Sustainability is focused on Food Land Belts (FLB) related to different cities in different countries. FLBs and related projects (names have varied in different territories and countries) have emerged increasingly. They are particularly interesting and important today because of the emphasis placed on sustainable food produce. At the base of most FLBs are many smaller scale food projects linking consumers, farmers and social organizations as well as other actors, while the actual FLBs have often been put in place through governance processes often many years after various food projects have been put in place. Furthermore, several countries have been able to put in place a real Territorial Food Policy and others are working on this right now, e.g., IPES-Food in Europe. In this Special Issue a variety of FLBs and their territorial bases are discussed—e.g. how they have been established, what makes for their success, as well as for the success of the different food projects, what pitfalls have caused problems in the management and maintenance of some FLBs, what have been the roles of different levels of government, and what have been the roles of citizens, farmers, how are the linkages managed between agri-food producers and consumers, what are the other functions supported by FLBs that contribute to mobilizing support for the FLBs, e.g., what does a FLB contribute to environmental sustainability.
