Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Production systems and environmental pressures increasingly contribute to climate change, limitations on the availability of resources, and the degradation of environmental quality. The increasing generation of by-products by the agricultural and food industries has driven both producers and researchers to seek innovative valorization approaches that support ecological, economic, and environmental sustainability. Circular economy approaches and bio-waste valorization have been recognized as key strategies for reducing environmental burdens through the more efficient use of resources. Bio-waste valorization enables the transformation of industrial by-products into valuable raw materials rich in bioactive compounds while simultaneously reducing waste generation. However, the successful implementation of these solutions does not depend solely on technological and analytical aspects, but also on consumers’ acceptance, willingness to adopt circular economy models, and perceptions of the safety and benefits of such products. The role of local communities is also crucial in encouraging producers to develop circular economy processes, strengthening trust, and promoting sustainable consumer decisions.

This Special Issue will explore sustainable approaches connecting environmental quality, circular economy, and bio-waste valorization, including consumer acceptance and trust, as well as the role of local communities. We invite researchers to submit their latest research, new ideas in the field of sustainability, and systematic reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
