Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue investigates the transformative role of IoT-based smart networks in revolutionizing industrial and manufacturing management, emphasizing the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as industrial big data analytics, 5G connectivity, generative AI, edge computing, and digital twins. The focus is on leveraging these advancements to enhance operational efficiency, sustainability, and adaptive decision-making in Industry 5.0 ecosystems. We welcome theoretical and applied research on real-time monitoring (enabled by 5G’s low-latency communication), predictive maintenance driven by industrial big data, generative AI for intelligent automation and design optimization, and resilient cyber–physical production systems. The purpose is to address emerging challenges, including managing large-scale datasets, as well as ensuring secure and scalable IoT architectures and ethical AI deployment, while showcasing IoT’s role in enabling agile, self-optimizing smart factories. By contextualizing IoT within the broader framework of Industry 5.0, this collection complements the existing literature by exploring the synergy between IoT, 5G, and generative AI—an underexplored nexus in current smart manufacturing research. It advances prior studies by offering novel insights into data-driven automation, cross-domain interoperability, and human-centric AI collaboration, thereby bridging gaps in scalability, sustainability, and innovation for next-generation industrial systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
