Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The "perfect storm" of climate change has significant impacts on many aspects of life and nature. Climate changes are long-lasting differences and changes in the temperature and weather, which represent a significant risk in today’s society. Most of these changes are caused by human activity and the fast development of industry.  The sensitivity of societies to the simultaneous impacts of climate change on agriculture has been analyzed on a global scale. Climate change can alter the conditions that sustain food production and availability, with cascading consequences for food security and global economies. Changes in the climate are a prelude to the occurrence of many disasters and extreme changes in the atmosphere.

Disasters can be natural or human-made; nevertheless, they are catastrophic events with atmospheric, geological, and hydrological origins that can cause fatalities, property damage, and social and environmental disruption.

Improved disaster risk management and resilience are essential for sustainable societies. However, the science of natural hazards is too fragmented to influence policy effectively.

Therefore, we propose a Special Issue in Sustainability entitled "A Perfect Storm: Natural Disasters and Climate Change". This Special Issue seeks to cover the impact of climate change and natural disasters on society and food production, including natural processes, such as floods, heat waves, earthquakes, or landslides, and also to consider their impacts on natural and human dimensions, including societal and economic processes, such as economic vulnerability and socially sustainable development.

Current climate scenarios require the implementation of adaptive actions to achieve resilient environments and societies that can withstand and recover from the impacts of extreme events.

The goal is to show that adaptive solutions must be integrated with disaster risk management, spatial and urban planning, adaptive management, and climate change policies.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following subjects related to green buildings:

  • Climate change;
  • Urban climate;
  • Adaptation;
  • Vulnerability;
  • Resilience;
  • Disaster risk reduction;
  • Extreme events;
  • Natural risks;
  • Food security;
  • Fisheries;
  • Agricultural economics;
  • Environmental economics;
  • Climate-smart agribusiness.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
