Dear Colleagues,
The textile industry is a major contributor to environmental degradation due to its intensive use of resources and reliance on synthetic, petroleum-based materials. Conventional textile manufacturing consumes large quantities of water, energy, and chemicals, leading to significant emissions and pollution. In particular, synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon are key sources of microplastic pollution, as they release microscopic particles during washing and use. These microplastics accumulate in aquatic ecosystems and enter the food chain, posing long-term environmental and health risks.
In response to these challenges, bio-based polymers have emerged as promising alternatives for more sustainable textile production. Derived from renewable resources, these materials offer the potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon footprints, and improve end-of-life options. This Special Issue focuses on the development and application of bio-based polymers across textile manufacturing, including fiber formation, finishing, coating, and functionalization.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following: manuscripts on material innovation, performance, durability, and scalability are particularly encouraged. By advancing knowledge in this field, the Special Issue will support the transition toward environmentally responsible and resource-efficient textile systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
