Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to announce a new Special Issue, Quality and Sustainability: The Way to Improvement.

This Special Issue aims to present fundamental and applied research focusing on the relationship between quality and sustainability, specifically on how these two organizational dimensions can promote performance improvements in organizations in a sustainable manner. Papers should further understanding of the interconnections between quality management and sustainable development, and their impact on industries, societies, and the environment.

Sustainability and quality are deeply interconnected, mutually reinforcing one another. Quality enhances processes, minimizes inefficiencies, reduces costs, and improves overall organizational performance. At the same time, sustainable practices elevate quality by reducing environmental impacts, promoting eco-efficiency, and fostering ethical work practices. Together, they create pathways for high performance while ensuring environmental and social responsibility, ultimately contributing to the wellbeing of society.

The integration of quality systems with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting initiatives remains largely unexplored, as most studies address them separately. The study of their intersection and crossover points thus presents a promising research opportunity, not only for advancing scientific knowledge but also creating value for organizations.

We invite researchers and practitioners to submit contributions focusing on case studies, theory development and fundamental research.  The use of well-recognized methodologies, such as life-cycle analysis or material flow analysis, will be considered. However, alternative approaches that enable a systemic mapping of impacts and explore the intrinsic relationship between quality and sustainability as fundamental drivers for organizational improvement and competitive advantage are strongly welcomed.

Topics of Interest

We invite original research articles and critical reviews on topics related (but not limited) to the following:

  • Quality and sustainability relationship and synergies;
  • Quality and sustainability improvement projects;
  • Circular economy and material analysis;
  • Environmental impact assessment in quality management;
  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and reporting;
  • Quality and sustainability metrics;
  • Sustainable supply chains;
  • Quality and sustainability value creation.
