Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on the intersection of digital education, mobile learning, and sustainability, with three core aims: (a) to examine how AI‑driven educational technologies can support equitable and low‑carbon learning; (b) to develop analytics and measurement tools for assessing sustainability outcomes; and (c) to propose policies and design principles for sustainable AI‑powered education.

The scope includes adaptive learning systems, mobile interventions for sustainability competencies, energy‑efficient learning analytics, and governance frameworks that align digital education with the UN SDGs.

The existing literature on AI in education has largely emphasised pedagogical efficiency and learner engagement while overlooking environmental footprints, long‑term social equity, and systemic integration with sustainability policies. This Issue directly supplements that gap by introducing sustainability as a core design and evaluation criterion. It contributes quantifiable indicators (e.g., carbon per learner‑hour), practical tools for monitoring, and evidence‑based policy recommendations. Ultimately, the Issue transforms AI‑augmented learning from a technology‑centred discourse into a sustainability‑centred field of research and practice.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
