Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

To collect research work in this field and strengthen communication among scholars, I am pleased to announce a new Special Issue entitled " Energy Sustainability and Biofuels”. Authors are invited to contribute a research or review article to this Special Issue. This Special Issue will be launched by the open access journal Sustainability (IF: 3.889, ISSN: 2071-1050). Expertise and publication records in this field could mean your research is relevant to this issue.

For more information on this issue, please visit the Special Issue website.

This Special Issue focuses on the four categories of biofuel production. Biofuel generation processes, based on the feedstock used for their production, are a friendly alternative to fossil fuels, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The first category of production involves transforming biomass into fuels; biomass such as corn, wheat, and sugarcane can produce bioethanol and biodiesel. The second category utilizes cellulosic biomass, such as perennial grasses, to produce bioethanol and methanol. The third category of energy production involves crops and algae, and is a more sustainable option. Finally, the fourth category is biomass source and innovative production methodologies, such as biogas and other bioalcohols. Biofuels face challenges such as feedstock availability, environmental impact, and competition with food production.

The collective need for biogas, biomass, biodiesel, bioalcohols, and biohydrogen is the generation of biofuels. These fuels are an alternative that produces clean energy and reduces environmental impact. Biomass waste can produce energy through different processes.

Aims and Scope

This Special Issue welcomes the submission of high-quality papers in the field of bioenergy production, focused on using biomass for sustainable development. The Special Issue will publish papers in the area of biofuel production, including studies on biogas, biodiesel, bioalcohols, and biohydrogen. Papers highlighting novel applications of biofuel for sustainability are encouraged.

Contributions can include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  1. Bioengineering processing improvements, fermentation, and sugar hydrolysis;
  2. Circular management of agriculture and aquaculture waste;
  3. Biodiesel, biohydrogen, bioethanol production, processes, and innovations;
  4. Biorefinery development, multiple product production, minimal waste, and subproducts revaluation;
  5. Waste biomass management and composting;
  6. Biofuels technologies for cleaner production;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
