Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues, 

The ocean is increasingly affected by climate change, anthropogenic activities, and expanding marine development, highlighting the need for effective and sustainable approaches to observing, managing, and conserving marine environments. Underwater acoustics provides a powerful and non-invasive means of continuously monitoring the ocean over broad spatial and temporal scales, offering valuable information on marine organisms, biological resources, underwater soundscapes, environmental variability, and human activities. 

Recent advances in acoustic sensors, passive and active acoustic monitoring, signal processing, autonomous observation platforms, numerical modeling, and artificial intelligence are rapidly expanding the capabilities of underwater acoustic observation. These developments provide new opportunities not only for long-term monitoring of marine ecosystems but also for assessing anthropogenic underwater noise, evaluating the environmental impacts of offshore development, supporting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and detecting ecological responses to climate and environmental change. 

This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in underwater acoustic technologies and their applications to sustainable ocean monitoring, environmental assessment, and marine ecosystem management. We particularly welcome interdisciplinary studies integrating acoustic measurements with oceanographic observations, biological information, numerical modeling, environmental assessment, and emerging data-driven approaches. 

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Passive and active acoustic monitoring;
  • Ocean bioacoustics and biological sound monitoring;
  • Ocean soundscape and underwater noise assessment;
  • Ocean acoustic propagation and environmental variability;
  • Acoustic detection, classification, and localization;
  • AI and machine learning for underwater acoustic data;
  • Autonomous and unmanned acoustic observation systems;
  • Long-term monitoring of marine ecosystems and environmental change;
  • Acoustic monitoring for marine biodiversity conservation;
  • Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture applications;
  • Sustainable applications of underwater acoustics for ocean observation and management.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, and methodological studies that advance underwater acoustic technologies and demonstrate their potential to support sustainable observation, conservation, assessment, and management of the marine environment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
