Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
To transition toward a low-carbon and sustainable energy future, we need innovative methods for effectively storing, converting, and utilizing energy. This Special Issue focuses on modern research, emerging technologies, and strategies that foster sustainable energy systems and enable the seamless integration of renewable resources such as solar, wind, and biomass. The scope includes cutting-edge energy storage materials and technologies—such as redox materials, batteries, supercapacitors, and hydrogen systems—alongside advanced energy conversion techniques including fuel cells, thermoelectric systems, and electrochemistry. We also emphasize efficient utilization strategies aimed at minimizing waste and emissions.
We welcome studies on smart grid integration, lifespan assessments, and techno-economic analyses that promote environmentally friendly and scalable solutions. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a multidisciplinary platform for scientists, engineers, and policymakers to share innovative ideas, foster collaboration, and accelerate the development of next-generation energy technologies. By highlighting creative approaches and practical applications, we seek to inspire global initiatives toward achieving net-zero emissions, enhancing energy security, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Energy storage systems (e.g., thermochemical, electrochemical, mechanical);
- Batteries and advanced battery technologies;
- Supercapacitors and ultracapacitors;
- Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization;
- Fuel cells and electrochemical conversion;
- Energy conversion technologies and devices;
- Power-to-X technologies (e.g., power-to-gas, power-to-liquid);
- Integration of renewable energy sources;
- Smart grids, energy management, and demand response;
- Waste heat recovery and utilization;
- Energy harvesting and conversion from ambient sources;
- Advanced materials for energy storage and conversion;
- Catalytic processes for sustainable energy storage, conversion, and utilization;
- Renewably produced fuels and bioenergy;
- Life cycle assessment and environmental impact analysis;
- Techno-economic analysis and system optimization;

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
