Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Guest Editor is inviting submissions for a Special Issue of Sustainability on “Innovations in Sustainable Construction: Intelligent Facility Management and Energy-Efficient Building Systems”. The importance of sustainable construction and energy-efficient design is paramount, given that buildings account for approximately one-third of the global energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Intelligent building and facility management systems supported by IoT sensors, artificial intelligence, and digital twin technologies have the potential to significantly enhance energy efficiency, increase occupant comfort, and boost system reliability. Some studies suggest that IoT-enabled smart building systems could reduce energy use by up to 30% and lower operational costs by nearly 20%. Meeting the goals of near-zero energy and resilient buildings is essential for aligning with the Paris Agreement’s climate objectives and making progress toward the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
This Special Issue includes, but it not limited to, work on the following topics:
- Smart buildings and facility management;
- Energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems;
- Internet of Things (IoT) and AI in building operations;
- Renewable energy integration in buildings;
- Digital twins and Building Information Modeling (BIM);
- Life-cycle assessment and carbon footprint analysis for construction;
- Predictive maintenance and performance optimization;
- Sustainable retrofitting, renovation, and adaptive reuse;
- Resource-efficient and circular construction practices.
You may choose our Joint Special Issue in Energies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
