Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce a new Special Issue of the journal Sustainability entitled “Integrated Treatment Strategies for Solid Wastes”.
The generation of solid waste has become a critical global challenge due to rapid industrialization, urbanization, and population growth. Current waste management practices often rely on single-technology approaches, which are unable to address the complex composition and ever-increasing volume of solid wastes. Improper handling not only leads to severe environmental and health risks but also results in the loss of valuable resources. To move towards sustainable development, there is an urgent need for integrated treatment strategies that combine physical, chemical, and biological processes, while also considering resource recovery, energy generation, and pollution control.
The adoption of integrated solutions contributes to the circular economy by transforming waste into resources, extending the life cycle of materials, and minimizing environmental burdens. Innovative treatment approaches, including waste-to-energy technologies, bio-based solutions, and advanced recycling strategies, can significantly reduce our dependency on landfill while providing economic and environmental benefits. Life cycle assessment and techno-economic analyses are essential to validate the performance, feasibility, and sustainability of these solutions, ensuring their alignment with global goals for green development.
This Special Issue focuses on innovative and eco-efficient integrated treatment strategies for solid wastes, aiming to promote resource efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and support the transition towards circular and sustainable economies. This Special Issue aligns with the scope of Sustainability by addressing environmental challenges and fostering interdisciplinary approaches to waste minimization and resource recovery.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- Integrated physical, chemical, and biological treatment technologies for solid wastes;
- Waste-to-energy approaches and valorization of by-products;
- Recycling and resource recovery of plastics, metals, biomass, and construction wastes;
- Circular economy and eco-design strategies in waste management;
- Life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis of integrated treatment solutions;
- Policies, regulations, and socio-economic drivers for sustainable waste management;
- Smart and digital technologies for optimizing collection, monitoring, and treatment processes.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
