Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
With more frequent extreme climate conditions and increasing traffic loads, the existing infrastructure must be upgraded to improve resilience, lower carbon emissions, and reduce maintenance costs. To ensure a more sustainable transportation network, we must create road materials and structures that are long-lasting and have minimal environmental impact. However, the performance may not be compatible with reduced carbon emissions. Conventional methodologies and technologies may not be suitable to meet the requirements of high-performance and low-carbon transportation infrastructure. Therefore, on the one hand, novel techniques and optimization should be conducted through the application of low-carbon technologies across various stages of transportation infrastructure development. On the other hand, the circular economy principles should be incorporated into transportation infrastructure to help minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency. Hence, the Special Issue on Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality in the Transportation Section of the World Transport Convention (WTC) organized two parallel technical committees: 'durability and low-carbon technologies of transportation infrastructures' and 'calculation method of carbon emission during full life cycle' to encourage the submission of recent work that furthers our understanding of the durability and low-carbon technologies for transportation infrastructure. The papers submitted to these two TCs will be considered for publication under this Special Issue. This Special Issue also lays out an interdisciplinary framework that aims not only to advance specific areas of science and engineering but also to help advance the state of practice in transportation engineering. Review articles that describe the current state of the art are also encouraged.
