Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
It is time to rethink sustainable energy. Challenges are faced by many countries in the race to net-zero, and according to some estimates, the global energy transition will cost around USD 10 trillion per year until 2050. A major shift towards renewable energy sources is possible with the introduction of energy storage systems and the use of distributed intelligent control in the grid; to achieve this, the shape and nature of the electric grid may have to change. Active energy distribution energy networks will be needed to address the issues of variability and distributed energy resources, and the impacts of prosumer behavior will influence energy usage patterns. As energy is traded in energy markets, it is important to investigate whether current market structures are appropriate for achieving the net-zero goal. To this end, in this Special Issue, we welcome contributions from experts in diverse fields, such as energy sources, energy policy, energy economics, and grid architecture and control, to provide new insights that address this pressing challenge. We invite authors to submit original research articles, reviews, case studies, and perspectives towards rethinking sustainable energy systems and the governance of smart grids.
The Special Issue will focus on policy reviews and models of proposed systems that aim to achieve the goals of sustainable energy. We intend to present a multi-disciplinary view of the problem and a valuable collection of papers for beginners and experts working towards the achievement of net-zero goals.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
