Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The construction industry is currently facing a dual challenge: the need to enhance the performance and durability of building materials while significantly reducing their environmental footprint. To meet these demands, research is shifting towards innovative cementitious composites that leverage both cutting-edge nanotechnology and the principles of the circular economy.

The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a comprehensive platform for the latest advancements in "Advanced Concrete Materials for Sustainable Construction: From Nano-Modifications to Circular Economy Solutions." This theme aligns closely with the scope of Sustainability, as it addresses the urgent need for eco-friendly engineering solutions and the efficient management of resources in the built environment.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. We particularly encourage submissions that explore the synergistic effects of modern admixtures and nano-additives, such as carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nanosilica on the rheological, mechanical, and microstructural properties of cement systems. Furthermore, we aim to highlight the integration of diverse waste streams and the long-term reliability of these modern materials.

Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Nanomaterials in cementitious composites and their long-term performance;
  • Interaction between chemical admixtures (superplasticizers) and modern nano-additives;
  • Rheology and hydration kinetics of advanced cement pastes, mortars, and concretes;
  • Circular economy and waste valorization, including the recycling of plastics (PET), stone powders, and industrial by-products (e.g., fly ash, or slag);
  • Utilization of construction and demolition waste (CDW) and agricultural residues in building materials;
  • Alternative and low-carbon binders, such as geopolymers and alkali-activated materials;
  • Durability and aging: focusing on carbonation, corrosion, and mechanical properties after long-term environmental exposure;
  • Shrinkage-reducing strategies and cracking resistance in eco-friendly composites.

By bridging the gap between nano-scale engineering and macro-scale sustainability, this Special Issue seeks to contribute to the development of the next generation of green construction materials.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and hope this collection will serve as a valuable resource for the scientific community.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
