Dear Colleagues,
The rapid development and wide spread of cyber-physical systems bring a great deal of convenience for people to investigate the complicated physical world; meanwhile, more and more humans are involved in these systems. In order to distinguish them from traditional cyber-physical systems, these new systems that consider humans as a part of themselves are called cyber-physical-human (CPH) systems. Currently, CPH systems are the common foundation of many modern applications, such as autonomous driving, smart city, smart home, smart building, smart transportation, and smart manufacturing. Since CPH systems take a human-centric view instead of the device-driver design, there are many challenging problems that need to be solved in comparison to traditional CPS or IoT systems. For example, the involved human dramatically increases the uncertainty of the entire CPH system because their intent is difficult to forecast. Moreover, the problems of how to understand the scene and human activities, how to build software-defined active sensing and actuation mechanisms and API, and how to efficiently deploy and adapt system performance in heterogeneous cloud-edge-device environments, etc. are also quite challenging. A series of new models, algorithms, software, and simulations are needed to improve the design and implementation of CPH systems for different applications.
Based on the above motivation, this Special Issue welcomes the submission of research articles reporting original works on CPH systems from both academia and industry. We also welcome review articles that provide readers with current research trends in CPH systems, CPS, and IoT for smart cities.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Modeling and simulation for CPH systems or IoT systems;
- Human intention prediction and scene understanding;
- Network and system architectures and protocols for CPH systems;
- Human interaction for IoT and CPH systems;
- Edge computing and resource scheduling;
- Operating systems and runtime environments for CPH systems or IoT systems;
- AI algorithms for IoT systems and CPH systems;
- Software-defined active sensing mechanisms and API;
- Data management, privacy and safety for CPH systems or IoT systems;
- Smart cities, smart home, smart building, smart transportation and smart manufacturing modeling algorithms;
- Programming models and OS for CPH systems or IoT systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
