Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Industrial verticals are facing a new era as the Internet of Things (IoT) allows billions of smart and embedded devices to seamlessly connect, be managed and securely interact over the underlying network. As a matter of fact, IoT-based solutions for distributed monitoring produce a huge amount of data that need to be managed in large-scale and integrated infrastructures, featuring a continuous stream of information originating from embedded systems and smart IoT devices, going through digital platforms, and reaching final user applications. Aspects such as energy harvesting, longer battery life, more precise geolocalization, and more efficient and secure hardware solutions should be further investigated and explored in the IoT domain.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect scientific and technical contributions discussing industrial applications exploiting sensor-aid localization techniques. The vertical Industry 4.0 domains to be considered include (but are not limited to): smart cities, healthcare, multi-modal transportation and supply chain (including seaports and container terminals as nodes), manufacturing, and smart agriculture.

More precisely, we will publish original works which properly consider some of the following topics (not an exhaustive list):

  • IoT-oriented device/sensor network for monitoring purposes.
  • Cellular networks (e.g., LTE, 5G/mMTC), narrowband communications (LoRA, Sigfox, visible light communications, NB-IoT, etc.), new communication protocols and paradigms, network resources optimization, network function virtualization (NFV), software-defined networks (SDNs).
  • 5G networks permitting UE localization (i.e., from 3GPP R16 onward) and beyond.
  • Multi-access edge computing providing cloud computing capabilities at the edge of the cellular network allowing security-critical and time-sensitive data handling
  • Radar-based localization.
  • Platforms for data storage, access, and management (e.g., consider M2M platforms).
  • Integration between satellite and terrestrial localization information (e.g., considering enhanced PNT capabilities).
  • Distributed ledger technologies and data trustworthiness.
  • Data aggregation and data virtualization tools.
  • Fault-tolerance, security and privacy in networked sensor applications and systems.
  • Data management and analytics, including data quality and its integrity.
  • Back-end and front-end technologies for application implementation (e.g., relying on service-oriented architectures (SOAs).
  • New data models and semantics.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
