Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs), as integral parts of most Internet of Things (IoT) devices, are currently proliferating, providing a new paradigm of emerging technologies. Currently, many wireless sensor devices are being applied in reality to collect massive data. The question of how to handle the big data collected in an efficient, secure and economical way has become an important research challenge. 

Blockchain is considered a promising technique that can be used to build trust without the need for a trusted third party. The convergence of blockchain and WSNs can provide a secure and robust mechanism for the management of data generated by wireless sensor devices. Due to the transparency of blockchain, security and privacy in blockchain-based wireless sensor networks (BWSNs) are increasingly important subjects. However, traditional security procedures, such as encryption and protocol design, are becoming increasingly ineffective at ensuring reliability and safety in today’s wireless networks. In BWSNs, a great deal of effort has been put into ensuring privacy and security. In light of this, viable blockchain ideas for security and privacy in wireless sensor networks urgently need to be researched in both academia and industry.

This Special Issue focuses on discussions and insights into the state-of-the-art developments and technologies regarding security computing and privacy protection in support of blockchain-based WSN applications in all domains. Contributions regarding the theory, design, implementation, as well as applications of security and privacy in blockchain-based WSNs, are all welcomed. Manuscripts should contain both theoretical and practical/experimental results.

The topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Wireless sensor network (WSN) blockchains;
  • Privacy issues with solutions in BWSNs;
  • Efficient verifiable computing in BWSNs;
  • Secure distributed storage in BWSNs;
  • Lightweight encryption for sensors in BWSNs;
  • Business models with privacy concerns for BWSNs;
  • Game theory and its applications to BWSNs;
  • Secure authentication mechanisms for BWSNs;
  • Scalability and scalable services for BWSNs;
  • Privacy theory of distributed consensus;
  • Architectures and protocols of BWSNs.

The potential security problems of blockchain technology are constantly restricting the development process of related industrial applications. The cost of deploying a blockchain system in a real environment to conduct research on security issues is relatively high, and the related security analysis and verification are also destructive and irreproducible. Therefore, based on the idea of layered design, this paper proposes a blockchain system simulation platform. The blockchain system is divided into four layers in the simulation platform: the consensus layer, network layer, contract layer, and storage layer. In the consensus layer, the problem of computing resource waste is solved. In the network layer, a peer-to-peer network topology simulation is implemented. In the storage layer, the problem of redundant storage is solved. In the contract layer, the contract replay speed is accelerated. Finally, a prototype of an efficient blockchain simulation system is implemented based on the above methods. Full article
