Dear Colleagues,
The use of organic conducting polymers (CPs) in the development of electrochemical sensors and biosensors has been expanded tremendously in the last decade for the monitoring of key analytes in bio-medical, environmental, and food safety applications. CPs-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors have emerged as powerful analytical devices that can provide fast, reliable, sensitive, and versatile analytical measurements, including in vivo applications. Several CPs, such as polypyrrole (PPy), polyaniline (PANI), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), and their derivatives, have been intensively investigated in the electrode surfaces modification for sensing applications. The modulation of the electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of CPs layers by incorporation of metal nanoparticles, redox mediators, carbon materials, and biomolecules ensures the improvement of the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensors.
This Special Issue aims to provide an overview of the recent progress and developments in the area of electrochemical (bio)sensors based on electrodes modified with CPs and (bio)composite materials including novel preparation and electropolymerization procedures, advanced sensing materials, innovative surface functionalization and detection strategies, and selected applications in the chemical sensing of various species like neurotransmitters, antioxidants, and organic and inorganic pollutants. Reviews and original research papers dealing with CPs-based electrochemical sensors fabrication, characterization, and applications in sensing of key analytes in bio-medical, agri-food, and environmental samples are welcome.
